| Wed 19.09 - Arrived in Katherine at 6pm. Stayed in the Kukkaburra Lodge Hostel. Definitely to be recommended. The room had a self contained kitchenette. A hell of a lot better than using a kitchen along with 15 other people. Went for a walk along the main street. Bigger than we thought it would be. Saw a missing poster of Peter Falconio. Weird. He went missing a few 100 kms south of here. Thur 20.09 - Woke at 8.15am with Claire telling me there was a Gecko on the wall. Had our free breakfast and booked cruise along the Katherine Gorges for the afternoon. Spent rest of morning looking at Didgeridos. Got picked up at 12.30pm and went on cruise. The spectacular Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park is a must-see. The 13 wonderful gorges of Nitmiluk National Park began 23 million years ago as torrents of water pouring along tiny cracks in the earth. The National Park is rich in Aboriginal art, with rock paintings representing the spiritual 'dreaming' of the Jawoyn people, the traditional owners of the land. There are fantastic views from the boat. The cliffs on either side are easily 100m high. Some people were canoeing it. Fair play to them. Looked like hard work in the sun. The guide pointed out a few baby crocs about 1 ft long. We went swimming in the Gorge. We were both a bit nervous about this. My theory was that where there are baby crocs, there is a mummy and a daddy croc. We stayed in the water for 10 mins and then decided that was enough. Great experience and like no other place that I've swam in in my life. Fri 21.09 - Checked out of hostel, and walked out to the School of the Air. This is where a teacher talks to students over a large area using CB Radio. This is for all the kids living on the remote stations (farms) through the Northern Territory. They covers an area within the Northern Territory is approximately 800 000 square kilometres. Comparatively speaking this is about one and a third times the size of Botswana, or three times the size of England, Scotland and Wales. Unfortunately the tour was fully booked out. We then went to the Woop Woop Didgerido shop. It was closed so we just went back to the hostel packed and went to catch the bus. As we were waiting for the bus, Amy and Tom roared at us. They had just stopped here for a break and had seen us. We coaught up of where we'd been. Got bus at 1pm. |
