Police nab three involved in killings of Shias

BHAKKAR July 9: The Bhakkar police on Wednesday claimed to have
resolved the mysteryshrouding the killing of nine persons at
Khairpur Tamewali and the murder of DC Khanewal Capt Raza Ali,
by smashing a gang involved in sectarian terrorism. S P
Bhakkar Tariq Masud Yaseen told a press conference that one of
the three persons arrested in connection with the murder of
Tehrik-e-Jaferia district chief Syed Ejaz Hussain Shah, at
Darya Khan a couple of days back, had confessed to his
involvement in the Khairpur Tamewali killings and the murder
of DC Khanewal Capt Raza Ali.
According to the SP, the main accused in the Darya Khan incident,
Hafiz Shafiqur Rahman, also had a major role in the firing
incident at the Iranian Cultural centre in Multan in which
several persons, including director of the centre were killed.
The SP also claimed that accused Shafiqur Rahman, during interrogation,
had provided a clue about the real assassins of SSP Gujranwala,
Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf Marth whose identity was however being
kept secret.
The SP told newsmen that the second accused, Asif Mahmud hailed
from Okara and was allegedly involved in the killing of Dr Ijaz Imam.
The third accused Tanveer Ahmed belonged to Darya Khan, and had
allegedly been harbouring the terrorists besides dealing in illegal
arms trade. To a question, the SP said all the accused had
made voluntary statements during investigations conducted on
scientific lines, and the accused had not been tortured at all.
He said the Honda motorcycle used in the Darya Khan incident had
been recovered from the accused. He said the accused had been
sent to jail on judicial remand. He told newsmen that the IG Police,
Punjab had promoted to the next ranks all the police officials
concerned for showing bravery and excellent performance in this case.
