SIMCOPTER: COMPLETE FAQ, MANUAL, AND PLAYER'S GUIDE
===================================================
Compiled by Rich Weeds Nagel

This is a single compilation of all of the SimCopter Readmes, the SimCopter CD
online HTML manual (converted to plain text format), a complete list of cheats
and command line parameters, a list of all of the default career city names and
filenames and their default difficulty settings, a list of all of the default
keyboard commands, and general playing help for SimCopter in plain DOS text
format (everyone chant with me, "DOS TEXT! DOS TEXT! DOS TEXT!" <G>).

I take absolutely no credit for any of the material in this guide, as all of
the material is directly from SimCopter or other third party sources. I simply
wanted a complete compilation of all of the information in one easy to read and
easy to search source.

General Simcopter FAQ
=====================
Q: Why won't TWEAK work?

A: To use Tweak, you must be sure that you have a version above version 1. Or
in other words, install at least the upgrade to version 1.01, from the
downloads page. Check out the question "How can I tell what version I've
got?" to find out what version you have now. Then you need to make sure of
   these things:

Make sure Tweak and all it's files are installed on your hard drive in the
SimCopter/Tweak directory. You can try to run it from the CD, but it won't
   work that way.

When you run Tweak, you can only change one file: sim3d.twk. But it has all
the stuff in it, so that's OK.

A note here, you can run tweak if you only have the original version 1.0 of
SimCopter, but it will not work right. That was one of the main changes in
the 1.01 patch, to install a version of Tweak that worked right, and to put
it on the hard drive for you.

Q: What's the fuss over DirectX 5 and the Graphics Blaster 3D?

A: The software drivers provided with Creative Labs' Graphics Blaster 3D (NOT
3D Blaster, its a different chip) are not DirectX certified. What will
happen if you install Directx 5 after installing the drivers for this card
is that DX5 replaces the driver with a generic that won't work with the
card! I was all confused about that, until I realized that what Directx does
is check and if your drivers are not DX certified, it replaces them. I knew
it replaced some drivers, but I did not realize that the manufacturer could
have a DX certified driver that would prevent DX from replacing it. The
Graphics Blaster 3D works fine with DirectX 3 and 3a, with the drivers from
the installation disk, but you really should get the update to enable it to
   work with DirectX5.

There are two solutions. One is simply to go to: ftp.creaf.com (Creative
Labs FTP site) for the update.

The other is this: The chip used on this video card is manufactured by
Cirrus Logic, and is the one ending with number 5464. So you can go to the
Cirrus Logic website and download the drivers for this chip, using them
rather than the ones provided by Creative Labs. It is 3 files, k546xd6.zip,
k546xd7.zip, and k546xd8.zip. Unzip them all to the same directory and
follow the directions included on how to install them. I would recommend
turning off the Blaster Control utility first if you have it running, and
don't allow it to start on startup anymore, you'll have that option later.
IMPORTANT: if you want to ever uninstall the Cirrus driver you will have to
use the find utility and find the file "modesw16.dll" and delete it.

I have tried both solutions, and I believe downloading and installing the
upgrade from Creative Labs is best, but I leave the other solution there
(Cirrus Logic info) because it could be an advantage to know exactly what
   chip your card uses.

Q: I keep getting a "Fatal Error" whenever I load "KewlCity" (any particular
user city)! Also, how do I do a Safe Load?

A: Your computer is dying. No, just kidding. Most of the time when you install
the update patches, some or maybe even all of your old user cities will do
this. Or a city you got from someone who didn't install the patch. All you
can do is do a "safe load", by holding down the CTRL key when you load them.
This will load the cities "fresh", in other words it will be like you are
starting the city for the first time, which is real OK if you really are.
Otherwise, you'll lose your points, copters, and stuff.

Q: How can I tell which version I've got?

A: When you are in the game, hit CTRL-V.

Q: What's with the guys flying around, and what is the 1.01 patch for?

A: This is part of the unauthorized code in version 1.0 that prompted Maxis to
fire the programmer. There is kissing guys, flying guys, guys in swimsuits,
and in the final scene instead of the band like it is supposed to be,
they're all in swimtrunks and stuff. It seems this guy saw where 'hot babes'
were being used as some of the people in the game, and so he decided that
since heterosexual sexuality was being used in the game, then why not
homosexual sexuality? The homosexual nature, though, is not easy to pick up
on, in fact it was some time before anybody even noticed it. Download the
patch to fix this, and it will also install TWEAK, a utility to change game
defaults. TWEAK is included in the original, but it doesn't really work
   right. The upgraded version will.

Q: What's the 1.02 patch do? And whats all this rot about 'real flight mode'?

A: The 1.02 patch adds a more realistic flight model that you can use if you
have either a joystick and rudder pedals or a 4-axis joystick like Microsoft
Sidewinder Pro (there are others, SWPro is an example). Also it has a
rendering bug fix, and the fire and smoke are enhanced (really looks good).
In addition, if you have a 3Dfx Voodoo Chipset like a Diamond Monster 3D or
Orchid Righteous 3D, there is a demo type mode so you can view the game in a
different way. Note that you can't PLAY in this mode. If you don't have a
fancy joystick or a 3Dfx chipset, I think it's still worth getting just to
   enhance the fires.

Q: OK, if I want to have the 1.02 version, it doesn't matter if I installed the
   1.01 first or not, right?

A: It will install fine without putting the 1.01 first. HOWEVER, the game will
be much more likely to run right if you put on the 1.01 patch first. So I
recommend you use both patches. When you install the 1.01 patch you will
need to reboot before installing the 1.02.

Q: How do you do the screen shots? When I try to, the colors are all messed up.

A: To do screen shots in SimCopter, you have to run the game in the windowed
mode. You do this by setting your screen display to 256 colors, 800x600
resolution. Then start the game from a DOS prompt in Win95, with the command
'simcopter -w'. Once you get it going in a window, then you can use your
favorite method to do screen shots, I like Hypersnap, but you can just use
   Windows regular Alt+PrintScreen.

Q: Where do I get an Apache?

A: Ok, first of all, not all cities have an Apache helicopter. Only those
cities with a Military base have them. But in the cities that DO have an
   Apache, there are three ways:

   1) Find the Apache at the Military base and get out of you helicopter and
      get in the Apache.

   2) Use the cheat 'I'm the CEO of McDonnell Douglas', go in the hangar, click
the catalog button, type '3', then go outside. It will be there, if
      available.

   3) Sell your helicopter, then type use the cheat 'I love my helicopter'.
This will warp you to your helicopter, and since there will be none but
the Apache, you will be warped to the Apache.

Remember, this only works if there really is an Apache in the city!

Q: When I try to drop off sims at the hospital (or wherever), they always get
   hurt.

A: In my experience, if you are landing wherever the sim wants to be, and are
down LOW, they will get off or be carried off without your intervention. And
in this state, you can drag them off with the mouse and they're OK, if you
hold them close to the ground before you drop them.

Q: Where on earth do the transport people want to go?

A: Who knows? Seriously, this is a read the book one. Here's what you do: Pick
up the sims, click the M+ button, and follow the line. You know how theres
this line that always points to the hangar on the map? Well, when you pick
up sims for whatever, and click on M+, the line will then point to where you
   need to go with them.

Q: It says in the instructions that you can add your own radio stations by
adding a station in the 'sound', 'radio', 'stations', folder, but there
   isn't one.

A: OK, maybe this sounds dumb, but it isn't really all that obvious. When the
game is installed, it leaves the radio folders on the CD. So duplicate the
setup on your hard drive the way it is on the CD, and plug in your own music
(in *.wav format). Note that I am not saying that you have to copy all the
files, music, etc. You just have to duplicate the DIRECTORY STRUCTURE. In
other words, put in 'sound', 'radio', and 'stations' folders using the CD as
   an example.

Q: Ok, I've set up my radio station like you said, I put all the directories on
the hard drive like on the CD, but the custom ones I made still won't play!

