…and found part 2
"One of us should call home and update Auntie V." Mary says.
"Why don't you, David--nice to be the bearer of good news for a change."
"Ok," he smiles and goes to call her when she answers he tells her the latest. V in turn let's the kids waiting at home know. David soon returns. "She is very happy."
"I figured she would be," Joannie says. "When does the invasion start?"
"In the morning." He sits down.
Joannie looks at her watch. "Yawn. It is morning."
"Do you want a ride home?"
"Maybe we should stay?"
"Ok, I'm going to go check on her," Mary says.
"We'll wait for you
here."
Mary nods and goes to check on Nancy.
"You don't have to stay here, David, you know. She's OK. You can go home and get some sleep."
"There's still about 4 hours left in that 12 hours of them having to keep a close eye on her." He says not wanting to leave just yet.
"Will you at least lie down?" Joannie says, pointing to the couch. "You've been here for hours."
"All right all
right." He pretends like she's twisting his arm but the truth was he is
tired. He soon falls asleep on the couch.
Joannie covers him with her jacket.
A few minutes later: "Anyone hungry?" Tom asks in the waiting room as he holds up the food.
"Thanks, Dad," Joannie says, grabbing the bag.
"No problem, any word?"
"Mary went to sit with her. And David's fast asleep. Oh, and he called Auntie V and told her the latest."
"Good, why don't you
go home."
"I want to
stay."
"OK." he says
sitting next to her.
Abby walks in.
Tom takes one look at her
and feels something isn't right but he doesn't want to be the overbearing
husband. "Mary is with Nancy." he says.
"Good." Abby sits down. "Do you want to go, too?"
"Sure."
"I'm just going to sit here for a while, if that's OK."
"Are you sure you are OK?"
"Yeah, sure. I'm
fine." ~Or will be as soon as the pills hit.~
"Ok." he says. "Joannie will you walk with me?"
"But," Joannie looks at the bag of food in her hand, then at her father. "Sure, Dad." She hands Abby the bag. "I'll be back."
When Tom and Joannie are out of Abby's sight. Tom turns to Joannie. "I may be getting paranoid but keep an eye on Abby, ok?"
"Just in general, or anything specific I should be looking for?"
Tom shrugs. "It's
just a feeling I get." Tom says. "Never mind, its probably
nothing."
"No, Dad, you're worried. Tell me what to look for and I will."
"If I knew....." Tom says. "If she just doesn't seem right."
"You know me, Dad, I always keep my eyes open."
"That's what I am counting on, thank you."
"My pleasure." They stop outside Nancy's door. "I'm going to head back to the waiting room."
Tom nods and walks in Nancy's room.
Meanwhile Tommy and Elizabeth arrive in the waiting room. "Hi." Tommy
yawns.
"Hi," Abby says. "Do your parents know you're out at this time of morning?"
"They do now, how's my roommate?" Elizabeth asks.
"Much better. Mary,
Joannie, and your dad went to se her. You can go next."
"OK." she says sitting down next to her.
"See I told you she was OK." Tommy says as he collapses next to
David.
"Shh. Don't wake
him," Abby warns.
Tommy rolls his eyes ~Why
not? Elizabeth woke me.~
Abby yawns and rests her head on Elizabeth's shoulder. "How are you doing?" she whispers to Elizabeth.
"I'm ok, you?"
"Better now."
"Yeah, its good Nancy'll be OK."
"That, too."
"Something else wrong?"
"No, not anymore."
"Anymore?"
"Well, your father
agreed to get you a tutor," Abby tap-dances.
"That's good." Liz says.
Joannie comes back into
the waiting room, plotting how to find out what's up with Abby.
"Hi Joannie." Elizabeth whispers not wanting to get scolded by Abby
either.
"Hi." Joannie rummages in the food bag. "Anyone want any
breakfast?"
"I do." Tommy says.
Joannie hands him some of the food.
"Thanks."
"Liz?"
"No, I'm not hungry." she says eyeing Joannie aboit Abby's strange behavior.
"Well, I could use a soda. Anyone want to walk me?" Joannie asks, eyeing Liz in return.
"Sure." Elizabeth says. "Abby, can I have my shoulder back?"
"Hmm? Oh, sure," Abby says, and rests her head on the back of the seat instead.
"I'll give it back to you when I get back." Elizabeth teases. "Would you like anything?"
"A bed?"
