Lost…Part 4

Part 3

Tom enters the room quietly.

Abby is just coming out of the shower.

"Oh, you are awake."

"Yeah. There was an elephant lumbering around this room earlier. Where'd you go?"

"I took your advice, I had a sit down with Channing."

"And? You worked things out?"

"I called a truce."

Abby kisses him. "Thank you. See? It wasn't that hard, was it?"

~If you only knew.~ "No." he lies.

"What time is our flight?"

"Noon."

"Then I'd better start packing."

"Why don't we eat first."

"I'm not really hungry, but you go ahead."

"When was the last time you ate?"

"What are you doing, watching my meals? I ate when I was hungry and I'll eat again when I'm hungry."

Tom rolls his eyes. ~Hormones~ "I just asked, you don't have to bite my head off."

"You don't have to treat me like a four year old. How many times do I have to tell you--I don't like being patronized."

"Fine, forget it." He says. "I was just trying to do something nice."

"If you want to do something nice, how about treating me like your wife and not your daughter?"

~Last time I try to bring breakfast in bed, heck she wouldn't even appreciate the rose I got her.~ he throws the bag in the trash and starts packing.

A couple of hours later: "Maybe we can fix their favorite dinner." Nancy suggests to Joannie.

"You think they're going to be in the mood to eat?" Joannie says gloomily.

She thinks it over. "Probably not, but I have to do something."

"What's there to do? Nothing's going to change what happened."

"I know that but maybe we can make things easier on them." Nancy shakes her head as soon as the words out. "That probably won't help either."

"What won't?"

"Trying to make things easier. Maybe there isn't a way to after something like this."

"I don't know. I'm just going to stay out of Abby's way--that should help a little."

~Man I wish they got along.~ "If you say so." She says with a little doubt in her tone.

"It'll give Abby one less thing to worry about. I feel sorry for her."

"Things like this shouldn't be allowed to happen." Nancy states.

"It's not like we get a say. I just wonder what caused it?"

"Yeah well we should get a say. None of asked to be put on this Earth and while we're here we don't even get a vote." Nancy protests. "It could've been anything."

"If we had a say, Nancy, a lot of things would be different, and we Dad and Abby wouldn't be together, much less have lost a baby."

"And Grandma Bradford would still be alive making her rum cakes every Christmas." Nancy says.

"The world would sure be an overcrowded place if we had our say."

"It sure would be but still."

"Yeah, still."

They stay there like that pondering life while V goes to pick up Tom and Abby at the airport.

Tom and Abby walk down the ramp.

Not seeing them yet V waits for them at the gate.

"There's V." Tom says.

Abby takes a deep breath. "Yes, it is."

"I hope they didn't tell Nicholas." Tom says as they walk towards her.

"She wouldn't have. Would she?"

Tom shrugs.

"Hi V."

V approaches them and hugs them. "Hi you two."

"Thanks for coming to get us," Abby says.

"Thanks for coming." Tom says.

"I wouldn't be anywhere else right now."

"I'll go get the luggage." Tom states.

"Ok."

Tom walks to the baggage claim area.

Abby starts fiddling with her purse to keep from having to make conversation.

V takes the hint and stand there in silence with Abby.

"Have you told the kids?" Abby finally asks.

"Yes, but not Nicholas yet, I figured you two would want to tell him."

"Yeah, he'll be the tough one. I think he was looking forward to not being the baby of the family anymore."

"Yeah." V agrees.

"How'd the rest of them take it?"

"I can't tell with Tommy, Elizabeth, Joannie, and David. Mary is being the strong one. Susan cried but she seems to be doing ok. Nancy cried but I think she's trying to get herself strong for when you get home."

Abby nods. ~In other words, I'm going to have to be strong for them. Story of my life.~

"You don't have to be strong for them, let me do that." V says not having heard her thoughts but having read her face.

"It's nice of you to offer, V, but I'm the one they're going to take their cues from."

"You have me if you need to break down."

"Thanks. I think Tom will need you more."

"I can be there for both of you."

