Ripon Cathedral
This is the Choir Screen- which is similar to York Minster. However, whereas York Minster's Screen is all Kings of England, this one has prominent Bishops on the left hand side and notable Kings on the right. Above the Bishop and Kings are angels playing instruments and doing other angel-like, praise god activities. The statues are actually not Medieval- all that stuff was destroyed in the dissolution. You can see the cross on the alter here covered up- the main alter further back is covered too. Above the Screen is where the organist plays.
This is the main alter at the back of the church. As you can see it is covered up because of Lent. They had a good mixture of stainglass dating from different times- most of it recent. Some of samples were pretty nice.
Here are a couple good shots of the choirstalls. These are really hard to get on film becasue of lighting and the wood being so dark in color. The choirstalls are over 500 years old. They were crafted by three local craftsmen, and it took them five years to do the entire thing. It is really filled with a ton of detail. It has monsters and all kinds of cool stuff, no one carving is the same. They were closing up the church by this time, so I was only able to get a couple shots.
This freaken column was just massive- I had to get a shot of it. The other side isn't even half as big. It is really something. Being in these buildings just make you feel really small. Then you have the cross drapped with the royal purple. Yeah- Ripon Cathedral was pretty cool, and Ripon was a nice little town too.