"I don't think they have that in the vending machines."
"Maybe we should think about adding them. We'd probably make a fortune."
"Hmmm...good idea." Liz says and walks off with Joannie. "Did you want to talk at me?" Elizabeth asks Joannie.
"Looked like you wanted to talk to me--about Abby, maybe?"
Elizabeth shrugs. "If I didn't know better......" she begins to say.
"What?"
"It's foolish to even say but....Just for a second there Abby acted like one of our friends at our infamous parties???"
"Naaaah. You really think so?"
Elizabeth shrugs. "I told you it was crazy."
"Maybe. Do me a favor? Keep an eye on Abby. Maybe it was a fluke, the way she acted, but maybe not."
Elizabeth nods. "I feel ashamed that it even came into my head."
"Don't. Dad's worried, too."
"Dad?"
Joannie nods. "He asked me to keep an eye open, too."
"Then there is something up."
"I know. I just don't know what."
Nancy is just waking up, "hi Dad."
"Hi Honey, how are you feeling?"
"Not too good, are
you ok?"
"Do you need anything for the pain?" Tom asks avoiding her question.
"They just gave me something." She says. "What's wrong?"
"Well besides you getting hurt?" Tom says. "Nothing."
"Don't worry Dad, I'm going to be ok."
"I know, thank goodness," he says as he sits with her and takes her hand.
"How serious was it?"
"Very Serious."
"I'm sorry." She says.
"It's not your fault."
"I love you." She drifts off to sleep again.
Tom covers her up and Mary who is sleeping in a chair by the window.
Four hours later, Dr. Max comes to the waiting room to talk to whoever is still
awake at the moment. "She's out of the woods now, but we still have to
keep her a week and still a week of bed rest when she gets home."
"Is she awake?" Joannie asks.
"Yes, and she can talk a little more, but how long she'll stay awake I don't know."
"Fair enough. Who's coming with me?"
"I am." Mary
says.
"I'll be there in a little bit," Abby says.
"Ok," She says and then she and Joannie go to see her.
"Have you come to bust me out?" Nancy greets them.
"Shoot, we forgot the cake with the file," Joannie jokes.
"We'll bring it next
time." Mary also jokes.
"Thanks I knew I could count on you two." She then gets serious.
"I'm sorry if I scared you again."
"If you didn't scare us, life would get boring."
"That's for
sure." Mary says. "So are you hungry?"
"Not really."
"Good, because the hospital food is truly scary."
"That's for sure."
"As soon as Dr. Max says it's all right I'll sneak you a
cheeseburger."
"Thanks Joannie."
"Hey, what are big sisters for?"
"Lots of things."
"Am I old enough to hear this?" Joannie asks Mary.
"I don't know are you?" Mary counters.
"Maybe if you don't listen in...."
"Ha ha." Mary counters.
"Oh, well, I tried," Joannie says to Nancy.
"Yep and that's the important thing." Nancy says.
"I'm glad you realize that," Joannie says in her best fake-stern voice.
Nancy laughs but soon
starts to weaken and tire again. She tries to hide it so she doesn't worry her
sisters.
Joannie yawns. "Hey, Nance, you mind if we just sit here kinda quiet? I'm zonked."
"I don't mind." She says. "I even have a free bed if you want to lie down."
"Nah, they might want to keep me. I'll just stay here."
Nancy soon drifts off to
sleep again.
"I'm going to head home to check on Nicholas and so Auntie V and Susan can
come here." Mary says.
"I'm going to stay here," Joannie says, determined to keep an eye on Abby.
"Ok, but get some sleep all right."
"You, too."
"I will." Mary then leaves and soon V and Susan arrive.
Meanwhile, Abby heads to the water cooler and, after taking a quick look around
to make sure no Bradford is looking, takes another few pills.
David wakes up seconds after she takes them. "Good morning." He says.
Abby quickly swallows and then takes a few casual sips of water. "Good morning. Did you sleep well?"
"Yeah, how's Nancy?"
"Much better." Abby checks her watch. "She's out of danger
now."
He sighs in relief and then gets a closer look at Abby. "Are you all
right?"
"Yeah, it's just been a long night. Give me a few minutes and I'll be fine."
"Have you gotten any sleep?"
"Have you gotten any sleep?"
"Ok, do you want any coffee?"
"Yes, please."
He gets them each some coffee.