"I'm glad we have you."

"You'll always have me. No matter what."

Abby hugs her and waits for Tom to return.

V hugs her and waits for Tom to return.

Tom returns with the luggage. "Are you ready to go?"

"As ready as I'll ever be," Abby says.

Tom gives her a quick kiss. "It'll be Ok."

"Tommy your nose looks worse."

Tom looks at Abby. "Do we tell her?"

"It's your nose."

"I guess you wouldn't believe I ran into the door or Abby did this to me, so I'll tell you the truth. Channing."

"Channing? Why would he do that?"

Tom shrugs. "You'll have to ask him."

"I don't want to ask him, I want to ask you silly." V teases.

"I guess he figured I don't take care of my wife or kids well enough."

"Oh my."

Sometime later they pull into the Bradford house driveway. Meanwhile inside.

"They're home." David says from looking out the window.

"How do we act?" Elizabeth asks.

Nancy looks to her big brother for the answer.

"I think you two already know the answer to that." He says.

"Just be ourselves." Nancy says. ~Only stronger.~

He nods.

"Ok."

They wait for V and their parents to walk in.

"You ready?" Tom asks Abby.

"No, but I can't stay in the car, can I?"

Tom opens the door for her.

V starts helping with the luggage.

"Thanks. Would it be really awful if I went straight upstairs?" Abby asks. "I'm kind of tired, I guess."

"No, of course not."

"We'll have to talk to Nicholas, though."

"When you are ready."

"He'll figure something is up once he sees how the kids are treating us. Bring him upstairs and we'll talk."

"Ok." Tom says.

They go into the house with V close behind with some of the luggage.

Abby hesitates at the doorway to the living room, looking at the gathered kids.

David goes and gets the rest of the luggage.

Nancy looks at him oddly wondering why he didn't greet their parents yet and approaches Tom and Abby and hugs them.

Abby stiffens in Nancy's embrace and doesn't return the hug.

Nancy doesn't know how to react to this so she just shrugs it off and tries to say something but can't find the words.

"I'm going to head upstairs," Abby announces.

Mary approaches Abby. Nancy back away from the crowd of greeters and retreats to the kitchen.

"Abby if you need anything."

"Thanks. I'm just tired from the flight is all."

"Understandable, and no problem." Mary says.

Abby heads up the stairs.

Meanwhile outside:

"Where are you going?" David asks Nancy as he's getting the luggage situated.

"I have some studying to do I'll be back later." She says as she heads for her car.

"Ok." He says and goes inside.

"What did you say to Abby to get her to run away like that?" Joannie asks Mary.

"Joannie not now." Mary says and leaves the room.

Nancy returns having forgotten her purse and grabs it from the table near the stairs.

"I just love the way this family hangs together in a crisis," Joannie mutters and leaves the room.

~Great, I'm out of here before someone else gets mad at me.~ Nancy leaves the house and gets in her car and drives so the car squeals out of the neighborhood.

"Where's Nicholas?" Tom asks.

"He's upstairs in his room," Mary says from the next room.

"Will someone get him for me and bring him to our room please?"

"Sure." Mary goes upstairs.

Tom puts the luggage on the bed. "Mary is getting Nicholas."

"Thanks."

There's a knock on the door.

"Come in." Tom says.

Nicholas enters,

"Hey Champ. I was wondering where you were hiding." Tom says.

"I didn't hear the car, how come are you home so early?"

"Why don't you come sit down next to me?" Abby suggests.

Nicholas does this. "Is there something wrong? You look sad."

"That's because I am. See, I got sick while I was away and..." She looks over to Tom for help.

"Well Nicholas it's like this...." he starts to say.

"You aren't going to die are you?" Nicholas asks. before Tom can finish.

"Oh, no, Nicholas," Abby says, opening her arms so he can snuggle in for a hug if he wants. "I'm fine now. But--well, there isn't going to be a baby is all."

Nicholas goes in her arms. "But why?"

"Sometimes these things just happen. No one really knows why."

"Oh....I'm sorry."

