The Way Back |
 |
Exploring the outer edge
of this spiral arm of the galaxy, an expedition finds a ship floating in
space. It seems to be completely inert. One man claims to have seen it
before.
"It looks like the Liberator." he says, "but it can't
be. It was destroyed a long time ago."
|
 |
The ship cannot be entered, despite their
best efforts. If there is an emergency override for the airlocks, they
cannot find it. The ship is enormous - there are bigger vessels in the
federation, but they are passenger liners or carriers for fleets of
smaller, faster craft. |
 |
A salvage vessel is called for to bring
the ship back to a federation shipyard, where it will undoubtedly give
up its secrets. Still no sign of activity comes from the unknown ship,
no electromagnetic radiation of any kind, not even a small discrepancy
in heat can be detected. It must have been dead a long time. |
 |
A pathetically faint transmission, easily
misinterpreted as background radiation, and only transmitted when there
are no other energy sources nearby. DSV3 is trying to contact the
System. But the System has been dead for thirty years. No-one could
detect this signal unless they knew exactly what they were looking for.

 |
This ancient red sun doesn't even have a
planet to call its own, just a swarm of asteroids around it. There is
great mineral wealth to be found here if you know where to look, but
with such rich veins to mine elsewhere, why would anyone bother?
Not all of these slowly tumbling rocks are the same. It has been a good
place to hide.
