Research Interests in the Swartz Lab:

My research interests are in the aerodynamic capabilities of aerial locomotion of the Chiroptereans or Bats. Chiroptera are known to use unsteady flow techniques to prevent laminar flow separation during low and high angles of attack during flapping flight. They are also known to be able to have tremendous control over the shape of the wing because of their wing morphology. This implicates ability to change camber during their wing beat cycle. I am interested in using electromyography techniques to investigate muscle activation as well as using kinematic analysis of high-speed photography to analyze functional morphology and flight performance.

Current Projects:

·       Chiroptera “Bats”

o       Electromyography of flight surface intrinsic muscles

o       Three Dimensional Kinematic Analysis of Chiroptera Flight

·       Petaurista “Flying Squirrels”

o       Electromyography of flight muscles

o       Three Dimensional Kinematic Analysis of Petaurista to determine maneuverability and flight performance during gliding