Abby shrugs. "At least I have all of you."

"Yeah." he says sadly.

Abby hugs him a little tighter.

"I'm glad you are home."

"Why? Is something wrong?" Abby frets.

"No, I just missed you, that's all."

"Oh. Well, I missed you, too. In fact, if you open up my suitcase, I have a few things for you in there."

"Really? What?"

"Go look."

Nicholas runs over to the suitcase. "Wow, this is all for me?"

Abby nods. "You find the footballs, too? I got them all signed for you."

"Cool, Thanks Abby." he beams.

"You're welcome."

"Why don't you show Tommy the footballs." Tom says.

"OK. Bye." he says as he carries the loot.

"So?" Abby says after the door is closed. "Did that go OK?"

Tom nods. "Very well, you OK?"

"Sure. I'm fine. A little tired."

"Then let's rest."

"Tom? I don't want you to be upset, but...I need a little time by myself."

"Oh..............Ok." he says. "I'll be downstairs when you need me."

"Thanks."

Tom gives her a quick kiss and retreats to his study unnoticed. He slumps in his chair and cries.

Abby huddles under the covers and cries.

Several hours later Nancy returns and puts a carton of Abby's favorite ice cream in the freezer hoping she doesn't run into Joannie, but her hopes are dashed when Joannie walks in. "Don't judge me." Nancy says to her and gets something to drink.

"Why would I do that?"

"Because I left the house and you didn't seem too happy about it earlier."

"I wasn't angry at you. It was Mary who said whatever she did and then ran off."

"Oh," She says. "I'm an idiot."

"Yeah, but we love you anyway."

"Thank you I needed to hear that, I love you too."

"Cue the sappy music," Joannie says. "What's with you today, anyway?"

She shrugs, "Nothing, ok it's not nothing. Abby needs us right now, and what do I do I freeze up."

"Hey, don't beat yourself up about it. None of us know just what to do right now."

"Yeah but I hate not knowing what to do."

"We all do, Nance. I mean, even Dad's looking a little lost."

"You know his nose looked worse than when he left."

"His whole face does. He didn't have black eyes when he left home."

"I wonder what happened. You don't think Channing....."

"Why would he? Maybe it was Abby."

"Abby wouldn't do that."

"It could have been an accident."

"Could've been."

"We'll never know unless we ask."

"Is Dad awake?"

"I guess so. We could check."

"Ok," she says a little hesitant.

"Look, if you don't want to know..."

"I do, but what if he's not in the talking mood."

"Then we won't be any worse off than now, will we?"

"I suppose." They go looking for Tom.

Tom is in the study staring out the window.

"Hi Dad." Nancy says as they enter.

"Oh Hi Nancy, Joannie."

"Dad what happened to you?"

"You were there, I got mugged." Tom sidesteps the question.

"Yeah but it seems worse."

"Well sometimes it takes a few days..."

"Yeah."

"How are you feeling?"

"I'm all right, now."

"Good..." he replies, his thoughts a million miles away.

Nancy hugs him.

"There wouldn't happen to be any ice cream left?"

Nancy makes a mental note not to hug anyone for awhile and before leaving the room. "Yes there is but don't touch the..." She names Abby's fave ice cream and then goes upstairs to her room.

Tom is taken aback. "What'd I do?" he asks Joannie

"Couldn't have been anything too bad. She went upstairs, not outside. So--what really happened?"

"I told you."

"Dad, I'm the actor in the family--not you."

Tom tells her what happened. "Now don't go tell anybody."

"Too many bad things have happened the last couple of days."

"I'm surprised at you, Dad."

"What? Why?"

"If someone had beaten up Tommy or Nicholas, would you say 'enough bad thing have happened, just forget about it'?"

"No, but its different Joannie."

"Why? Because he's a grown man, so he gets away with it? He hurt you, Dad, just when you least needed it."

"I had more important things to worry about."

"And now?"

"I didn't want to make things worse for Abby, then they already are."

Joannie shakes her head.

"It's been a long day, I'm going to bed."

