Pictures from Helmsley and Rievaulx
The keep is only half there, but it can be seen from all around the countryside. The west wing of the castle used to be the living quarters of the Lord and Lady and any high honored guests. It was built later. I am standing across the moat on another rise.
As I started my pilgrimage, I turned and took a picture of the castle from a distance. Then, the fields gave way to forests. Then I was in dark, muddy woods!
Here is where the forest gave way, and I was on top of a hill overlooking the world! Then above that is when I came down the other side of the hill. I am near the Abby now!
Above is my first glimpse across the fields at the Abby. It is really awesome! Then these other two shots are up close. The Abby had stone buildings all around it for the brothers to use- kitchens, day rooms, sciptoriums, refectories, living quarters, everything you'd need to maintain 650 people.
Finally, here is Duncombe Manor- the place I found getting lost in the woods. It was really pretty.
BACK ONE!
