Mother Teresa...a saint to the poorest of the poor....
There will never be another one like her...at least not for the next fifty years.
My first encounter of this frailed yet strong lady was in the book 'City of Joy'. The author had mentioned her in the book. (Incidentally, the same author had caused her anger only recently over the contents of a film that is to be based on her life etc). Anyway, my interest was subsequently fueled by a friend's enthusiam to help out at mother's house. Where better place than to go to Calcutta itself to experience what she *Mother* has gone through?
Hence began the most fruitful , eye-opening journey of my life to date...
Mother was in Singapore when my friend , May Lee and myself went over to India. It was 23rd December 1995. We met Mother on the 25th Dec. when we woke up at 5 am to attend the Christmas Mass at the A.J.C. Bose Road, or 'Mother's house'. May Lee was a non-christian and myself, a Christian. Mother was a catholic. Thus, three person of different religious background met for Mass. Mother spoke for a while after the usual mass...After that, she stands at the doorway as about 200 of us walked through the door. She held each hand as if her own and bless us as we kneel. She also pressed a necklace of the picture of Christ in our hands. That simple gesture of touching her was worth the visit itself , to Calcutta. A gruesome 3 weeks when I went through food poisoning, sub-zero coldness and cold showers etc etc.
To be continued...
