You finally reach the foot of the mountain around sunset. It's still chilly, but compared to the mountain top, you're happy with the warmth. You hum a little tune to yourself, and realize that you're actually quite content. After all, you went up the mountain, survived an avalance, and...ah, made the aquantence of some interesting creatures and people. This is a story no one will believe when you get home. Suddenly you feel a strange tingling sensation; when it passes, you find you're not on the mountain, but instead on the edge of a wide grassland, trees faintly visiable in the distance. It seems to be the dead of a balmy summer night, and the harvest moon hangs full and orange low on the horizon. The wind seems to carry a sad voice singing wordlessly of loss. Confused-it was only sunset seconds ago!- you turn around. Behind you, you can see the mountain, the path, even your own footsteps....but it too is shrouded in darkness. Deciding that you must have been mistaken on the time, you shrug and walk onto the plains, finding the path to have faded into nothing before long. Dismayed, you realize it would be very easy to get lost, so you head toward the distant trees. Around the center of the field and a dried-up old pond, you hear a voice. Inching closer, you see a girl in a simple brown dress a few shades lighter then her hair and eyes standing near a fearsome-looking purple and golden dragonling.

"She's beautiful, Deidre! She's all shining and silver, just like the stream in the forest! And she's got a spiked crest, just like mine, but hers has feathers too, and her wings have white feathers too! They look so soft. Are all other dragons like her? Are they all so strong and graceful? Do you think that she likes me? That she might want to come back and play again? Maybe she'd like the plains! Maybe she would fly with me! Do you think she's flown to many places?" The small dragon paces excitedly, wings rising and falling in his agitation, as the girl simpley sits and watches him, a book unheeded in her lap. She makes no move to answer any of his
many questions, and it's just as well since the adolencent dragon is not giving her nearly enough time to fit a word in edgewise. Carefully, you lower yourself into the draught-struck watering hole, and the girl looks up at you. The dragon doesn't even notice. This, more then anything, tells you of his preoccupation. Eclipses have very strong and fierce protective
instincts, and you wouldn't normally get this close to one unchallenged.
The girl smiles at you with relief.
"Ah, my friend, perhaps we'll have peace at last! Our young Daithi has been driving me to distraction with his pacing and endless opinions of the mysterious female he spotted in the Boundless Grey Sky."
You smile back at the girl--Deidre was her name, wasn't it?--although hesitantly. A momments thought later, you click in that she's speaking of the space between worlds. You glance at the teen, wondering how long he's been able to fly to that inhospitable place.
"And she was so graceful!" he exclaims, apparently now telling you all about his new playmate's many virtues as well. You smile politely, but you needn't have bothered. He's already pacing the bowl again. Deidre smiles tiredly and leans closer to you so she can whisper unnoticed. "He's infatuated. Completely and totally mad for the young female. I've heard of nothing but her great becauty and grace and strength for days. I wish she'd go back in the Grey Sky again, so they could just talk. Then he'd either be overjoyed and with a life-mate, or he'd be depressed and then back to normal. Personally, I'm hoping she's as intrigued as he. Otherwise, I'll have a mooncalf dragon, and would that not be terrible?" Deidre grins at you, and you can't help but laugh a little too. "Would you like something to drink? Daithi's probabley going to be out here for awhile. He keeps checking the scrying pool for signs of his mystery beloved. Personally, I'm just sending messengers all over the worlds--and especially to Spectral Rhea-- for word of dragons matching her description. I feel like I've seen her myself, I've been told so much. But that's all on the sly. I don't want to get his hopes up for nothing. But I think I've found her. Her name is Schemering, and she's a litttle older then he. I've sent word to her companion, and we're to play match maker. If the attraction's mutual, we may have a pairing here. And Daithi'd be so very happy!" Deidre gives you such a joyful smile, you can't imagine her as the same sober and wary girl you met who was spying on a Dragon Hatchery and telling sad tales to travellers. You smile back, and follow her to the small home she shares with her Eclipse friend.
