Brett started playing cricket at a young age, following in his older brother's footsteps. All three Lee siblings enjoyed outdoor sports such as soccer, basketball and skiing. When they did get inside mum, Helen a trained piano teacher, encouraged them to persue piano lessons. She says "They were all good, but Shane and Brett were too restless to take to the piano for long. Especially Brett. He was very good, but he didn't have time to learn because he couldn't sit still for five minutes. But he always loved his cricket."
