| Born into a musical family, Dabney NiCole Ross grew up with the sounds of jazz in one ear and classical in the other. Music was a constant fixture in the Ross household. Dabney's father is a trombonist, trained at Grambling State University, known for their illustrious marching band. With seven singing aunts and a grandmother with a high soprano voice and a natural talent at the piano, Miss Ross had music flowing through her blood. While attending Paseo Del Rey Elementary School, Miss Ross had the opportunity of singing in children's choruses. The highlight of this experience was singing at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion with students from Los Angeles School District wide school Choruses. Miss Ross was also very active in the United Methodist Children's Choirs. Often representing Faith United Methodist Church in combined Methodist youth choirs in concerts held in venues such as the Wiltern Theatre In Los Angeles and Wilshire United Methodist Church. Though Dabney loved to sing mostly popular music, Opera did not become an option until her College years. The irony of Dabney's operatic beginnings was that she only took a music class in order to gain credits for her degree in Art history. While taking, a beginning Voice class she had the tremendous opportunity of working with Ms. Joyce Sweeny. She was crucial in Dabney's decision to seriously take on the challenge of Opera. Ms.Sweeny stated that Dabney's voice has a bell like quality and showed promise if developed carefully. It was inevitable that she follow her gift for Operatic heights. Often Dabney performed in recitals and soloed in the 1995 West Los Angeles College Graduation Ceremonies. From West Los Angeles College Dabney attended Mount St. Mary's College. There she worked with Karl Snider and sang with The Mount Singer's and Mount chorus. At the same time, Dabney performed with Santa Monica College Opera Theatre in their production of Madama Butterfly. In 1998, Dabney studied with the Natalie Limonick, world renown Voice Teacher and Vocal Coach. During this time Ms. Ross had the opportunity to perform an original composition with Mr. Charles Veal, Conductor and violinist. She also worked with Ms. Sue Fink conductor of The Angle City Chorale. Both experiences led to performing in the Music Center at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Currently, Dabney is training with Mike Stevens, at the Colburn School of Music. |