A: There is one little detail the manual left out: the radio station has to
have an empty 'id' file. Like if you named your station 'kbof' you need an
empty file in the directory called 'kbof.id'.

Or, for more clarity, Here's what Maxis says: The method for creating radio
stations changed since the documentation was published. Here is an updated
explanation. If you got an error message such as the GPF in SIMCOPTER.EXE
when trying to create a radio station, this procedure should eliminate the
   problem.

   Create the following directory:

   \simcopter\sound\radio\stations\funk

Then, place the following in the the "funk" directory:

   1) a file with a name that is your FOUR letter station name starting with K
and having the extension ".id". For example, "kabc.id" The file doesn't
      need to contain anything.

   2) three directories, each containing your wav files. The directory names
need to be: "Music", "DJ", and "Jingle".

Q: I can't get this thing to play. The sound cuts up, and/or the game crashes.

A: Most of those problems are from DirectX 3 and old video and sound drivers (a
deadly combination). Now, DirectX 3 may or may not be the best it can be,
   but the main thing is:

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound and video before you
load SimCopter.Old video and sound drivers will cause DirectX 3 to mess
things up! By the way, a very good page for Windows 95 drivers and
everything else is Frank Condron's World O'Windows So the first thing is,
unload DirectX 3, get all the latest drivers, re-install DirectX, and it
ought to work.If not, you may have to use DirectX 2, which you can get from
Microsoft's ftp site. The game actually requires only DirectX 1.

Follows is a brief summary of the pertinent information in Bugnets article.

   * DirectX 3.0 will not currently work properly with any video card that has
an S3 Trio64V+ chipset. This includes Number Nine GXE and the Number Nine
Imagine 128 video card. A driver that is compatible with DirectX3 is
available at ftp://ftp.s3.com/pub/bbs/765drv/index.htm. There well be no
DirectX 3.0 driver for the Number 9 GXE card. Alternately, a great source
for ALL Windows95 drivers is at Frank Condron's World O'Windows.

Remember, crashing, etc. problems are not restricted to Video problems. I
had a bunch of trouble with my Sound Blaster AWE32 PnP because I had not
updated the drivers since I got it. And, speaking of sound, another tip here
is if all of the above doesn't work, try changing the IRQ and DMA channels
on your sound card. Sounds weird, but it worked for at least one person I
   know of!

Q: I've got a Compaq, and I'm going crazy trying to get the sound to work.
   Nothing seems to help!

A: For Compaq users the sound just won't play, don't blame SimCopter, blame
   DirectX. Here is the solution:

    1. Open Multimedia from Control Panel

    2. For sound cards, set playback device to game-compat. and check the "use
preffered devices only" check-box (Thanks to Josh and Lexmark)

If that doesn't work, my friend Kian called Compaq, and here's what he
   learned:

If the choice Game Compatible Device is not under playback in audio &
Multimedia: (The game compatible device is usually not in newer Compaq
   Presarios like the 4402)

This is how to add it:

    1. Open control panel. Then Open Multimedia.

    2. Click on the tab labeled "Advanced".

    3.Click on Audio Devices.

    4. Double Click on Audio for Modem Wave Driver.

    5. Check the box that says, 'Use audio features on this device'

    6. If there is a check on 'Do not map this device', un- check it, or in
       other words leave it un-checked!

    7. Restart Windows 95.

    8. Open control panel. Open Multimedia.

    9. In the Audio tab click on the choices for playback, you will see Game
       Compatible Device. Click on that.

   10. Run SimCopter! You will have sound!

Q: Why won't the game install right? It doesn't put all the files on the hard
drive and I can't do an upgrade.

A: It does this when your CDROM driver does not understand long file names. Try
to search the web using the search engines like Alta Vista or Yahoo for the
manufacturer of your CDROM and get updated drivers. Or, check out Frank
Condron's World O'Windows. Sounds weird, I know, but if the driver doesn't
understand long file names, then the install program cannot find these files
   on the CD.

Another thing is, if you used the 'minimal install' you won't be able to
upgrade, because you need at least the 33mb install on the disk before it
will do it's thing (update). If it won't let you re-install, try this:

   1) Go to the Control Panel and try to uninstall it in 'Add/Remove Software'.

   2) Didn't work? OK. If you've never diddled with the System Registry before,
be careful here. You will need to start up a program called REGEDIT. You
can start it by clicking 'Start' then 'Run' then typing in REGEDIT. The
FIRST thing I recommend you do is click 'Registry' and 'Export Registry'
to back up your system Registry in case you mess something up.

Then you'll click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER and find SOFTWARE then MAXIS. From
there you should see Simcopter. Click on simcopter and delete it. Do the
same thing on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USERS.

Be REALLY CAREFUL! You'll be OK as long as you don't delete ANYTHING
else. Now after closing that up, I recommend a restart, then you can
re-install the game, this time using the 'medium' or 'large' install.

Q: How do you drive the car?

A: You can't. Not really. If you use the arrow keys or the keys on the keypad
(with the numberlock off) you appear to be driving it, or something, but
really you are driving your helicopter, you're just not in it! (Note: heres
an update to that: S. Brewer says: I have figured out how to drive the car,
all you have to do is turn the helicopter in the way you want a little bit
before an intersection and it will turn once you get in the middle of the
intersection, but make sure where you are in the car and helicopter so you
know which way to turn. He may be on to something, but I'm not sure. Try it
   out!

Q: Can I go into any buildings?

A: In a word, No. If you get the patch, you can walk through the tunnels, but
the only building you can enter really is the hangar. Don't get confused by
the book: it says you walk into buildings - this means BOFF. You hit a
building. It doesn't mean you can ENTER them.

Q: How do I run the game without the CD?

A: You can't. Not any more. Used to be able to get a program called Virtual
CDROM. I will include some info on it here in case you somehow are able to
   find a copy of it:

Makes Windows 95 think you've got 2 CD drives. You make image files of the
CD and you can insert them into the virtual CD drive. It will make an image
file of the SimCopter CD that takes about 500MB. The size of the image file
depends on the size of the CD. Blood & Magic makes a file that's only about
215MB. I tried this with a lot of different CD's and it has worked on every
one, just like if I really did have another CDROM drive. The 15 day trial
version was at Logicraft Information Systems, but they took it off. Maybe it
worked TOO well, if you know what I mean.

The Cheats
==========
Type Ctrl-Alt-x during game play to bring up the cheat code entry box and then
enter the cheat code. Use capital letters where indicated.

A megaphone in the hand is worth two in the bush
- Allows you to use your megaphone even outside the helicopter.

Been there, done that
- Gives you the points you need to complete the current city.

Gas does grow on trees
- Gives copter full tank of gas.

Give me bucks or give me death: xxxxx (xx = bucks, 0-50000)
- Lets you ask for any money from 0 - 50000. However, the more you ask for,
the more likely you'll get 'death': immediate shutdown of game without
  chance to save.

Gort
- Plays the ending career cutscene.

I love my helicopter
- Sends you back to your helicopter.

I'm the CEO of McDonnell Douglas
- Lets you type '1' through '9' in the Helicopter Catalog to get any copter.
  1 - Bell 206 JetRanger
  2 - MD 500
  3 - Apache
  4 - Bell 212
  5 - Schwiezer 300
  6 - Agusta A 109 A
  7 - Dauphin 2
  8 - MD Explorer
  9 - MD Explorer 520N

Lights, Camera, Action!
- Makes your drive-in movie theaters play movies.

Out for a Sunday drive
- Puts the camera behind a car. You can use the numeric keypad keys, the arrow
keys, and the +/- keys on the main keyboard to control the car.

PAMCAREYGOLDMAN
- Picture of the lead programmer's wife appears on all movie screens and
  billboards.

Radioactivity
- Causes a nuclear power plant meltdown/explosion that damages most of the city
(save your game before you use this code).

Shields up
- Makes your helicopter invulnerable.

Stop and ask for directions
- Writes a text file to disk containing a text map of the level. The filename
  is C:\DUMP_BM.TXT.

superpowermultiply
- Speeds up your copter when you hold down the shift key. When the pilot is on
the ground, the shift key will turn him into a dog that runs fast and can go
  through buildings and on water.