By the time he gets back, Abby's fallen asleep.
David covers her with a blanket.
V finds Abby still
sleeping in the waiting room with David still trying to wake up. She finds a
pillow and puts it under her head and then whispers to David. "Where are
they keeping your sister?"
He smiles, "follow me." He leads her and Susan to Nancy's room.
Joannie is asleep in her
chair.
V covers her with a blanket and puts a pillow under her head and kisses her she then kisses Nancy. "I always knew that heart of yours was indestructible." She whispers so she doesn't wake either of her Nieces.
Nancy awakens an hour or
so later. "Hey," she says to Susan and Vivian.
"Hey yourself, do you need anything?" V asks.
"A soda."
"I'll be right back." V says and goes to get it.
"How are you feeling?" Susan asks
"Better than I was, at least now I'm coherent. And you?"
"I'm fine." Susan says
"Good."
"Did the Dr's tell you how long you'd have to stay in the hospital?"
"Yeah for a whole week."
"Yeah for a whole week."
"True."
"Is there any thing you need or that I can get for you?"
"No I'm ok." V soon returns with the drink.
A little while later
Elizabeth and Tommy come to see her. Nancy motions for them to whisper so they don't
wake Joannie and wonders where Abby has been this whole time.
"How are you." Tommy whispers
"A little better." She whispers back. "How are you two?"
"Better than
you." Liz says.
"Gee thanks." Nancy quips.
Elizabeth kisses her forehead. "I'm kidding."
"I know."
Tommy plays with the remote of her TV.
"I swear you are as bad as Nicholas." she whispers to him.
"Tommy you're going to wake Joannie."
Later, Susan and V have left and Joannie is still asleep in the chair. ~I
wonder if Abby's ok, it's not like her not to have been by at all since last
night. Maybe she's sleeping like Joannie. Or maybe she's mad at me for some
reason. No it can't be that, can it?~ Nancy
continues to worry and considers getting out of bed and checking the waiting
room. She quietly and carefully gets out of bed and puts on the robe that her
Aunt had brought. And starts walking out of the room. She grits her teeth to
keep from screaming from the pain that her broken ribs
are causing.
Joannie wakes up. "NANCY! Are you crazy? Get back in bed!"
"Something's wrong with Abby I know it is." She says.
"She probably fell asleep. You and I did."
Nancy hesitates but finally gets back in bed.
"As soon as someone else gets here I'll go check on her for you, OK?"
"Thanks Joannie, and I'm sorry I act without thinking it through a lot."
"That's OK. We love you anyway."
Nancy smiles. "I love you too."
"Then no more nonsense. Got it?"
"Got it."
"Good."
In the waiting room, Abby finally wakes up and looks around to see if Tom is back.
Tom walks from around the corner and drops in one of the sofas. 'What time is it?"
Abby yawns and looks at her watch. "A little after noon. Have you gotten any sleep?"
"No." he says. "You?"
"Well, if you call sleeping on these couches sleep."
"Why don't you go on home."
"Only if you will. You need to get some sleep."
Tom sighs. "Do you think she'll be Ok for a few hours?"
"Max said she's out of danger now. All she needs to do is rest and recuperate. And there'll be plenty of people here. They'll call us if we're needed."
"I'm too tired to fight you."
"In that case, I'll
drive."
"Good idea."
"Any time you're ready."
"I'm too tired to move." he says.
Abby puts an arm around him. "Come on, I'll help you."
"We better tell someone that we are going."
Abby looks around.
"V's over there. I'll go tell her."
She grabs her purse and starts heading towards V, surreptitiously mouthing a
couple of pills and swallowing them dry.
"Ok." Tom says closing his eyes.
Abby tells V they're going and then returns to Tom. "OK, sleepyhead, your bed is getting lonely."
"Lead the way."
Abby helps him out to the car and into the passenger seat.
"I'm getting too old for this." Tom states.
"I thought that's why you married me--to have someone to keep you young enough for all this."
"That...among other things." he smiles through his yawns.
Abby gives him a quick kiss. "Try to stay awake until we get home. I can't carry you up the stairs."
Tom turns on the radio to keep him awake.
Abby drives home, trying to be very careful while slightly speeding.
Tom notices the speedometer. ~Since when does she speed?~ "Are you OK?"
"I'm fine," Abby insists, slowing down. "I just want to get you home."
David walks into Nancy's room.
