This interview with New Mexican Disaster Squad was done via e-mail with Alex on September 7, 2003. It was really super-quick and basic and will be replaced with a more in-depth, in-person interview as soon as I do one.

If you don’t know, NMDS are one of the best bands to call the fine state of Florida home. They are out of Orlando and play a brand of hard, fast and political 80's style East Coast Hardcore. They just came out with a new album on Philadelphia’s A F Records. They’ve been touring like crazy and are planning to tour all over Europe this November - December with stops in the UK, German, France, Austria and Italy. Their road mates for the jaunt will be Richmond’s Strike Anywhere. They’ll be back just in time for the Daytona Hardcore Fest on December 28th through 30th. Anyway, this interview is pretty fucking weak, it was done long distance, its my fault, I'll work on something a little better soon, for now...

The band is Alex on bass, Richard on drums, Brian on guitar, with Sam playing the other guitar and screaming.

SHZ-How is the tour going?
NMDS: The tour went decently, some good shows, some bad... we still had a shitload of fun no matter how good or bad the show was though.

SHZ-Whats the initial response to your new record?
NMDS: Everyone I've talked to who's heard the new record seems pretty stoked... We havent really seen a whole lot of reviews at this point, but they should be coming in any time now... We're really fucking excited about it though.

SHZ-What is your message and how do you define the band?
NMDS: We have a really broad range of messages. We hit on a lot of social issues, and i think one of the most important ones is honesty. As in thinking for yourself, and being the person that you want to be regardless of how cool it is. Not just going along with trends and fads to fit in. Don’t ride the crest... We dont really try to define the band. we're just in it to have a good time, and hopefully we'll write some decent songs and make some people think along the way.

SHZ-What are your plans for the rest of the year?
NMDS: We have a couple weeks of tour in October with Ann Beretta and CruiserWeight in the Southeast. Part of that tour including a slot at Shocktoberfest a huge festival in Pensacola featuring The Reverand Horton Heat, Yellowcard and the Lawerance Arms. Then we head back and play "The Fest" in Gainesville October 17th and 18th. After that we're heading over to Europe on tour with our good friends Strike Anywhere for a month from November 19th-December 19th. We're really excited because it's our first trip out of the US as a band.

SHZ-What was the deal with the long delay on the release of the new album?
NMDS: The delay wasnt really that long. We just had to fuck around with the artwork a little bit and we sorta ran over schedule. No biggie.
SHZ-How long exactly was the delay and how maddening was it waiting for it to come out?
NMDS:It was two weeks, and it was only slightly frustrating. We figured, we might as well get it done right if we're gonna do it, and just pushed it back a little bit. We're really happy with the layout so it was well worth it.

SHZ-Where did the name of the band come from and what is its meaning?
NMDS:The name is in reference to a group of freedom fighters that fought against the corrupt railroad barrons in the early 1800s. In escaping the corrupted townships they constructed the worlds first skateboard and used it to cruise away down the tracks and into safety.