The map, please
- Allows map to be seen when outside your helicopter.

There's no place like home
- Sends you back to the hangar, but your helicopter stays where you were.

Warp me to career: xx (xx = city number 0-30)
- During a career game only, let's you warp to any career city. City 29 is the
last city you can be warped to.

The Apache Gunship
==================
Perhaps the ultimate cheat, only available in cities with military bases, is
the Apache helicopter. Fly to the military base, land, get out of your
helicopter, and get into the Apache gunship-loaded with machine guns and
missile launchers. To use the Apache's machine gun, shoot the water cannon (you
have unlimited ammo). To shoot missiles, use the tear gas launcher (again,
unlimited ammo). You can attack all kinds of things with the Apache. For some
real fun, launch an attack on a nuclear power plant.

The SimCity 2000 Urban Renewal Kit, available with the SimCity 2000 CD
Collection or SimCity 2000 Special Edition, allows players to edit SimCity 2000
cities. To assure that an Apache is in a city, make sure it includes an F-15
tile. One will be transformed into the Apache.

The UFOs
========
If there is an Apache in the level, a UFO will be flying around. You can shoot
the UFO down using the Apache's missiles. The player will be rewarded with
points and money. When a UFO goes down over the water, it will turn into a boat
rescue mission - a rescue will bring BIG rewards. It takes 10 missile hits from
the Apache to down the UFO.

Other Tips & Hints
==================
If you start your helicopters engines, but exit the helicopter just before it
takes off, the helicopter may take off without you. You can then get into the
Apache, and shoot down your other helicopter. Fun!

Hit cars with your helicopter's water cannon and you might get money for the
car wash.

The bigger your helicopter is, then the more water it will hold. The more water
your helicopter is carrying the harder it will be to maneuver. Consider flying
with half a tank or less.

If you get a robber that is running around in the wilderness (outside the city
limits), it does no good to call a cop, because the patrol cars can't get
there. Pick up an officer at a police station and drop them off near the crook.
The officer will pursue and apprehend the suspect.

If you don't like fighting crowds to get to injured SimCitizens, consider
picking up a medic at one of the city hospitals.

If you're trying to pick up a sim(s) from either a rooftop or the ground, it is
possible to do it without having to land. When you go down to pick up a sim(s),
make sure you descend very slowly, especially near the ground, and if you're
careful, the sim(s) will hop aboard your helicopter if you're close enough to
the ground.

Pull your bucket in after it is full, then pull it out when you arrive at the
fire. It is easier to manuever when the bucket is in.

Sometimes, causing an injury, accident, fire, or some other incident, is a good
way to earn points and money. However, keep in mind that causing the incident
itself may take points and/or money away from you. The best incident to cause
is a traffic jam. You won't lose any points or money, but you will gain points
and money for stopping it.

If you have a medic(s) in your helicopter and you're performing a medevac
mission, drop the medic(s) out of the helicopter (while close to the ground),
and he/they will rescue the sim(s). Then you can land your helicopter when the
medic(s) have picked up the injured sim(s).

The difficulty of the game can be changed quite a bit by using the TWEAK.EXE
program found in the folder named TWEAK in the SimCopter folder.

After the final career city, aliens appear. After the aliens appear to be
finished talking, wait there for a few moments and they will start a new dialog
with funny stuff.

You can pick sims up in your water bucket, and make them fall off by dumping
water out of the bucket.

If you shoot a criminal with the machine gun or with a missile (using the
Apache helicopter), you get full points and cash bonus for the mission.

Once you have finished a career level, a message saying that you have completed
the mission and should return to the hangar appears. At the end of the message,
it also tells you that you have received $500 for your troubles. At this point,
you should save the game WITHOUT returning to the hangar. After you save the
game, leave the city, then load the game again, and wait a few moments. Then,
another message saying that you have completed the level will appear and you'll
get another $500. You can do this as many times as you wish.

If you take a sim to a hospital and drop him/her out of the helicopter onto the
roof of the hospital (while low enough that the sim will only be injured),
you'll hear a dispatch for a medevac mission. A medic on the rooftop of the
hospital will then go over to the injured sim, and rescue him/her for you,
which will end the medevac mission.

When you are a dog (using the "superpowermultiply" code) and you are carrying
an injured sim, holding down the shift key while moving either forwards or
backwards and then releasing the shift key puts the sim into a painful looking
position.

In SimCopter versions 1.01 and higher you can walk through tunnels.

If you drop a sim (including police and medics) out of your helicopter onto ANY
grass surface, the sim will not die (no matter how high you drop him/her from).

Greet some sims twice, and you'll hear them being abducted by aliens.

You can re-record .wav files so your pilot will use your voice when walking
around town. These .wav files are grunt1.wav to grunt6.wav.

When in the hanger try pointing to the various windows and objects to find
hidden messages. Inside the hangar, if you point to the little red spot on the
window in the back, you'll see a message saying that you've found Waldo.

Undocumented Command Line switches
==================================
SIMCOPTER -t
- Makes the game start in kind of a demo mode, the helicopter flys by itself.

SIMCOPTER -c
- Displays what's directly beneath your helicopter in the "Map View" window,
kind of like a helicopter mounted "ground cam".

SIMCOPTER -h
- Makes the fog distance attempt to automatically adjust to maintain a playable
  framerate.

SIMCOPTER -a
- Makes the ground, water, and fog black.

SimCopter Version 1.0.1.3 Readme
================================
Introduction to Readme

In addition to a few miscellaneous bug fixes, this release of SimCopter
contains an extremely realistic helicopter flight model, plus an alpha version
of 3D acceleration via the 3Dfx Voodoo Chipset.

This introduction to the README file provides a summary of the flight model and
how you can put it to use. The remainder of the README file are the
programmer's notes and detailed description of how the flight model and
graphics acceleration work.

Flight Model Requirements

For the flight model to work, you must have a joystick/throttle/pedal
configuration with 4 analog inputs. This can be a "3 axis joystick" with rudder
pedals, or a "4 axis joystick". A specific example of a 4 axis joystick would
be the Microsoft Sidewinder Pro Joystick, which has the stick (2 axes), the
throttle (1 axis) and the twist grip (1 axis). There are other, similar
joysticks.

Additionally, your joystick must be configured via the Joystick Setup found in
the Control Panel of Windows 95. See your Joystick documentation for specific
information on how to do this.

For the most realistic control of your copter, the recommended setup is a
joystick, separate throttle stick and rudder pedals.

There are three main pilot inputs when flying a helicopter:

Cyclic
Collective
Anti-torque pedals

The throttle is generally linked to collective and is not modeled separately in
SimCopter.

The "cyclic" controls how the plane of your rotor disk tips. Control of the
cyclic is usually assigned to the actual joystick (2 axis). By moving the
cyclic left, right, up and down, you tilt the rotor disk, which determines the
direction of movement. The cyclic is usually controlled with your right hand.

The "collective" is the overall thrust of the helicopter. Usually, control of
the collective is assigned to the throttle (1 axis). The collective works by
changing the pitch angle of each individual rotor blade, and is usually
controlled with your left hand.

The Anti-torque pedals control the thrust of the tail rotor, which in turn
controls how the copter will spin. Pedals can also be used when hovering and at
low speed to control direction. The left pedal should spin the copter to the
left, and the fight pedal should spin the copter to the right.

Here's how to assign controls in SimCopter to take advantage of the Realistic
Flight model:

Note: These directions assume you have a throttle stick, rudder pedals and a
joystick. Some configurations use things like "Throttle wheel" or "Twist grip"
in place of throttle stick and rudder pedals. Each joystick is a little
different. Make what ever substitutions are necessary for your particular
joystick.

