Journal#2
The major idea of the section is the human condition.
The human condition is the experiences that every human being experiences, no
matter of sex, age, culture, religion, social status, or time period they live
in. There are many parts of the human condition. One of the major parts is the
problem of evil (Why do bad things happen to good people if God is all powerful
and all good?). All humans face this question at some point in their lives.
Other parts of the human condition are concupiscence (being mysteriously
attracted to evil), wounded intellect (at times our emotions overrun our
intellect and we do what we know is wrong), and death.
1.
Concupiscence-
concupiscence is that even though you may want goodness, we are attracted to
evil mysteriously. WE don’t want to do bad things but something makes them
appealing to us and after we do them we feel guilty.
2.
The Problem of
evil- If God is all power AND all good, how can he let bad things happen to
good people. Here is how Saint Augustine of Hippo puts it
a.
If God is all
good, he would desire nothing but good
b.
And if God is
all powerful, then he can have anything he wants
c.
But evil exists
as well as good
d.
Therefore,
either God is not all powerful or not all good, or possibly both
3.
Wounded
Intellect- That the balance between emotions, desires and intellect are thrown
out of sync because of original sin. WE are sometimes overrun with emotion or
desire and do what we know is wrong.

One Good Question- What will I do when I personally face the problem of evil?
I should try to resist the times I am affected by concupiscence and wounded intellect. I know that I can never really stop these from effecting me but I should try to be more aware of their presence in my life and sometimes if I realize they are effecting me in a situation I can try to stop myself, and choose the right thing to do.
