Personal Statement
The human body is the most engaging theme in art. Everyone recognises the human form, we can all relate to it and we all have favourite body shapes and movements. My work concentrates on depicting the human form, as life-casts and abstracted athletic figures.
My main theme is capturing beauty through life casting. Everybody is a living sculpture and we are all beautiful in many ways, but we generally don't recognise it. The Pose is Paramount - if you stand (or sit or lay) correctly you can be many time more beautiful. Even super-models look frumpy when they are standing, slumped at a bus-stop. Look at the sculptures on this site and see if you think that "ordinary" people have beautiful bodies!?
Sculpting materials are important. In the past they have formed a barrier to the enjoyment of sculpture - traditional materials (plaster, stone and metal) are so heavy that they are difficult to transport and display, they are fragile, expensive, difficult to work and often deteriorate unless carefully maintained. So in the past portrait sculptures were the preserve of the "ultra-rich". I have combined the use of modern materials with a traditional aesthetic to produce sculptures that "normally rich" people can enjoy.
Immortality, vanity and exhibitionism play important roles in my work. I want to leave behind a body of work when I shuffle off this earth. My clients want to capture their looks before age and gravity take their toll (although I have sculpted some gorgeous older people too!). There are two comments my models often make: "in years to come I'll show my grandchildren what a babe / hunk is was when I was younger" and "I don't mind if you sell copies of my body to other people - just call me every so often to tell me how many you've sold". |