"Hi, David."
"Hi, are you two
hungry?" He asks.
"A little." Nancy admits.
"Me, too," Joannie says.
He brings out Pizza from behind his back.
"I knew there was a reason I love the big lug."
"Thanks David."
Nancy says. He gets her a slice and she tries to eat it. At that point V comes
in and tells them that Tom and Abby went home to get some sleep. ~Why didn't
they stop by and tell me themselves?~ Nancy wonders and loses any little
appetite she had. "They must be
pretty tired." She says and picks at her pizza.
"Well, they've been here since yesterday," Joannie says, "and I don't think Dad's gotten any sleep."
"Poor Dad and Abby." She says. "Sorry David I'm not very hungry. I think it's the broken ribs."
"It's ok."
"Maybe you all should go home and get some sleep too, you look tired." Nancy says.
"Maybe you're right," Joannie says, already thinking of trailing Abby.
"Thanks for staying with me Joannie."
"We'll see if you still say that when you're better and sick of me."
"I don't get sick of you." She says.
"You will, but that's OK." Joannie stands. "I'd better get home."
"I'll drive
you." V says, she hugs Nancy. "Call me if you need anything."
"I will." She hugs her back. David also hugs her and leaves.
"Are you ready Joannie?" V asks.
"Yeah," Joannie says reluctantly. "I'll be back soon," she promises Nancy.
"I'm not going anywhere." Nancy smiles at her.
"You'd better not be."
"I'm not I promise." She tells her trying to hold back her tears till they leave so she can cry in private.
Joannie, David, and V go back to the house. Once they leave Nancy cries herself to sleep.
Back at the house:
David decides to leave and go back to his own house. Mary is just waking up.
She showers, gets dressed, and goes downstairs to eat something.
"You going back to the hospital?" V asks.
"I'll go tomorrow." Mary says. "I need to get some studying
done. Or maybe I'll go the next day I don't know. I'm tired of hospitals.
Besides it's not like she's in danger anymore life goes on."
"And how quickly it does." V comments.
"Things move fast in this family if you blink you'll miss them. I'll see
you later Auntie V." Mary says and leaves for the library.
The phone rings. V talks to the caller for a while and then hangs up. ~A heart
attack, my Horst?~ She goes and tells the family that she has to go and after
saying their goodbyes she heads back home to Horst.
Meanwhile at David's house he helps the landlord repair the railing and then
head over to see the girl he had cheated with and they wind up breaking up both
realizing the consequences aren't worth their actions.
Several hours later at the hospital.
"You have to eat something." The nurse says to Nancy.
"Why?" Nancy asks flatly and turns up the volume on the tv.
The nurse turns it down. "To keep up your strength."
"I'm not hungry." Nancy insists.
"If you don't eat we'll have to put in an IV."
"Fine." She finally eats something just to get the nurse off her back.
Upstairs, Abby wakes up and wishes she hadn't. After trying unsuccessfully to
go back to sleep she debates taking some more pills. ~I shouldn't. They can't
be good for me, taking them like this.~ In the end, though, she gets out of bed
and heads off towards the bathroom.
David comes back and knocks on their bedroom door.
~Argh.~ "Come in."
He walks in. "Hi Abby, I was wondering...." He stops in midsentence.
"Are you ok?"
"Sure, I'm fine. I must look a mess, though. Just woke up. What were you
wondering?"
"Just how everyone around here is doing."
"Aside from lost sleep, fine, as long as Nancy behaves and gets
better."
"I think she was upset that you guys sent V to say goodbye, but she tried
to hide it."
"Oh. I'm sorry she was upset. If I didn't get your father home then,
though..."
"She'll get over it." He says. "It's time she realized that
things move quickly in this family. She's going to be fine now this family has
other things to worry about."
"Such as?"
"Elizabeth's tutoring for one."
"I've applied for a tutor for her. It's an unusual situation, but I'm pretty sure the district will be sending one."
"That's good, and you? How are you?" He says.
"I wish people would stop asking me that. I'm fine, OK? Fine."
Tom lies there with the covers over his head ~So much for sleeping.~
"Getting old huh?" He says understanding. "Want to sock the next
person who asks you."
"I'm considering it."
"Fair enough." He says. "Well I'd better get going I wanted to
get a little work in today."
"I have a few calls to make, too, and then I'm going to head over to the
hospital."
He nods and then leaves.
