Sunday 11th January 2004
I had another early morning on Thursday. The ferry from Roatan to the mainland leaves at 6am, so I had to get out of bed by 5am in order to get a taxi up to the ferry terminal in Coxen Hole. It was well worth getting up early though, as I got to see a spectacular sunrise over the ocean as the ferry steamed its way towards La Ceiba on the mainland.

From La Ceiba I had a 6 hour bus ride to Copan, broken by a 2 hour stop over in a bus station at San Pedro Sula. It must be said that the bus I was on was probably the most comfortable form of transport that I have used so far. I finally got to Copan at around 5pm, and managed to find myself a hotel that, joy of joys, had hot water. I was able to have my first hot shower for around 5 weeks. Bliss!

I got up early the next morning to look around the ruins at Copan (click
HERE to see the photos). They are set within what is left of the rainforest in the area, and in places haven't been restored so you can get an idea of how the forest engulfed them. As I had got there early, I had the place virtually to myself. It was quite atmospheric with the early morning mist and bird calls.

I met Nick and Sarah that afternoon (they left Roatan the day after me) and together we travelled on to Antigua, Guatemala. This was another 6 hour bus journey which was not nearly as comfortable as the previous days!

Antigua is a beautiful little city that used to be the capital of Guatemala until around 200 years ago. It has been designated a national monument and has retained all its character. All the streets are cobbled, and the skyline is dominated by the 3 volcanoes that surround the city. (Click
HERE for photos). The hotel we stayed at had an excellent roof top bar from which you can see right over the city and get the best views of the sunset.

On Saturday afternoon I bumped into Dan, a canadian  who I had met a couple of weeks previously on Roatan. Small world! Together with Nick and Sarah, we had one of the longest brunches I have had on Sunday morning!