1. Start SimCopter and enter a city... any city.
2. Press the "Escape" key to open the Settings menu.
3. Select "Controls".
4. Use your mouse to select "Joystick" control assignment.
5. Make the following command assignments to your joystick:

Anti-Torque:
Rotate Left/Right - Rudder Pedal control Axis

Cyclic:
Move forward/backward - Joystick "Y" (vertical) axis
Slide left/right - Joystick "X" (horizontal) axis

Collective:
Increase/Decrease Altitude - Throttle stick Axis

6. Save your configuration, then EXIT SIMCOPTER!!

The realistic flight model is enabled via command line parameters (switches)
when you start SimCopter. Here's what to do:

1. Create a standard Windows 95 shortcut to the SimCopter executable
   (SimCopter.exe).

2. Right-click with your mouse on the shortcut icon, and select "Properties"
   from the popup.

3. Click on the "shortcut" tab of the Properties box.

4. At the end of the command line (labeled "Target:" in the shortcut box),
   after SimCopter.exe, add a space.

5. After the space, add the following switches to suit your flying tastes:

/r1 turns on a reduced realistic model by not activating torque.
/r2 turns on the most realistic model.
    /o reverses your collective.
    /d reverses your rudder.

You must include the "/" for each switch.

6. Click the "Apply" button, then close the properties box.

The realistic flight model also provides an Engine ON and Engine OFF switch.
Start SimCopter via the shortcut, then enter the copter as you normally would.
The Engine ON switch is the keyboard command which you have assigned to "Move
Forward" (default X). The Engine OFF switch is the keyboard command which you
have assigned to "Move Backward" (default Z).

Once your engine is turned ON, increase your Collective setting and away you
go. Flying will be so realistic you could get airsick.

Tinker around with your collective and rudder. Reverse one, both, or neither as
you feel comfortable. You can even turn off your engine in mid-flight if you
want to practice autorotations.

3dFX Voodoo graphics Acceleration

If you own a 3D accelerator card based on the 3Dfx chipset (such a Diamond
Monster 3D or the Orchid Righteous 3D to name only two), you can check out an
early alpha version of Simcopter with enhanced 3D graphics.

To enable Voodoo 3Dfx acceleration, add the "/v" switch to the command line.
When you enable this acceleration, the game automatically loads the city
"happyland.sc2". Additional detailed information is provided at the end of this
README file.

SimCopter Version 1.0.1.3 Release Notes
=======================================
1) Summary

   This release contains:
    * Realistic Helicopter Flight Model Support
    * An Alpha Version 3d Acceleration via the 3Dfx Voodoo Chipset
    * Miscellaneous Bug Fixes

2) Realistic Flight Model

Requirements:

You MUST have a joystick/throttle/pedal configuration that has 4 analog inputs.
Primary configuration is done via the Joystick Setup found in the Control Panel
of Windows 95. In General, you would have to configure a "4 Axis Joystick" or a
"3 Axis Joystick" with Rudder Pedals.

For example, the Microsoft Sidewinder Pro Joystick, will meet the 4 axis
requirements since it has the stick (2 axis), throttle (1 axis) and twist grip
(1 axis).

For the most realistic control of your Helicopter the recommended setup would
be a joystick, separate throttle stick and rudder pedals.

Overview of Helicopter Controls:
--------------------------------

There are 3 main pilot inputs in flying a real helicopter:

 * Cyclic
 * Collective
 * Anti-torque pedals

A 4th input, the throttle, is generally linked to collective and is not modeled
separately in SimCopter.

The Cyclic controls the tip plane of the rotor disk. You would generally
assign control of the Cyclic to your joystick (2 axis). By moving the Cyclic
around in 2 dimensions (left, right,up,down) you control the tilt of the rotor
disk which in turn basically controls the direction of movement of the
helicopter. Generally the Cyclic is controlled with the right hand.

The Collective applies overall thrust or power to the helicopter. You would
generally assign control of the Collective to your throttle (1 axis). The
Collective basically works by changing the pitch angle of each individual rotor
blade. In a real helicopter, the Collective is a lever which is raised and
lowered on the Pilot's left and is also accompanied by a twist grip for
throttle control (this is so that rotor RPM can be maintained when blade pitch
changes, however you don't have to deal with this in SimCopter).

The Anti-torque pedals control the thrust of the tail rotor. In USA
manufactured helicopters, the main rotor spins counter-clockwise. This spin
creates a torque on the helicopter which applies a rotational force in the
opposite direction to the rotor spin. In other words, the helicopter will tend
to spin clockwise. This effect is increased as more power is applied to the
collective. The pedals are used to counteract this torque so that direction can
be maintained. The pedals can also be used in a hover and at low speed to
control direction. Pushing in on the left pedal should spin the helicopter to
the left and pushing right spins the helicopter to the right.

Control Assignment in SimCopter for Realistic Flight Model:
-----------------------------------------------------------

These directions assume you have a throttle stick, rudder pedals and joystick.
You can substitute "throttle wheel" or "twist grip" if that happens to be your
hardware configuration for assignments in the directions given below.

 1) Start SimCopter and enter any city.
 2) Hit the "Escape" key to bring up the menu.
 3) Choose "Controls"
 4) With the Mouse select "JoyStick" control assignment.
 5) Make the following SimCopter Command assignments to your JoyStick:

Anti-torque:
------------
Rotate Left/Right - Rudder Pedal Control Axis

Cyclic:
-------
Move Forward/Backward - Joystick "Y" (vertical) Axis
Slide Left/Right - Joystick "X" (horizontal) Axis

Collective:
-----------
Increase/Decrease Alt - Throttle Stick Axis

 6) Save configuration and exit SimCopter.

That's it! You should now be ready to enable the Realistic Flight Model.

Enabling Realistic Flight Model Control:
----------------------------------------

Realistic flight controls are enabled via command line parameters (switches)
when you start SimCopter. Windows 95 allows you to create shortcuts to
executable files. Create a shortcut to the SimCopter executable
(SimCopter.exe). Then right-click with the mouse on the shortcut icon and
select "Properties" from the popup. In the properties window you can now add
the switches described below to the command line for starting SimCopter.

Switches:

/r# (where # = 1 or 2 )

This turns on realistic mode. Using 1 gives you less realism and easier control
because torque will not be applied. 2 will give you the most realistic model.
You may want to start at 1 for practice and to get used to the basic controls
before moving to the 2 setting.

/o

This reverses your collective.

/d

This reverses your rudder.

Flying the Helicopter in the Game
---------------------------------

Enter your helicopter as you normally would in SimCopter. In order to get up
into the air, the main difference is that there is now an Engine ON and OFF
switch. The Engine ON switch is the keyboard key that you have assigned to
"Move Forward" (default X) and the Engine OFF switch is the keyboard key you
have assigned to "Move Backward" (default Z).

Once you've switched the Engine ON, the rotor should start spinning up. Just
increase your Collective setting and away you go - watch out for that building!

The engine may be switched off in flight if you want to practice your
Autorotations.

3) 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics acceleration
------------------------------------

If you happen to own a 3d accelerator card based on the 3Dfx chipset (Diamond
Monster 3D or Orchid Righteous 3D to name two). You can play around with an
early alpha version of SimCopter with enhanced 3D graphics that uses this
chipset. This capability is included in the same 1.0.1.3 executable however you
will have to download a separate file from the Maxis Web Site that contains the
texture maps for this capability.

This capability of SimCopter in the current version is completely unsupported.
The entire user interface is disabled. When you enable 3Dfx acceleration, the
game automatically looks for the city "happylnd.sc2" to open and jumps right
into it. The game completely runs and can be played in a fashion, but the
intent right now is just to provide you with a new way to see your cities if
you happen to own the right 3D card.

In order to enable Voodoo 3Dfx acceleration start SimCopter with the /v command
line switch.

4) Miscellaneous Bug Fixes
--------------------------

* Rendering bug fixed
* Some enhancements and changes made to smoke and fire effects.

SimCopter Version 1.0.1.4 Readme
================================
This file contains all the last-minute information we weren't able to put in
the instruction manual or Quick Start Guide. To make it easier to read, this
file is divided into three parts.

I.	Common Gameplay Questions and Answers
II.	Game Changes Since We Wrote the Manual
III.	Common Technical Questions and Answers

I - Common Gameplay Questions and Answers

What command-line parameters are available for SimCopter?