"I really think you should keep your options open, Dad."

"Why'd you say that?"

"Because. Like you said, it's been a long day. Tomorrow or the day after you might decide to clean this guy's clock."

"Joannie my love, if it was up to me I would."

"Maybe in a few days Abby will agree with you--just give her some time."

~Somehow, I doubt that~ "Maybe."

"OK. Well, then, good night, Dad."

"Goodnight Joannie."

"Hi. Nancy." Elizabeth says when she walks in the room.

"Hi Liz." She says and starts getting ready for bed.

"Hey, You OK?"

"Yeah sure I'm ok, are you ok?"

"I'm ok." she sighs.

"Good," she pretends to fall asleep.

Elizabeth does the same.

Nancy awakens before everyone else, showers, gets dressed and then leaves the house. She goes to a diner to eat breakfast and ponder everything. A little while later she leaves and goes to school. A few classes later in the cafeteria.

"We missed you a breakfast this morning." Mary says and sits down.

Nancy shrugs and pretends she's studying.

"Are you all right?"

"Perfect," she lies. "If you're going to worry about someone worry about Dad and Abby."

"Nancy don't lie to me."

"Mary get off my back." She leaves the cafeteria and the school and drives somewhere else.

Mary shakes her head and goes to class.

Later that night after everyone has supposedly gone to bed she returns home and goes to the kitchen to see if there's any dinner left

"Where have you been?" Elizabeth asks.

"I had some studying to do."

"There's dinner in the oven."

"Thank you, how are Dad and Abby?"

"Tell you the truth? I've been avoiding them."

"Why?"

"They have enough on their plate without my problems, besides I don't feel like hearing a lecture on skipping school or forging notes."

"I hear ya." She says still feeling useless and unneeded by her parents.

"You've been spending a lot of time at the library." Elizabeth says.

"Well if I can't be any good around here I might as well get something done, right?"

"What are you talking about?"

"I offer comfort and they don't want it or they ignore it. I don't have all the magical words that are going to make them feel better so what else am I to do? It's a hopeless situation."

"Nancy, we all feel that way, don't make it a personal issue."

"Nice confiding in you it's been real. I'll be at David's." She grabs her car keys and leaves.

"Oh man.." Liz frets. "Mary!!!" she calls for.

Mary comes into the kitchen. "What?"

"Nancy ran off again." She says and then tells her of their conversation.

"Going to David's isn't running off." Mary tries to calm her. "She just needs time to cool down."

"I didn't mean to hurt her feelings."

"I know." A little while later she calls David and talks to him awhile and then hangs up. "She's staying the night there."

V walks in. "Who's staying the night where?" Mary tells her. ~Damn it I should've been here I promised Abby.~ She considers going over there but changes her mind and decides to wait til morning.

"Who is where?" Tom asks.

"Nancy's spending the night at David's." V says glossing over why.

"Huh? Why?"

"She just needs some time with her big brother." Mary lies.

"Why do I get the feeling more is going on than you are telling me?"

Mary sighs. "She thinks you and Abby don't need her right now."

"Tom I'm sorry I should have been here to take care of this." V says.

"Wonderful." he says. "But she's got to realize, its nothing she did or can do."

"Tom can I talk to you privately please." V says.

"My study's open."

She takes a deep breath and begins hoping she's not overstepping her bounds. "Tom remember when were kids and mom would cry at night sometimes over Dad leaving and anytime we tried to comfort her she would shoo us away telling us it was not our worry? That it was for her to
deal with and she expected us to be unaffected by it? But we were affected remember?"

Tom nods. "I remember."

"I think that's what the kids might be going through right now."

"What am I suppose to do V?" Tom says. "I'm trying the best I can."

"I don't know, I want to say talk to them, let them comfort you if they need to but I may be asking too much of you too soon."

Tom sighs. "I'll go over there."

Tom walks out of the study as Elizabeth is going upstairs. "Elizabeth, tell Abby I went To David's."

"Me?" she asks.

"Yes, you. Is that a problem?"