Abby takes a few of her pills and then goes to see if Mary is in her room.
Mary is back from studying. "Good morning." She says.
"Oh, hi," Abby says, startled to find Mary there. "I..I was just checking to see where everyone was."
"I got tired of the library." Mary says studying.
"Oh. I'm going back to the hospital later, if you want a lift."
"Thanks but I'm going to stay home I'll go by there tomorrow or the next day."
"Is something wrong?"
"No, just need a break from the hospital."
"Funny thing for a medical student to say."
"I know."
Abby sits on the bed. "Come on, Mary. If something is wrong, you can tell me."
"Nothing's wrong it's just boring visiting people in the hospital."
"That doesn't sound
like you, Mary."
She shrugs.
"Mary..."
"I can't do it anymore Abby, it was too close this time. Each time something happens to her I always wonder is this it? Will this be the time she never comes home?"
"Maybe. But what are you going to do, stop caring while she's still right here?"
"You're right and I'll go with you." She sighs. "You know I never did tell her that I'm glad she still is here."
"I'm not sure I did, either, but I am sure she knows it."
"Yeah but in one of
the courses I'm studying it covers things like this and sometimes it does the
patient some good to hear it."
"Then just give me a few minutes to get ready and we'll go tell her."
"Ok." Mary says and also gets ready.
Abby makes her calls, setting up a meeting, canceling another, and then waits for Mary downstairs.
Meanwhile, Dr. Max comes
in to check on Nancy. "Funny, you don't look like someone who
cheated death and won." He jokes.
"Big deal people do that every day it doesn't matter." She says
flatly.
"Sure it does, your family was pretty worried last night. I'm sure they're
glad you're still there." He says.
"Oh really I wouldn't know, not one of them has said that to me." Her
eyes well with tears. "Dr. Max why don't you just go all right I want to
be alone, I don't want to see anyone right now!!" She starts crying.
"Just get out and let me be."
"Keep an eye on her." He whispers to the nurse and leaves the room.
He considers calling Tom and Abby but doesn't want to wake them.
She turns on the tv and
it winds up on a movie about a guy who wound up almost dying. His family is
there telling him how much they love him and are glad he didn't die. She turns
the tv off and closes her eyes.
"Yeah only in the movies." She stares at the ceiling awhile but
becomes bored with it. She considers checking herself out of there and catching
the next bus out of town but decides against it, she promised Joannie she
wouldn't do anything like that. She just lies there and continues to cry until
she's fallen asleep again.
When she awakens the
nurse helps her to bathroom and after she's done back into bed.
"You've been asleep awhile you must be pretty hungry."
"No." Nancy says quietly. "Have my parents called."
"No not yet but I'm sure they will or come by soon."
"Yeah probably still sleeping or have other things to tend to. We're a
pretty large family. My getting hurt is old news by now." She says a
little bitterly.
"Somehow I doubt that, we all tend to blow things out of proportion when
something hurts us emotionally."
Nancy tunes her out and turns on the tv again.
After awhile the nurse leaves the room and runs into Dr. Max. "She's
barely eaten at all today and she claims she's still not hungry."
"A Bradford not eating?" Dr. Max asks.
She nods. "I know you'd thought we'd never see the day, but..."
"I'll talk to her. No, I'll talk to her family," Max says and dials the Bradford house.
Mary answers the phone. "Hello."
"Hi, Mary," Dr. Max says. "Is your Dad around?"
"No he went to the store, but Abby's here, she and I are on the way to the hospital."
"Just what the doctor ordered. Nancy is very lonely, I think."
"We'll be right there." She tells him and hangs up the phone. "We're needed." She says to Abby.
"What's wrong?"
"That was Dr. Max, he says she's lonely." Mary tells her not knowing about the not eating part yet.
"Well, then let's go give her some company."
"Let's." They leave for the hospital. A little while later in her
hospital room. ~Uh oh.~ Mary thinks when she sees how sad her sister looks. She
hugs her gently. "You know it's good to still have you have here."
She tells her. "I love you honey."
"I love you too." Nancy says and hugs her back cheering up some.
"Hey, can I get in on this hug fest?" Abby asks.
Nancy smiles,
"yes."
Mary backs away to let Abby in.
"I love you,
Nancy," Abby says and hugs her. "I'm glad you're going to be all
right." There's a noise. "Is that your stomach?"
