Why do teeth need a regular examination?Horses teeth are very important to their wellbeing. The horse's back teeth (molars) need the surface-to-surface contact to meet closely and fit into each other to grind food into digestible sized pieces. If food is not chewed large particles will ball up in the horse's intestines. Severe impaction can lead to colic and if often the result of improperly cared for teeth. Unlike human teeth, horses teeth are continually erupting through the gum therefore requiring regular floating. Any discomfort in the mouth will significantly affect your horse's way of going. Having your horse's teeth rasped on a regular basis will ensure your horse is comfortable in it's mouth and sharp edges and/or hooks are removed for they start causing problems. Any dental abnormalities should be assessed as soon as possible. How Often should my horse's teeth need checking? On average every six months but all horses are different and Shamrock will advise you when your next appointment is due after examining your horse's teeth. |