"No...." she sighs.

"When I get back, I want to talk to you also." Tom says.

Elizabeth nods and walks upstairs and knocks on the door.

"Come in," Abby says.

"Hi, Dad wanted me to tell you he went to David's" she says and then turns to leave.

"Wait. Come in. Talk to me."

"Are you sure? It is late."

"Sure I'm sure. Come in."

Elizabeth shuts the door and sits on the edge of the bed.

"I won't bite," Abby says, "and what's wrong with me isn't contagious."

"I know, but I have a confession to make and after you just might bite."

"If I promise I won't bite, will you tell me?"

"I kind of went wacko, I forged your name."

"How big was the check?"

Elizabeth chuckles. "It wasn't a check, a note stating I'd be out of school."

"Mental health day?" Abby asks, though she knows what it really was.

"More like Mental Attack day." She says as she explains why she did it. "I'm sorry."

"Don't be. It couldn't have been easy; I'd probably have done the same thing. But you can't go on forging notes until graduation."

"Are you sure?" she jokes.

"Even your school would catch on sooner or later."

"I suppose." she says.

"So we're going to have to come up with another plan."

"Boarding school in Switzerland?"

"No, we'd miss you too much."

"Do you have any idea how I felt when I saw that guy near his locker, joking and laughing?"

"Enough to leave home for years?"

"No."

"Then there's got to be another solution."

"Taking out a contract?" she jokes.

"Sorry, I gave up my ties with the mob when I married your dad."

"Aunt V suggested a Tutor."

"Have you spoken to your father about that?"

"No, I was hoping you could talk to him."

"How long were you hoping to have tutoring for?"

"I don't know."

"Well, we'd better come up with a good solid proposal to present your father. I know a few good tutors ..."

"Really?"

"It's worth talking about, for a while at least."

"Thanks Abby and I am sorry for causing so much trouble especially now."

"You're not causing trouble, and if by 'now' you mean what happened in New York, well..."

"I am sorry it happened, it would have been cool to have a baby around here again."

"It would have been. But I suppose eight kids are really enough for one family."

"Who says?"

"Come on. I know what you kids all think--that your dad's--and probably my--sanity is shaky enough as is."

Liz shrugs "After what happened to me, I don't think there is any sanity left anywhere,"

"Oh, come on now, you can't claim blame for everything--I'll bet your Dad's been the way he is for years now."

Elizabeth laughs "I guess you are right."

"It's good to see you laughing."

"I do feel better, knowing I have you guys on my side."

Abby hugs her. "We always will be. Now you think about how long you'd like to be tutored and tomorrow we'll talk to your father, OK?"

"OK, goodnight."

Tom drives over to David's.

Meanwhile at David's.

"You can go to bed you know." Nancy says. "I know you have to get up in the morning."

"I'm not tired." David says hoping he can get her to talk.

Tom knocks on the door.

David gets up and lets him in, "Hi Dad, how are you?"

"Hi David, Seems to be the hangout for runaway daughters. Is she here?"

He points him in the right direction and shuts the door after Tom walks in. He then goes to his bedroom to give them some privacy.

"Hi, " Nancy says quietly.

"Hi." he says as he sits down. "It seems I haven't been a very good father lately, I am sorry."

"It's me who hasn't been a very good daughter." She says. "I'm the one that's sorry."

"Oh Nancy, you have nothing to be sorry for."

"Something is definitely wrong with a person when her own parents don't even want comfort from her." She starts crying. "You two are going through so much and there's nothing I can do to help."

Tom holds her. "Of course there is something you can do."

She rests her head on his shoulder. "What?"

"Come home."

"How will that help?"

"It's hard to explain, but just knowing that you are there does help."

"Does Abby feel that way?"

"Of course she does."

"Ok, I'm come home."

"Good, why don't you come in my car, we can pick up yours tomorrow."

"Thanks." They say goodbye to David and then leave with Nancy still a little hesitant about Abby, hoping her father talks to her.

Tom opens the door for Nancy.