"I love you too Abby." She says hugging her back. "And yes I think it is."
"Hospital food is really awful, isn't it? Want us to get you something
else?"
"Yes it is and yes."
"What would you like?" Mary asks.
She tells them.
"I'll go get it," Abby volunteers.
"Are you sure I can go." Mary says thinking that Abby doesn't look well right now but doesn't say anything so she doesn't get Nancy worried.
"I said I'll do it," Abby repeats a little sharply.
"Ok," Mary
says. Once Abby has left to get the food.
"What's wrong with Abby?" Nancy asks having noticed something was off
before her sharp response to Mary.
"I don't know I can't put my finger on it."
"Mary how long does it really take women to recover after a
miscarriage?"
"It depends on the woman. Some a few days, others a week or more, but Abby
said she's fine. So don't start worrying."
While Abby is across the street waiting for their food, she checks her watch. ~Too soon. But one more can't hurt, can it? Or two? It might help...~
"She'd tell us if
she was in pain wouldn't she?" Nancy continues to worry.
"Of course she would." ~I hope.~
Soon Abby comes back with the food. "Room Service!"
Nancy smiles, "Cool, thanks Abby." ~Should I ask her if she's fine or has she had enough of people asking that?~
Abby hands around the food.
Nancy eats slowly so she doesn't aggravate her ribs. When she's done. "That really hit the spot."
Abby pushes away the food she's been picking at. "Anything else I can get you?"
Nancy looks closer at her
and something clicks. ~Oh no.~ She had seen people she used to party with pop
pills like they were going out of style. ~No I'm mistaken it can't be that.~
She decides to ease into asking about it.
"Abby, have you been in pain today?"
"I'm more concerned about whether you're in pain, Nancy."
"It's starting to lessen."
"Good."
"Are you still hurting?" Mary asks Abby.
"I wish people would stop asking that. I'm fine, OK? What more do you want? A doctor's note?"
Mary sighs and smiles.
"I'm sorry, it's just that we worry about you too just like you worry
about us."
Nancy nods in agreement.
"I appreciate it,
but there's nothing to worry about. I've got it all under control."
Nancy sighs in relief.
Meanwhile Tom sits in the parking lot of the supermarket and sees a bar. ~What's one drink?~ he thinks and drives over there, "Scotch on the rocks." he tells the bartender.
A woman sits down next to him when his drink is delivered. "Lose your best friend?"
"Huh?" he asks deep in thought. "I guess you could say I lost something."
"I know the feeling.
Wanna talk about it?"
"My wife lost our baby." He emphasizes the word wife.
"That's real tough. She in the hospital?"
Tom nods. "She's visiting my daughter who was injured in a accident yesterday."
"And you're over
here drinking?"
"I needed a little courage." he says holding the glass,
A drunk man listens to Tom and the ladies conversation and fumes inside. ~I'd give anything to have my family, my wife and kids alive again.~ "You're an old fool!" He slurs to Tom.
"What?" Tom says. ~Great, so much for a quiet drink.~
"Go to the hospital be with your wife and daughter." He lectures in his drunken stupor.
"You are drunk."
"Maybe but I know what I'm talking about." He says sadly.
"He's also right," the woman says. "I used to be married to a guy just like you. What a lousy jerk he was."
"Just because I am in pain? I am a jerk?"
"They're in pain, too. Your wife lost her baby and you don't see her in here looking for some courage, do you? So yeah, I guess you are a jerk, too."
"Hey Lady, back off." The bartender says.
"OK, OK. He's not worth yelling at any way," the lady says, getting up. "Just another lousy husband and father."
Tom sighs. "Another
one please." he tells the bartender.
"Are you sure?" he asks.
Tom nods. "Thanks." he says and drinks it down.
The lady sighs and goes to the other end of the bar.
"Why should she back off? She's making sense." The drunk says.
"I lost my first wife too." Tom says.
"Will you hear what I have to say." The drunk says to Tom. "About why I'm here."
Tom sighs. "Sure why not."
He tells Tom a long story about his family and losing them in a car accident. "When I woke up from the accident they told me about my family."
Tom shakes his head. "That's rough, I'm sorry."
"That's mostly why I came on so strong with lecturing you. Sir you still have your family. I'm sorry about your first wife and your baby."
Tom nods. "thanks."
He nods also.
Tom buys the man a drink before he pays the tab and drives to the hospital.