-w Run SimCopter in windowed mode. You can only run in windowed mode
if you are in at least 800x600 resolution and are running in
            exactly 256 colors.

-f Run SimCopter in full-screen mode. This is the default mode and it
            is 640x480x256.

-b Allow the game to run while it is in the background. Normally,
Copter pauses while another window is covering it or it is
            otherwise operating in the background.

-1 thru -4 Sets the difficulty level for user games, with 4 being the hardest.

-l Run SimCopter in a different language. If your Copter CD has
multiple language versions installed on it, then you will be able
to use this command-line parameter to set the game to run in one of
these languages. Note that once you set this parameter, the game
will remember it for the next play and the only way to return the
game to another language is to use -l again to reset it. To run
SimCopter in German, you would run it like this:
            "SimCopter.exe -lGerman".

-mn Sets the display message count. Normally, the game displays a
maximum of three messages at a time on the top of the screen. You
can override this and set it to a value as large as 12. For
example, to set it to 5, you would run it like this:
            "SimCopter.exe -m5".

-gn This sets 3D rendering cell size, from 1 - 4, with 4 being the
default. What the heck? Basically, if you run with -g1, rendering
will be better (fewer artifacts), but the game will use more much
memory. You should have a 24MB or greater computer before you start
            messing with this.

-xccc.. Allows you to enter cheat codes on the command line. Spaces in the
cheat code must be replaced with underscores here. For example, to
use the "Gas does grow on trees" cheat code on the command line,
you would run it like this:
            "SimCopter.exe -xGas_does_grow_on_trees".

Safe game loading/saving

If you are ever having a problem loading or saving .scu or .scc (SimCopter User
and SimCopter Career) files, you can hold down the control key to do a "safe"
save or load. To do a safe save while playing, hold down the control key before
saving and keep it held until the entire save is complete. To do a safe load
while at the main game menu, hold down the control key before you select the
load operation and keep it held until the screen game initialization screen
(the light blue screen with the small circling helicopter) appears. A
safe-saved game stores only the most basic information about the game, such as
the current city level, your points and your possessions. It doesn't save the
current missions, city state, nor helicopter state. If SimCopter encounters an
unrecoverable program error during play and prompts you to save the game, it
always will do a safe save. A safe load will load only the basic information
out of a saved game, even if the saved game was not saved with the safe save
option.

How do I increase the game speed?

On slower computers, the game's frame rate gets slow and chunky. On these
slower machines, you may have to turn down some of the graphics detail. If you
are running Copter on a Pentium-90 or slower, you'll most likely want to turn
some of the graphics down. Here is a good general method for optimizing your
graphics performance. First pick the options you want in the graphics settings
screen. The major time-eaters here are object textures and ground textures,
they can also be toggled on and off with Control-O and Control-G. Next, while
back in the game use the Control-K and Control-L to adjust the fog distance
(remember K for close and L for long) until the frame rate is most playable.
The last setting to try is resolution. The Control-Q key will toggle through
the 3 settings for this; always high-res, mixed high/low res, always low res.
In general low res will give you a 30% higher frame rate. Another command that
the game has is the Control-Alt-R command, which increases the application
system priority to a high value. If you use this command, other applications
will slow down considerably. This command only has a significant effect if
there are background applications using up a lot of processor time. You use
Control-Alt-R again to turn it off.

How can I change the joystick dead zone (threshold)?

You can edit sim3d.twk and go to the [Joystick] section. You should be able to
set the threshold value by simply setting a new value from 0 to 50 before
starting Copter. The joystick driver in Copter makes the joystick have a range
of -100 to +100. Setting a value of 20 means that between -20 and +20, the
joystick will act like it is at zero. Digital joysticks can usually have a much
smaller (and thus more precise) dead zone. Try something like 5 for digital
joysticks.

What joysticks and other input devices are supported?

SimCopter supports virtually any input device that can be configured under
Windows 95. In the joystick configuration screen, you can assign game commands
to the various joystick axes and buttons. Point-of-view control with the
joystick hat is used if your view mode is from within the helicopter. Support
for VR helmets such as the VFX1 is present but not officially supported in the
first release, because this support was included late in the project. To set up
a VR helmet, you assign the three view axes in the joystick setup screen to the
three view axes of the VR helmet. You can use the "View Yaw Multiplier", "View
Pitch Multiplier", and "View Multiplier Multiplier" tweaker setting in
sim3d.twk to adjust the sign and magnitude of the axis. Normally, all you need
is -1 or +1 for the axis. Note: You may need to turn off the view roll, due to
the way Copter does rendering.

What is the Tweaker and how do use it?

The Tweaker is an program located in the "tweaker" directory that manipulates
many game parameters stored in .twk files. Tweaker is not supported by Maxis
and we cannot support SimCopter if any of the .twk file settings are changed by
Tweaker or manually. The only .twk settings supported by Maxis are the joystick
settings in the sim3d.twk file, which are described above.

Are there any "Easter Eggs" in SimCopter?

Heck, yeah! SimCopter may have the record to date for the game with the most
Easter Eggs and spooks in it. Look for "Fire Divers," unusual auto behavior,
and a cataclysmic nuclear destruction sequence, among many others. None of
these eggs are harmful to your system in any way -- they just make the game do
unusual and interesting things under certain conditions.

My config file (copter.cfg) is not saving my settings.

The game writes an update for the configuration file when you quit the game and
when you leave one of the options screens (such as the "Sound Settings"
screen). If you start a new instance of SimCopter immediately after quitting
the previous instance of SimCopter, the new instance will read the old
copter.cfg file before the old instance has finished writing it. Waiting one to
two minutes before starting a new instance will ensure that this doesn't
happen.

The game is stuck as an icon on the bottom of my screen and clicking on it
won't bring it back.

There is some strange behavior in DirectDraw that sometimes causes this. To
bring back the game, you can usually left- and right-click (or left/right
double-click) at the same time on the icon at the bottom of the screen. This
only seems to happen if the game was running full-screen.

Help, help, I am stuck on top of a building or in a wall.

Unfortunately, game objects are not as solid as real objects, and players are
usually able to find ways to wriggle into tight places they can't get
characters out of. If you happen to find one, and you get stuck, just save the
game. When you reload it, you and your helicopter will be back at the hangar.

The sounds in the game are looping like a broken record and the dispatch
messages aren't working.

This is because Windows is not a protected operating system, and some previous
program crash messed up Windows in such a way that you must reboot the system
to make the behavior go away.

Movies can be played on the drive-in movie theatre?

Like the SimRadio system described in the manual, you can also add your own
movies to the drive-in movie theatres. Videos greater than 32K will only run on
a computer with at least 24MB of RAM installed, However, you would need to be
able to create small 32x32 pixel Smacker movies in the same palette that the
game uses. Smacker is an 8-bit movie compression-decompression system made by
RAD Game Tools. As of this writing, they were giving away the compressor tools
for free. However, their licensing agreement may prohibit unlicensed use of the
compressor for making movies to add to games. Check with RAD at
http://www.radvantage.com/.

In the small and large parks I see water, but why can't I fill my bucket?

The water depth is too shallow in parks to be able to drop a Bambi Bucket in
it. You will be unable to get water from shores, marinas, and small pools of
water, such as the water in parks.

The game won't let me run in windowed (non-full-screen) mode.

This is almost always because the original screen resolution is greater than
640x480 or is not in 256 (8 bit) color mode. Also, some video drivers have an
option that lets you have a large "virtual desktop" that is bigger than the
physical screen. You might not be able to run the game in windowed mode in this
case.

What version of DirectX does SimCopter require?

SimCopter ships with DirectX 3, but in reality, only requires DirectX 1.
However, Maxis will not provide technical support for the game under DirectX
versions prior to version 3, simply because we didn't do our testing under
DirectX 2 or 1.

Wow! I entered a new city and I had a full tank of gas and a completely fixed
copter!

