These small sculptures (approximately 7 inches - 18cm tall) are produced in high density plaster, finished with acrylic paint and graphite paste. The weight of the material and the finish make these sculptures look and feel like bronzes, but at a fraction of the cost.
The male form was inspired by a sculpture by Rodin. I originally thought that the deeply clefted back was a flight of Rodin's imagination; but then I watched a body-building contest and saw that it is possible for some men to have such bodies.
The female form was a reaction to the classical approach to depicting the female form; typically a slim girl with very unrealistic breasts "perched" somewhere on her chest. I sought to add weight to the figure.
Both sculptures are offered in two standard finishes
- Graphite over gold, which looks like a bronze that has been kept indoors and polished over the years. The gold colour shows through on the high points of the figure (nipples, collar bones, shoulders ....) - Graphite over green, which looks like a bronze that has been kept outside, showing "vertigris" on the high points. |
