Info
Sina Farrugia was born and educated in Malta. She graduated with distinction from Mater Admirabilis College of Education in 1971.
She studied Art at the Malta School of Art and Ceramics at the Malta School for Craftsmen. She has been a teacher of art and ceramics since 1971 in local government schools and is now subject co-ordinator for art with the Education Division. Meanwhile she is still teaches at Sir Luigi Preziosi Area Secondary School in St. Andrews.
In 1984 Sina set up her own Ceramic studio and continued to study ceramics in England where she worked with many potters specialising in different areas and techniques of the craft.
She is a member of the Malta society of Arts Manufacture and Commerce.
Sina has exhibited her work Malta, Germany, Greece and America.

Work
Sina’ s work is of an expressive nature. Her fascination with the vessel form started her on the exploratory journey of this medium .Her love of sculpture strengthened the respect she had for clay, which itself offers such possibilities as a sculptural medium.
Her work of the seventies was mostly related to vessels, both thrown and handbuilt.  Eventually the nature of the work took a more personal vein, becoming more expressive.
She learnt to appreciate the vessel form through her contact with Ganni Bonnici and her English tutors. Her Maltese tutor, Gabriel Caruana, showed her the joy of the free-style sculptural approach favoured by the Italian school of Ceramica d’Arte in Faenza. Now Sina’s work is hand built, often combining vessel-forming techniques with modelling and sculptural ones. She also makes murals and plaques.

Firing
The work is fired in an electric kiln at earthenware temperatures. Some of it is fired many times and various glazing techniques may be used on the same piece until the desired effect is achieved.
Some of the work is Raku fired on the roof of Sina’s house in a home-made top-hat kiln.
