Lesson 5:  Solved Examples
Another equation we aim to solve:
What is the number that x stands for?

We want something like
With x on the left and a number on the right.

Lets start by making the 9 disappear. To do this we must subtract 9 from BOTH sides of the equation.
On the left side: 9 9 equals zero

On the right side: 4 9 equals -5

We now have
Next step: 5/2 must go!

Well, 5/2 is multiplied by x so we must divide by the same number 5/2. Or we can multiply by the opposite fraction 2/5. Its easier.

Lets do it on
BOTH sides.
On the left side: 2/5 times 5/2 is equal to 1. Because the 1x is the same as only x we got the x alone on the left side.

On the right side: -5 times 2/5 is equal to -2

So the final answer is
Which is true if we try to use -2 instead of x in the starting equation.

Congratulations!

The equation is solved !