Mayors of cities can be very generous in SimWorld, so when you leave a city
they'll fill up your tank, and fix you up, for no charge. They are either very
happy with your performance, or just want to get rid of you. Either way, it's a
win-win situation.

Help. The help file won't come up.

If you are running in full-screen mode and you call up the help file (F1), the
help file may open up behind the game. To view the help, just press alt+tab to
task-switch to the help file reader.

Sometimes, the radio voices get cut off just before they finish what they are
saying.

DirectSound currently has a bug that makes sounds cut a few milliseconds off
the end under certain conditions. This may get fixed by Microsoft some day.

What are helicopter resale values based on?

These values are based on the flight time the airframe has. If the helicopter
has a great deal of hours on it, it will have a lower resale value.

Autoplay is coming up after I uninstalled the game, and I can't reinstall!

If this happens, go into "Start", then "Run..." and type "regedit" and press
<Enter>. You will now see the Windows registry editor. In the window that
comes up, click on "HKEY_CURRENT_USER", then "SOFTWARE", then "MAXIS". If the
"SimCopter" entry is still there, delete it and these problems will go away, so
that you can install again. Please be aware that the Windows registry editor is
a highly sensitive configuration utility for Windows. Any changes that you make
in here may adversely affect your system. Please consult a professional before
making modifications with this program. Maxis cannot assume responsibility for
any damage that may be done to your operating system due to the modifications
that you make to the Windows system registry.

I hear the money sound effect, but I do not get a message on the screen.

If you do something that gives you only a little money, such as clearing a car
in a traffic jam, you get the money but no text message telling you about it.

II - Game Changes Since We Wrote The Manual

On p. 17 of the manual, it says you can dispatch up to 10 of each type of
emergency vehicle.

April Fools! In reality, you can only dispatch 5 of each type of emergency
vehicle.

Other changes to the Manual can be found in the "Help" Menu by hitting the <F1>
key within the game. This is in the form of a hypertext HTML document, and
contains all the other updates and corrections to the manual after it was
printed.

III - Common Technical Questions and Answers

Helpful information about your computer

Several of the problems you may encounter while using SimCopter might be
related to a setting in the computer. Below are common questions that the
Technical Support department will ask you should you need to contact them for
assistance. It is very helpful (and will make the phone call shorter, thus
saving you money) if you know this information ahead of time. You may also
figure out what is causing the problem while gathering this information, and be
able to play your game without even waiting for Technical Support to help you.

Do you have Windows 95 or NT 4.0?

SimCopter is a Windows 95-native program. This means that you must be running
Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 (or later) in order to even have a chance of
running SimCopter properly.

How much memory (RAM) do you have?

Go to a DOS prompt (Start, Run.., type in "command", and press <enter>) and
type in MEM <enter>. A chart with a bunch of numbers will appear. The number
you want is on the left, next to the words "Total Memory" about halfway down
the screen. Alternatively, pressing Control-V while playing SimCopter should
bring up a box that gives you system memory information.

What type or brand of video card do you have?

Sometimes this is a tough one to find out. The only foolproof way is to ask the
sales person when you buy your computer. Look through your computer
documentation for possible answers as well.

Running in Windows 95, try these steps:

Click on the Start button, select "Settings" and then "Control Panel."
Double-click on "Display" and click on the "Settings" tab. Click on "Change
Display Type" and write down the information in the box called "Adapter Type"
at the top. (To exit this box, click "Cancel" to make sure you don't
accidentally click something else. The buttons in this box can cause problems
if they are set incorrectly.)

SimCopter requires that you have a PCI video card or at least a very fast VLB
(local bus) video card. Otherwise, the game will play very slowly.

What type or brand of sound card do you have?

The only sure way to know is to ask the sales representative when you purchase
the computer. Look through your computer documentation for possible answers as
well.

Running in Windows 95, try these steps:

Click on the Start button, select "Settings" and then "Control Panel." Double
click on "Multimedia" and click on the "Audio" tab. The "Playback" and
"Recording" Devices should be listed here. If you have an authentic Sound
Blaster Card, the "Multimedia" Properties will specifically list your card as
being a "Sound Blaster", rather than "16 Bit Audio" or something like that.

How much free hard drive space do you have?

Go to a DOS prompt (Start, Run.., type in "command", and press <enter>) and
type in DIR <enter>. Some information will fly up the screen and at the very
bottom it should say "bytes free" and have a number next to it. That is your
amount of available hard drive space. If you are familiar with the "Windows
Explorer", you can also find out your available hard disk space by selecting
the "C:\" from the directory list.

What Is This Document?
----------------------
This document is intended to be a source of technical information and tips to
help you get your Windows 95-based Maxis product running.

This document is NOT a substitute for the documentation about Windows 95, about
your computer, or about your video or sound cards. You should use those other
docs as your primary source of information and as the final authority on how
Windows 95, your computer or your cards work.

Warning!
--------
Some of the information in this document is very technical. Read it very
carefully before you do anything to your computer. If you don't understand
something, don't do it. You can cause bigger problems than you're trying to
solve if you aren't experienced--and careful.

With that in mind, read on!

Some Common Questions and Answers
---------------------------------
What Are System Conflicts and What Can I Do About Them?
Conflicts are rare, but they do occur. If you are using other programs in
Windows 95 that load on startup, you may want to disable those programs to
prevent potential conflicts and to free up additional memory and system
resources. The most common potential conflicts come from screen savers. If you
are using a screen saver other than the default Windows 95 screen saver, you
may wish to disable it to prevent conflicts. Some virus protection programs may
also cause conflicts. If you experience trouble running a Maxis product for
Windows 95, try disabling virus protection programs.

How Do I Disable or Check Open Applications?
Your Taskbar will show you which applications are currently open and running. A
clean (empty) Taskbar is the best way to run your Maxis program. To turn off an
application using your Taskbar, click on the Taskbar item with your right mouse
button, and select Close from the menu.

How Can I Free Up Memory?
One of the benefits of Windows 95 is that it manages memory on its own so you
don't have to free up memory. If you have 8 MB (megabytes) of RAM memory
physically installed in your system, for example, then Windows 95 will always
keep that number at 8 MB, regardless of how many programs you turn on. There
are some things, however, that you should know about Windows 95 memory
management.

Windows 95 relies on virtual memory to keep your memory at a specific amount
while running applications. When you start an application, Windows 95 borrows a
portion of hard-drive space as needed to emulate RAM in order to keep your free
memory constant. This means that the more applications you open, the more
hard-drive space Windows 95 will require. If your hard-drive is close to full
with very little space free, then Windows 95 can't borrow any space for RAM,
and you'll likely receive an error telling you there's not enough memory, or
else program operation will become very slow.

How Can I Remove the Taskbar?
If the Taskbar interferes with the normal operation of the program, or if you
want it removed for aesthetic reasons, you can hide the Taskbar out of view.

	1. Click on the Start button.
	2. Select Settings from the menu.
	3. Select Taskbar from the next menu.
	4. Click the Always on top option off, and the Auto hide option on.
	5. Click on the OK button to accept the changes.

To retrieve your taskbar, you must minimize or close your open application and
return to the desktop. Move your mouse cursor to where your Taskbar used to be,
and your Taskbar will now show itself. To undo the changes, follow the above
procedure and reverse the settings in Step 4.

How Can I Set My Computer for 256 Colors?
Although this program will run in any resolution and color depth, best
performance is achieved when running in 256 colors. To change or verify the
color depth at which Windows 95 is running, access your Display control panel.

	1. Click on the Start button.
	2. Select Settings from the menu.
	3. Select Control Panel from the next menu.
	4. Double-click on the Display control panel.
	5. Click on the Settings tab at the top of the window.

Your color depth is shown in the middle of the window, on the left side. If the
colors are not set to 256, then you may wish to click on the arrow next to the
color selection and change the color depth to 256 colors. When done, click on
the OK button and restart your computer when prompted. The computer must
restart in order for new Display changes to take place. You will then restart
in 256-color mode.

