Peter Ferris first appears in the 1829 assessment list of Wells Twp, Bradford Co., PA whichindicates he perhaps arrived in 1828. One year later in the 1830 assessment list the names of Peter and Joel Ferris appear and in 1831 there is a notation that Joel had removed from the township. Peter Ferris (spelled Faris) was age 60 and under age 70 on the 1830 census numeration of Wells and there was also a Peter Ferris, Jr., family enumerated in 1830. Joel and Peter, Jr., were presumed sons of Peter.

Notes for JOEL E. FERRIS:

From a sort of McEnroe, McFarland Ferris family history which was self-published by a distant relative in April 1997. In that history on page 19, it states the following: " In addition to several US census listings, Joel is listed in various City Directories of Elmira, NY from 1874 through 1890. His obituary from the Nov. 4, 1918 issue of ELMIRA STAR-GAZETTE has also been obtained. It states that he was a manufacturer of cut glass articles in Elmira. He was survived by his wife ; four sons (John C., George R., Frank and Harry) all of Elmira; 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild."

"Joel E. Ferris, a manufacturer of cut glass articles in this city several years, died Sunday at 10:45 a.m. at the family home 300 Orchard Street, aged seventy five years. Mr. Ferris had been ill six months and his death was not unexpected. He is survived by four sons, John, George, Frank and Harry, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. The funeral will be held privately at the family home Wednesday at 2 p. m., the Rev. W.T. Henry to officiate. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery." Elmira Starr Gazette, Monday, November 4.
