WWF Smackdown 2

The king of the ring returns, to give the other rivals a real Smackdown, ouch sounds nasty!

WWF Smackdown was a great game for fans of the sport (or whatever you want to call it), or even haters of this American entertainment. It was good for a laugh and it offered loads of wrestlers, moves and modes, it had everything you could ever wish for, and now its back with the same game with added extras.

The majority of the superstars are in there (I think) such as Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Rock plus others like the Undertaker, Rikishi, Triple H and Chris Jericho, ok you get my drift this game has a lot of wrestlers to offer. Some of the wrestlers need unlocked via the season mode, but more about that later.

All the originals modes make a welcome return, with matches such as single one to one matches, cage matches, just imagine you are a hamster trying to get freedom, Royal rumble, 30 people in and out of the ring, who will the last standing be? And a load of others such as the I quit match, go on make your rivals beg for mercy. New modes include table matches, where your aim is to smash your opponents through the tables and ladder matches, which you have to climb up a ladder to claim the belt. The modes are really interesting and it offers so much difference in each event, my personal faves include the chaotic Royal rumble and the tag matches.

It offers a load, ok, but how about the actual game?

Things have not really changed in this department, but who cares it offers new stuff added to the already great gameplay.

The graphics are great, with character facial expressions, and these models actually look like who they are meant to be, take a look at the Rock for instance, he is the spitting image just his body shape is a little out of shape and blocky. The moves are spectacular, and would you believe it they look more convincing then the real thing. The ropes wobble as the wrestlers go in to war against one another, arms and legs are bent back, bodies are thrown, kicked, punched and a load more painful sounding moves. The game engine is brilliant, most of the wrestlers look smooth with no jagged edges, but it does suffer from occasional slowdown, but dont worry it doesnt affect the game too badly.

The controls are configured greatly, and the finishing moves are so simple to pull off as the smackdown flashes up on the screen quickly press R1 and watch your wrestler shatter his opponents body.

The season mode is where you unlock new wrestlers and other cool stuff too, so it is a rewarding game too. The only problem is that the season mode does tend to get a little boring after a couple of plays, and the in game story is awfully repetitive showing the same over and over again in laid out text and in games movies.

The sound is another negative part as the characters dont speak or shout a word at all, just loud rock music and loud crashes and bangs can be heard, also there is no commentators which is a big disappointment.

WWF smackdown 2 is the new king of the ring over its prequel, there is not a lot new here, but it is rewarding when you lay the smackdown on the Rock.
