Postcard
plea for cats' lives

• September 19, 2003
TWENTY thousand postcards are being distributed in restaurants, bookstores
and libraries by the Cat Welfare Society in its latest campaign to save stray
cats here by sterilising, instead of exterminating them.
With a dead cat on one side and a healthy cat on the other — the postcard
explains that when you kill one, another will take its place, said society
spokesperson Dawn Kua.
Cats are very territorial, she explained. Removing cats from one area just
encourages new, fertile ones to move in and reproduce again.
The Government's programme to neuter cats and return them to the places they
were found at was suspended in the drive to spruce up public areas.
The society hopes that the Government will allow animal welfare groups to
continue their sterilisation programmes, rather than using taxpayers' money
to destroy them. — NewsRadio 93.8
