SINAGUA

Like Flagstaff High, Sinagua welcomes back a ton of players from last year's team and will have eight seniors on the 2009 roster. "You can definitely tell the practices are going smoother this year with so many seniors on the roster," SHS coach Rich Contreras said. "I think these guys are intent on trying to make a statement this year and have some success. " Contreras will look to senior infielder/pitcher Tyson Callan to be the team's go-to guy this year. Callan was the team's No. 2 pitcher last year and started at second base and was named first team All-GCR. "With Tyson, he just has a great blend of confidence and ability," Contreras said. "He has that attitude that he can hit anybody and that makes a huge difference." Also back for SHS are a trio of juniors, Kevin Wirth, Daniel Talbot and Brandon Leffler, that saw a lot of playing time last year as sophomores. Wirth and Talbot both started in the outfield last year, while Leffler was the team's starting catcher. This year, Wirth will resume his duties in the outfield and will also be one of the starting pitchers with Callan. Contreras expects junior Robbie Ingram and senior Cody Wallace to also get some starts on the mound. Contreras also said that the team will look to seniors Trent Gonzalez and Kyle Grace to provide some punch to the lineup. The Mustangs open their season on Thursday at El Mirage Dysart.