Why Am I Not Hearing Any Sound?
Your Maxis program comes complete with music and sound effects. You'll only
hear sound if you have a sound card installed in your computer. If you know you
have a sound card installed, but you still don't hear any music or sound
effects, try the following:

* If your sound speakers require power, make sure you've installed fresh
batteries or have the power adapter plugged in properly.

* If you're not hearing any sound with other applications either, chances are
the problem isn't specific to your Maxis program. Follow the "How Can I Test
My Sound System?" instructions below for further assistance.

I'm Hearing Sound, But Why Is the Music 'Choppy' or Pausing?
Running your Maxis program directly from the CD-ROM may cause your computer to
pause occasionally while it is performing other internal tasks. CD-ROM drives
operate much slower than your hard-drive. Sound (as well as video and speed)
performance will improve by installing your Maxis program to the hard-drive, if
that option is available.

There are many different sound cards on the market today, and sound performance
will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

How Can I Test My Sound System?
Most Maxis programs utilize music (MIDI) and sound effects (Wave samples) for
your enjoyment. If music or sound effects are not playing cleanly, or if you
hear no sound at all, make sure your sound system is running properly on your
computer.

* First, check to see if your problem is solved by reading "Why Am I Not
Hearing Any Sound?" and "I'm Hearing Sound, But Why Is the Music 'Choppy' or
  Pausing?" above.

* Windows 95 uses a sound mixer control panel to set the volume of different
sound devices, like music and Wave samples. Make sure that your volume levels
are turned on and turned up.

	1. Click on the Start button.
	2. Select Programs from the menu.
	3. Select Accessories and then Multimedia from the next menus.
	4. Select Volume Control from the Multimedia menu.

This will display your sound mixer control panel. Make sure all volume controls
are about 3/4 of maximum, and that none of the Mute boxes are selected. Close
the Volume Control control panel when done.

Caution: Be aware that some speakers are amplified, and the sound may be much
louder than anticipated. You may have to fine-tune the volume levels
of your speakers (if applicable) or the sound mixer control panel to
          suit your taste.

* Make sure your sound card's software is properly installed. Follow the sound
card manufacturer's instructions to verify proper installation of the sound
  drivers in Windows 95.

* You can verify the playback of MIDI and Wave sounds on your computer, using
the Windows 95 Media Player utility. This will help determine if your
computer is having a global problem playing sound, or if it's only with your
Maxis product. If the problem is global, affecting all applications, then
contact your computer vendor or sound card manufacturer.

	1. Click on the Start button.
	2. Select Programs from the menu.
	3. Select Accessories and then Multimedia from the next menus.
	4. Select Media Player from the Multimedia menu.

Play a sample MIDI file to see if MIDI music is playing properly on your
system.

	1. Make sure Media Player is open.
	2. Click on Device in the menu bar and select MIDI Sequencer.
	3. Scroll to the end of the folders of the Open window, and
double-click on the music file Canyon.mid. This will load the sample
CANYON.MID MIDI file into Media Player.
	4. Click on the "play" button (the triangle button on the bottom-left)
to start playing CANYON.MID. You should see the position bar
scrolling along as music plays through your speakers. Pressing the
"stop" button (the square button next to the "play" button) will
           stop playing the file.

If you hear music playing through your speakers, then MIDI is working on your
system and the problem is likely specific to the Maxis program which you are
running.

* To verify that your system is playing Wave samples properly, follow the same
procedure for MIDI music above, substituting Sound instead of MIDI Sequencer
from the Device menu, and loading Chimes.wav instead of Canyon.mid from the
  Open box.

Again, if you hear the sound through your speakers, then the problem is most
likely specific to your Maxis program.

Media Player Works Fine, But I'm Still Not Getting Sound!
If you hear music and sound playing properly through your speakers while
running Media Player, but do not hear any sound from your Maxis program, then
make sure sound is turned on in the program (usually found in a Sound or
Options menu).

If you still don't have music or sound effects, then the Maxis program may not
be using MIDI or Wave samples, or still yet another issue to be addressed.
First, check the Read-Me file (icon in the Goodies folder) for additional
information. Or refer to the Quick Start Guide inside the box or CD-ROM jewel
case of your Maxis product for more information about your problem or how to
contact Maxis Customer Support for technical assistance.

I'm Still Stuck! What Do I Do?
If this document does not answer your question, and you've tried solving your
problem through your vendor or manufacturer first, then you may want to contact
Maxis Customer Support for technical assistance with your Maxis program.

Electronic Registration Notes
During the SimCopter installation process, you will be prompted to
electronically register the product. Afterwards, the install skips the
registration and takes you to the next phase of the installation.

This is not a problem, however. You may still register via the internet, modem,
fax or mail by simply clicking the 'REGISTER' button on the 'MAIN MENU'. This
way you can register whether or not you install SimCopter on your hard drive.

     INTRODUCTION
     ------------

     GREETINGS

Wanna fly a helicopter, save lives and property, enforce the law
and make some money? Maybe do this in a city you've made
yourself? If so, you've come to the right game. SimCopter makes
it easy and fun, and you won't have to learn a lot of dials or
even get government certification. You'll master the flight
controls in just a few minutes and be up and away with the push
     of a button.

     ABOUT THIS MANUAL

This manual has a tutorial and a game reference section. The
tutorial is short and sweet. It gets you flying around and
teaches you how to operate your tools. There are some exercises
at the end of the tutorial so you can practice flying, landing
     and using your tools.

The game reference section has additional details about your
tools, what to do during actual missions, how to advance, how you
get paid and spend your hard earned money. There's also the usual
     file and menu information.

This manual is also an electronic document on the SimCopter CD,
and contains any last minute changes to the game in the Appendix.
Open this e-doc by pressing F1 at anytime during the game.

     Throughout this manual:

When text looks like this, it's an instruction or something to
     do.

When text looks like this, it's an explanation or something to
     read.

When text looks like this, it's an important little tidbit to
     consider.

     TWO WAYS TO PLAY
     ----------------

There are two ways to be a SimCopter pilot. The first is to play
the Career Game. All the cities you'll need for a complete and
successful career are included in the game. These cities are
called Career Cities. In a career, you carry your equipment,
helicopters, experience and knowledge from one city to the next.
The missions and cities are linked so you can advance along a
career path to become a wealthy, master SimPilot. There are ten
levels in a Career Game and lots of different paths to take.
Early on, life is simple and the missions are easy. By the end,
you need to be a real pro to succeed.

The second way to play is to work in any SimCity 2000 city you
have, whether you built it with SimCity 2000, SimCity 2000
Network Edition, or with the SimCity Urban Renewal Kit (SCURK).
When you play this way, each city is a career island unto itself.
Missions depend on the city's design and living conditions, and
parameters you can set within SimCopter.

Whether you play with our cities or yours, you start with a
little money and work your way up to being the owner of a fleet
of helicopters. And yes, you'll be able to get out of your copter
and walk around, and even go into some of the buildings.

Just one small note: you'll only see the original graphics from
SimCity 2000, not the Future set or any set created with SCURK.

USING A JOYSTICK INSTEAD OF THE KEYBOARD
     ----------------------------------------

Joysticks work just fine with SimCopter. Throughout this manual,
keyboard controls are used for all examples, but if you're used
to a joystick, all the basic controls like turning, flying,
landing and moving the cursor on the screen should be intuitive.
Give 'em a try. If things works the way you like, that's great.
If things don't work the way you like, check out the instructions
on changing joystick settings in the game reference section.

     TUTORIAL
     --------

Welcome to Copter 101. The Tutorial Lessons will get you up and
flying in (almost) no time at all. You'll learn how to use your
controls and tools and maybe pick up a tip or three.

You can go at your own pace. You won't have the time crunch in
Tutorial City that you will have during actual missions in the
game. Fly around for as long as you want. Experiment with the
tools. When you're comfortable with flying and using your tools,
do the exercises and activities and then go on to some missions.

So if you're ready, fasten your seat belt and let's go.

FLYING LESSON - FAST AND DIRTY
     ------------------------------

Begin SimCopter as instructed in the Quick Start Guide.

