Feeding stray cats helps to breed rats

Animal lovers unwittingly contributing to rat problem

Thursday, March 25, 2004

I refer to the recent move to exterminate rats in Singapore.

I have noticed that many animal lovers leave food in the open to feed cats out of pity.

They probably believe they are helping the cats survive but do not realise that they may be contributing to the rat problem.

Firstly, if cats are rats' natural hunters, how well could a cat hunt on a full stomach?

Secondly, the food left for them is never finished and much is left to rot and stink in the open.

Wouldn't rats then follow the stench to a hearty meal late at night?

Thirdly, it is quite repulsive to walk past a fly-infested open pack of food left for cats. It makes one's stomach turn.

I believe cats are more resilient than we give them credit for and they will survive without the generosity of these animal lovers.

Such kind thoughts only serve to add to the rat problem. It would be good if some form of education campaign is held to stop such acts of "kindness".

This would be of help in our drive to reduce the rat population to some extent.
