Strays can be dealt with Humanely
I refer to Mr Wayne
Tan's letter, "Get rid of these strays" (Streats, June 25), regarding stray
cats in Punggol.
I would like to
suggest using animal repellent in the case of those concerned about strays
damaging their property in the common corridors.
To-date, there is
also no scientific proof that strays are unhygienic or pose any significant
threat to human health, since other humans are the most likely source of any
infectious diseases that are contracted.
Both of my cats were
adopted from the streets and I have never had any trouble with them.
Indeed, the environmental threat from humans is a more significant problem
since many Singaporeans still DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE FUNCTION OF THE LITTER
BIN.
Instead of
eradication, I strongly urge the relevant authorities to work with animal
welfare organisations such as the Cat Welfare Society to implement an island
wide Trap/Neuter/Release programme to reduce the numbers of strays.
