Kit: Italeri 1/72 F-15E Kit # 166 Price: 5.99 Decals: Prototype aircraft F-15E No.1 Notes : Eagle Strike decals used for 48th FW aircraft 5.00 Review and Photos by: Andrew Whiteley
The Kit : Having visited RAF Lakenheath last year I decided to model a 48th FW F-15E which we had spent all day looking at. After much research I decided to give the Italeri kit ago. The price was right and having just built their fine EF2000 kit it seemed like a good choice. The kit is easy to build and went together well. Small amounts of filler were needed on the wing roots but nothing major. The biggest problem I had was the two piece canopy. I dont know if it was me but I had great problems getting them to meet in the closed position. In the end I glued the two halves together then attached them to the fuselage and used filler round the front section to fill the holes. Obviously if the canopy is displayed open you wouldnt get this problem.
Conclusion : The finished kit looks good, and looks right ! Their doesnt seem to be enough hard points on the aircraft, but this can be remedied without too much work. I was disappointed there were no drop tanks included in the kit as most F-15E pictures I have show them carrying at least two tanks under the wings. The kit decals were for the prototype and I purchased the Eagle Strike decals for the 48th FW aircraft. This was the first time I had used Eagle Strike and I was most impressed. You get three Kosovo Eagles and I finished mine as the 494th FS. I recommend this kit just remember that tricky canopy.
