The USS Saratoga came across a multi crewed vessel that was of the same configuration but larger. It is unknown how many of these ships exist and considered a recent change in tactical capability.
Generally most Federation technology has little affect upon them. They are impervious to tractor beams, transporters and most weapons.
However modified nano-probe technology has proven very affective against both the ships and Species8472.
Species 8472 have been building up steady intelligence about the Federation.
It is believed that similar operations may be taking place within non Federation areas.
Using their Isomorphic technology they are capable of pulling off a convincing shape shift into any form neccessary.
The USS Saratoga encounterd a hive of them infiltrated into all levels of Tandorian and Belnarian society.
It is unknown as to the purpose of this operation but the best guess is that they were attempting to build a central base of operations.
They are also known to use training bases known as domes.
They can re-create in detail any environment in which to practice their covert capabailities.

This Species lives singularly within Fluidic space and has a hard time with the concept of individual species. The encounter with the borg has meant that a cold war appears to exist between Species8472 and our universe.
Contact is possible but negotiation difficut due to their total mis-trust of the Federation.
