Analog / Playground proved to be a good part of Zero-In Constructs -- a much awaited art intsitutional event. Accompanying catalogues were produced for both Retroactive and Analog / Playground : Extensions to the Graphic group exhibitions. Being born and spending most of his life in an urban landscape like Mandaluyong City has immersed him in the urbanization of a then quiet province and the struggle of its populace to these citifications. The proliferation of the shopping malls and the 'consequent development' on its people and add a bit of politics has intrigued and captured the imagination of this printmaker. Roldan's body of works represents an inward look at how one could be an idealist in an ever besieged population. He mainly explores around mediums like acrylics, oil, drawings, prints, photographs and installations. He also continues to write poetry and articles about the arts. He invites young artists from abroad to come to the Philippines to have artists talks or organized collaborations with local artists to encourage exchanges that would help fellow young artists in the Philippines parallel themselves with their counterparts abroad. Some of the recurring themes in his past works revolve around politics, religion and the plight of individuals - regression, denial, faith/faithlessness, courage and wit. A self-trained artist, he constantly practices his hand on different disciplines that hone his skills. He has worked in documentation, photography, coordinating and organization of exhibitions for institutions such as the Vargas Museum and Hiraya Gallery, as a facilitator in symposia and as an instructor for the past five years in different art programs. Being also part of a curious lot of young artists has even given him a chance to collaborate on ARS (Surrounded By Water Ortigas Chapter -- artist-run-space) exhibitions and group related projects. The group has since altered its original concepts, allowing more to transform and move on in their individual techniques, ideologies and beliefs. " I work largely on cultural issues in my paintings, installations, photographs and mass prints. I gain insight to create from popular convictions, way-of-life and in most Filipino practices." back to mainpage enter next page enter |