"Thanks Dad." She says and enters the house.

Nancy stands outside her father and Abby's door almost knocking a couple of times but stopping still unsure.

Elizabeth comes out of the door, "You are back, I am sorry Nancy."

"It's ok kid, it's not like I haven't heard it before." She's still looking at her parents door wondering if it's too soon to go in.

"Go on in, she won't bite."

"But what if I say or do something stupid."

"It'll be fine, trust me."

She takes a deep breath and knocks on the door.

"Come in," Abby says.

Nancy walks in, "hi."

"Hi, there."

"Do you need anything?"

Abby takes a look at Nancy's hopeful expression. "Company would be nice."

"I can provide that for you." She say and has a seat on the bed.

"How are you feeling?"

"The truth?"

"And nothing but."

"Sad, a little helpless, how are you feeling?"

"Nancy, they'll catch the guys, I'm sure of it."

"I know, it's not them I'm worried about, they're just punks."

"Oh? Then---because of Elizabeth?"

"Partly, I'm worried about you and Dad too."

"Don't be. They say that when a woman loses a pregnancy this early on, it's really for the best."

~And they're allowed to get away with saying that?~ "If you need a shoulder to cry on, I have two of them."

"Thanks, I'll remember that. But I'm fine, really."

"Anytime," ~Do I believe her? It'll be all right she'll talk to Dad or Auntie V.~ She hopes. "Hey there's some ice cream in the freezer for you if you get hungry."

"Not vanilla, is it?"

"Nope," she tells her what flavor it is.

"Wow. Where did that come from?" Abby smiles.

Nancy smiles, "I bought it for you."

"Thank you. Just don't let your father see it. He's been eating way too much stuff that isn't good for him as is."

"You're welcome and he won't get to it." She tries to keep herself from yawning but can't. "I'd better get to bed, goodnight Abby."

"Good night, Nancy. And thanks for coming to talk to me."

"Anytime." She smiles and goes to her own room to sleep.

After Nancy leaves. Tom walks in the bedroom. "What a day."

"Come here, I'll rub your back," Abby offers.

"I'd like that." he says

Tom sits down and Abby starts to rub his back. "So what happened downstairs?"

"Huh? Nothing that I know of, why?"

"The way you walked in and said 'what a day'," Abby reminds him.

"Well let's see, I have one daughter who ran off to David's and another one who is afraid to go to school, other than that; a normal day at the Bradfords." he says.

"One of the girls ran off?" Abby asks, not having discussed that with Nancy. "And as for Elizabeth, maybe we should consider a tutor for a while."

"Nancy earlier." he states. "A tutor? Do you think that's wise?"

"Oh. Well, at least she came right home. And I don't see we have much choice, at least until we can figure something else out. We can't ask her to face that boy every day, can we?"

Tom shakes his head no. "I can't believe I am asking this, but do you think your father might have an idea of what we can do?"

"If he doesn't, he'll know who will. We have to call my parents anyway, tell them what happened."

"Yeah." He says. "Do you want me to do it for you?"

"Would you?"

Tom nods.

"In the morning, though. It can wait."

"You sure?"

"Elizabeth's not going anywhere and what happened in New York already happened. Waiting a few hours won't change anything."

Tom lays on the bed and closes his eyes. "How I wish we were on that cruise ship again."

"Oh, for the days when we were young and carefree," Abby says in a very dramatic voice.

"You making fun of me?"

Abby lays down next to him. "No, never. Just--we can't go back. The only thing we can do is forget and move on."

"I'll never forget."

"that's not what I meant. Just--you can't keep remembering is all. What's past is past."

"I guess you are right."

"I usually am," Abby says.

Tom takes her hand. "In the morning, I need to talk to you about something."

~Oh, no, not another problem.~ "In the morning."

"Goodnight."

"I love you."

Tom squeezes her hand. "I do you too."

In Nancy and Elizabeth's room: "Hey Nancy, you asleep?"

Her only answer is Nancy snoring.

Elizabeth rolls over and tries to sleep but soon she is.
