Note: I do NOT have all the expansion packs. I bought the Mega Deluxe version and got The Sims, Livin' Large (Livin' It Up), Hot Date and House Party. The only extra expansion pack I have is Makin' Magic. I do NOT have Unleashed, Superstar or Vacation.

The Tiki Duplex is located on Lot 6 in the original neighborhood:

There are two odd shaped houses with a smaller second storey that is connected by a patio. A bamboo fence encloses the patio to keep the simmies from walking off the edge.

Above: The patio is the entertainment center for the lot. There's a TV, bookcase, easel and a bar.

The kitchen photo (above, left) shows off the angles in the floorplan, as well as some of the great tiki furniture I found online (see Ye Olde Shopping List below). The bedrooms (above, right) are upstairs and square in shape. The lot is designed for six people; I have two sets of parents with one child each living here now. And yes, the children share their parents' bedrooms!

Ye Olde Shopping List

I tried to include as many Maxis items as I could since I got the inspiration for this tikinsanity from the wallpapers that came with the game. However, you'll need to go grab these items to complete the house. Don't worry: They all came from free sites! I have linked directly to the page where you grab the items, and clicking on a link opens a new window for you! How easy is that?

Note: For sites with all the tiki downloads on one page, just click on their tiny banner in the left column. If you have to go to several pages within a site, click on the links in the right column.

Beautiful items for a tiki-themed hotel. All you need is the tiki mugs object, which acts like a coffee pot.

Then go get the sand castle so your tikisims can play in the dirt.

Three handy appliances here (although I grabbed them all!): light wood trashcompator trashcan, Maxis-matching tiki stove, and a single's stove that goes on top of a counter, looks like a stove, but functions as a microwave. Great stuff!
Grab the Tropical paintings set. (You'll need to join her Yahoo! group first, then get the paintings from the Page 3 area within the group. The file is called "BSTropicalP.zip." Then, do like I did and grab every painting she's got! I end up putting the "Poppies" pair in just about every house I build.)
Download C+C's Super Deluxe Fun Frame (hacked for kids and pets), and any other great items you may be needing. Choose "Downloads" from the menu at the left, then "Pets & Kids." This item is the last one on the page.
Now your simmies can swim in fake rivers you create not with the water tool but with the Water Swim Rug. Of course, you'll need the Swim Frog, who will encourage up to four simmies to swim on his water rug! Scroll down near the bottom of the page for these items.
Gardening Sims is one of the BEST collections of landscaping objects for your Sims. I think I've downloaded almost everything from this site! Most of her plants are slope-enabled for a more realistic look. For this lot, though, all you need is the meadow short yellow flowers; they're about halfway down the page for her "Meadow Pack." Then go over and get Stone 2. Then just go crazy and get all the lovely things here!
The Tiki Duplex uses the Surfboards 3 wallpaper as the exterior wall. You'll need to download the set to get it.

And if you'd like your tikisims to look tropical, grab these gorgeous skins! She has a hula dancer, Hawaiian warrior, Tahitian dancer and Maori couple skins. Tikilicious!

Download the complete Africa set for the floor used in this duplex.
John Adaone's cauldron food processor was probably meant for a witch's home, but it adds a bit of tiki savagery here. It's in the third row, second column.

You also need to download Libby's tiki bedroom suite so you'll get the tiki desk/table.

Lphnt's Trunk
Lphnt's old simwater floor tile is hidden away in this Yahoo! group. You'll need to join before you can download this floor tile. Look in the Sim Ponds folder for a file called waterfloor.zip.

Great tiki bathroom set. Be sure to grab the "Tiki Tinkler" toilet, Freaki Tiki curtained shower and the alabaster sink ~ tiki green.
The best objects out there! Unfortunately, none were tikified so you'll have to settle with these Zen life form plants. You need the first one and the third one. They're both in the first row and have yellow-orange pots.
Persimmon Grove has one of the BEST collections of landscaping objects for your Sim lots. She's from New Zealand and since tikis originated in her part of the world, it was only logical to find tikiesque stone sculptures here! However, I tend to use a LOT of her objects on my lots, so the link to the left will take you to her site index. This is an exhaustive list so read carefully and grab the following plants and object:
  • grass tree (under "tree grass")
  • nephrolepis fern
  • Abyssinian banana
  • tree fern
  • Nikau palm
  • Easter Island maoi (all four sizes)
  • sloping stream boulders (get "sloping boulders A")
Oh, no! It's a tiki nightmare! Shannanigan has a fabulous "Tiki Nightmare" set. Go grab the single bed, lighted tiki headboard, dresser, end table, planter and wall mirror. (And while you're at it, you should get her retro chic skins, as well!)
Cute "Hula Hula" set features a HD-sized single table with matching chairs, and a tiki podium. For my house, all I used was the Palmeira "Hula Hula" potted palm.
Inge has created very handy "permalamps." Go get the bulkhead light permalamp. And while you're there, get the apartment controllers. They come in sooooo handy when building apartments; however, you do NOT need them to play this lot.
I like Maxis' garden lamp but always thought it looked weird sitting on a tile all by itself. Luckily, the folks at The Simposium did too so they added a shrub and made the lamp smaller. Go get it!
The English version of this site is down so I clicked around and was able to figure out which page to link to. From this link, grab the bamboo -- the plant on the far right. There are some really nice looking objects at XM Sims' main site, by the way.
???
I can't seem to find the "garden edging" object I used to hide the lot's borders. I'm going to crank up my Sims game now and see if I can get more clues about this object! Sorry!

So, what the heck's a "tiki" anyway?
According to Dictionary.com, there are three definitions of "tiki."
  1. Mythology. A male figure in Polynesian myth, sometimes identified as the first man.
  2. A wooden or stone image of a Polynesian god.
  3. A Maori figurine representing an ancestor, often intricately carved from greenstone and worn about the neck as a talisman.

How did tiki become popular in the United States?
Blame it on the boys in blue -- and green and khaki and all the other colors of military uniforms. The men and women stationed in the Pacific during World War II brought home tons of doodads from that part of the world. And there were several famous bars that helped spread the "polypop" (fake Polynesian popular culture) here in America. For more info, check out the tiki entry in the Wikipedia or About.com's tiki info in the cocktails section.

Like this background? It's from Pixel Decor. She's got some really cool retro patterns you'll probably recognize from some objects people have created for The Sims.
