Ibiza

When the average American thinks of Ibiza, they conjure up images of Wild on E TV specials and pure hedonism; a wild freak show where anything goes and everyone is either drunk or drugged out. Granted, we saw our fair share of three legged midgets riding donkeys, but Ibiza is a place where people come to vacation from around Europe. There were groups of high schoolers on beach week type trips, older couples, and families with small children. The club scene is huge there, and it definitely attracts partyers from all over the world, but by no means did club goers make up the majority of the vactioning population on the island. The clubs are popular, but admission usually runs $50 and drinks are $10-$15, making a night out rather costly. Most people on a typical one week vacation would spend a night or two at the clubs. The nights run extremely late as well. People usually head into Ibiza town around midnight where you are harassed every three feet to buy passes for clubs. Then the place will clear out as people head to the clubs from 2-8. Ugh.
Now that you know that the island is not run by crazies, what is it like when you actually go into a club? You will see freaks. We left the island on a Sunday night, and we went to a party at Space from 5-7. The party started at noon and was going to run until noon the next day. There were people dressed in outrageous costumes, several obvious transvestites arguing with each other, and some other people who were obviously under the influence of some sort of fish paralyzer. Imagine how Luke Skywalker felt walking into the Star Wars bar and you will start to get the idea. It's not my scene, but it is definitely something to see.
One of the islands main attractions is the sunset on San Antonio beach on the north side of the island. There are several bars and cafes where people come to sit and watch the sun set over the ocean. The tables start to fill up around 7 pm in anticipation of the 9 pm sunset. Truly a memorable experience. Check out Marc and me at Cafe Del Mar.
Thanks for taking a look at my pictures. I hope they have given you an idea of what these places are really like. You have now earned the right to view the picture of the trip. This was taken in the Canaries around 3 in the morning after this Irish girl had been stalking Ben for nearly four hours. I snapped this photo as he was nearing the end of his rope, and I believe that her sneer and dangling cigarette really convey the depth of her obnoxious personality, while the disgust and frustration on Ben's face were equally apparent. It makes me laugh every time I look at it.
