Alun Lewis

Alun Lewis: Death and Beauty

Alun Lewis was a real person. He was a Welsh Poet who killed himself during the second World War. Peter played Alun in a BBC Wales documentary called Alun Lewis: Death and Beauty. I heard tell that although Peter is Welsh, his accent was nothing like Alun's, and he had to do quite a bit of study to get it right. The documentary is worth watching, just for that, although it is up to tastes whether you like the poetry and writing that fills the show. Personally, I like the format of having an actor reenact the life of someone, rather than having JUST friends and relatives speak for the subject. I wish our Biographies were like that. And seeing Peter look into the camera, do that lovely Welsh accent (love those rolling rrrs!) and recite poetry just sends me to heaven!

Another thing Peter said about this is that is came right after Uncovered. He thought going from Max to Alun was very interesting, and he could explore different parts of his own psyche because they were so very different. Alun was soft, retrospective and intellectual, whereas Max . . . well, you can see for yourself on HIS page!

Our own dear Ames has a page of screen caps for Alun

Ratings:

For viewability, I give it a 7 (Again, there are no really wonderful copies of this, and the ones we do have are marred by numbers at the top of the screen.)

For character, I give this one a 9. He is a real person, and the poetry is lovely.

Familiar Faces

Actually, there is a familiar face in this - Cathryn Harrison, who is in Soldier, Soldier (Laura Cadman) and Murder in Mind (Eileen) plays Freda in the life-action flashback!
