KARACHI, Oct 01: Nine persons were killed and at least ten injured when a group of unidentified armed men resorted to indiscriminate firing in an imambargah in Al-Falah area early this morning at Fajr prayers.

According to eyewitness reports, at least five armed men reached the Imambargah Hurr in Golden Town (Al-Falah, Malir) during Fajr prayers. Two of them walked in and sprayed the congregation of faithful with bursts from their automatic weapons. An eyewitness told police that the gunmen continued firing for at least three minutes and then escaped through the by-lanes of the area on foot.

Several persons sustained bullet injuries while eight of them died on the spot. On of the injured died later in the hospital. The place of the incident presented a gory sight where with several people was lying in pools of blood.

Edhi ambulances shifted most of the bodies and the injured persons to the Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Center (JPMC) Hospital, while some of the injured were shifted to PNS Rahat in Karsaz. An emergency was declared at the JPMC where the bodies and majority of the injured were shifted. The condition of another two of the injured persons is said to be critical, hospital sources said. An uneasy calm was prevailing in Al-Falah area where contingents of police and law enforcement agencies were deployed to thwart a possible "reaction". The city areas, reckoned to be vulnerable in view of sectarian bias, have also been taken over by the police as precautionary measure.

Allama Hasan Turabi, President, TJP Sindh, told The STAR these killings were not due to Shia-Sunni conflict but "some forces were trying to create a misunderstanding and fan hatred between the two sects." He suspected the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) may be involved in the gory incident.

The Namaz-i-Janaza of the deceased will be offered at Hussaini Imambargah, Sadat Colony after Juma prayers.

ATC orders release of accused

KARACHI, March 26, 2001: The Administrative Judge of Anti-Terrorism Courts for Karachi Division, Justice Shabbir Ahmad ordered the release of an accused involved in Masjid-e-Hur massacre case after police submitted a report under Section 497 CrPC on Monday.

Al-Falah Police arrested accused Muhammed Saeed on March 2. Acting Administrative Judge Arshad Noor Khan remanded him to police custody on March 3 up to March 8. The remand was extended up to March 15 and then up to March 20 when the interim challan of the accused was submitted under Section 302, 324 Qisas and Diyat, 7 and 8 ATA and Section 34 PPC and the accused was remanded to judicial custody.

Police later sought three adjournments for submitting final challan, while in the meantime police allegedly recovered a Kalashnikov on the disclosure of the accused, claimed to be the weapon used in the incident on October 11, 1999 and another case of Section 13-E was lodged against the accused.

The police, however, submitted a report under Section 497 CrPC along with an opinion of a PDSP on Monday. The PDSP opined that the case against the accused rested on the statements of three witnesses Pir Bazullah, Zia and Shafqat. The former two had left the country and the third witness Shafqat was not coming forth to identify the accused, therefore, it would be futile to challan the accused.

The bench perusing the report and opinion of the PDSP approved the application ordering that the accused might be set free if not required in any other case.

According to prosecution, some unidentified gunmen opened fire at people offering Fajr prayers in Masjid-e-Hur (Imambargah) and killed Syed Ejaz Hussain, Jamshed Abbas, Syed Hasnain Naqvi, Nazeer Ahmed, Amjad Ali, Muhammed Nawaz, Syed Imtiaz Hussain, Syed Safdar Abbas Naqvi, Zulfiqar Naqvi and Shabbir Ahmed, while Ghulam Hasnain, Tasawwur Hussain, Syed Waris Ali, Altaf Hussain and Matloob Hussain sustained injuries.

The interim challan showed Dilawar alias Dildar alias Tufail, Yusuf, Ata-ur-Rahman alias Naeem alias Bukhari, Muhammed Umar and Hussain as absconders.