This opens the SimCopter Main Menu, where you start or continue a
     Career Game or User Game.

Use your mouse or arrow keys to highlight Open User Game, and
double-click on it or hit Enter.

Using the standard Windows dialog box, go to the folder which
contains Tutorial City. If you used the default installation,
Tutorial City is in the My Saved Cities folder within the
     SimCopter Folder.

Double-click on Tutorial City to load it.

The city opens with you on a helicopter pad. Some of the
buildings of Tutorial City are in the distance. Your helicopter
is ready and waiting for you to climb aboard.

Hint: As you walk or turn, things can get between you and the
camera. Also, both you and the camera follow the contour of the
terrain. If "you" are out of camera view, either keep walking or
turn to bring yourself back into view.

Hold down the right arrow key to turn right until you are facing
     the side of a helicopter.

If you turn too far, either continue turning until you come
around again, or use the left arrow key and turn the other way.

When you are facing the side of the helicopter, press the up
arrow key to walk into the helicopter.

If you miss the doors you'll pass through the copter none the
worse for wear. Just turn around, aim for the other side of the
     helicopter and walk forward again.

As you sit down in the helicopter, your viewpoint shifts to just
behind the helicopter, looking forward. This view, with the
camera behind you, is called Third Person or "Chase" View. You
can still see some buildings of Tutorial City in the distance.
You can also see your control panel.

We'll talk about other views and the control panel in just a
moment. Right now, the most important thing... taking off!

Hold down the Q key until it looks like you could fly over the
     buildings, then let it go.

You can hear your engines rev up and see yourself lift off the
     ground.

     FLYING YOUR WHIRLYBIRD

While you're airborne, use the arrow keys (or a joystick, if you
have one) to fly your helicopter.

The default keyboard controls for flying your helicopter are:

Start and raise your helicopter Q
                           Move forward Up Arrow
                             Turn left Left Arrow
                            Turn right Right Arrow
                              Back up Down Arrow
Fly left without turning (Slide left) A
Fly right without turning (Slide right) S
Lower and land your helicopter W
                    Leave/exit your helicopter E

     Fly around for a while.

Your world "wraps around" around. The city occupies a quarter of
the world. The rest is wilderness. Pay attention to the terrain.
You'll crash into hills if you're not high enough.

Note: If you fly too high, clouds and fog will obscure your view.

You can put this flying time to good use trying some things
you'll be expected to do in the game. Hover between buildings or
try landing on a hospital, fire or police station. Note the
medics and cops on certain roofs. No room for error here.

You'll be expected to rescue Sims from run-away trains, so try
keeping up with a train as it winds through the city.

You can even fly under bridges. It's not required, but it's lots
of fun and not against city regulations... yet.

     YOUR CITY MAP

Your city map is your most important piece of equipment. It shows
you where you are, where important buildings in your city are,
     and where missions are.

There are four zoom modes, each showing a different amount of
     area and detail.

Change city map zoom modes by clicking on the "+" or the "-"
button on the city map control panel, or by pressing the "-" or
the "=" key on the keyboard.

North is always the top of the city map, and you are always in
the center. (Tutorial City has lots of bodies of water that form
blue arrows pointing North.) A yellow line extends in the
     direction your copter is facing.

HINT: Note how the yellow line on the city map pivots as you
     turn.

Here's a basic list of what your city map shows:

             Airports Purple
          Developed Areas Light gray
             Hospitals White
           Fire Stations Orange
          Police Stations Light blue
               Roads Tan
               Water Dark blue
        Open Areas in City Green
               Fire Glowing red
Wilderness Green, Light and dark brown, and White

Try all zoom modes and use the one which is the most comfortable.

When a mission occurs, a line extends from you to the mission
location. If there is more than one mission active, mission icons
will appear on the map for each additional mission.

Head for the airport to practice your navigation.

Tutorial City International Airport is at the Southeast corner of
the city. You should always locate your airport when you first
start a city. Every city has its airport in a different location.

     CHANGING YOUR VIEWPOINT

You have three views in SimCopter: Third Person (also called
"Chase"), First Person and Overhead. Third Person View lets you
see the world as though you were behind the helicopter. You've
been in the Third Person View so far.

Change your view by pressing the T key.

Now You're in First Person View, looking straight ahead from
inside the cockpit. The cross-hair on your screen is straight
     ahead.

Change your view again by pressing the T key.

Now You're in Overhead View, looking straight down from above
     your copter's tail.

The cross-hair is over the area directly beneath your copter's
     tail.

Your control panel and city map do not change as you change
     views.

Press T again to get back into Third Person View.

     Changing Camera Angles

Aim the camera to suit your personal tastes. Change to Third
Person View to see how the following commands affect your view:

                           Move Camera In.......... I
                            Move Camera Out ...... K
                            Move Camera Up........ J
                             Move Camera Down.... L
                           Aim Camera Up........... O
                            Aim Camera Down ...... P

Note: Changing the position and aim of your camera affects your
view of your water bucket and rescue harness.

     TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Your training copter is fully equipped with a water cannon in
front, and carries a water bucket, megaphone, rescue harness, and
tear gas canisters. These tools help you complete missions and
earn big bucks and points. You must buy them during your career,
     but for training they're free.

You can use your tools by clicking your mouse or joystick cursor
on a tool button, or with keyboard commands. The default keyboard
     commands are:

                   Shoot Water Cannon.......... Spacebar

                   Lower Water Bucket.......... V

                  Raise Water Bucket............ C

                     Dump Water from Bucket... B

                   Lower Rescue Harness........ G

                   Raise Rescue Harness......... F

All tools work in all views, but it's easier to use some tools in
     certain view modes.

Note: The bucket must be lowered to dump water. If you're out of
water, you can't use the bucket or the water cannon.

     RECEIVING DISPATCHES

Your radio is your source for dispatches, in addition to music
and entertainment. All missions (except the speeder) begin with a
radio dispatch to you. You're told what the problem is and its
location in the city. Additional information in the dispatch may
     or may not be helpful.

When dispatchers describe a location, they do it by "area." All
cities are divided into nine areas. Outside of the city,
wilderness is divided into four areas.

     Your Spotlight and Sending Dispatches

You use your spotlight primarily to dispatch police cars, fire
trucks or ambulances. You can dispatch these vehicles at any time
by pressing their assigned function key. Let's dispatch a police
     car.

Aim your spotlight at the area where you want a police car to go.
Your spotlight points forward and toward the ground.

You can aim your spotlight by pointing your helicopter. For
additional control, use the joystick on the control panel. Grab
the spotlight controller with your cursor.

To Dispatch a Fire Truck Press F2

To Dispatch an Ambulance Press F3

                       To Dispatch Police Press F4

Press the key for the vehicle you want to dispatch, in this case
the F4 key for a police car.

A dispatch pylon marks your dispatch. The nearest available
vehicle you requested will be sent to the pylon. You can see it
on your city map when it's "in range."

Emergency vehicles can only travel on roads, so you can't make
them go into the wilderness or into a city area that has no
roads. You'll get a message if a vehicle you requested cannot be
     dispatched.

When emergency personnel arrive, they perform their duties
automatically. When they are done, or if they find nothing to do,
they eventually remove the pylon and return to their base. You
can also "clear" a dispatch and free up the vehicle yourself. Aim
your spotlight at the pylon you want to clear and press the
     proper key:

To clear a Fire Truck dispatch Press Shift F2

To clear an Ambulance dispatch Press Shift F3

To clear a Police dispatch Press Shift F4

There nothing for your Police car to do here, so you can send it
     on its way.

Aim your spotlight at the police dispatch pylon and press Shift
F4 to release the police car.

HINT: Each fire station in a city can supply one fire truck. Each
city hospital can contribute one ambulance, and each police
station provides one police car. You can have a maximum of ten of
each type of emergency service vehicle, regardless of how many
     emergency service buildings you have.

     SPECIAL DISPATCH

F5 issues a special dispatch that allows police to follow your
spotlight. Use this dispatch to help catch a criminal you are
chasing who won't stop. Cancel the "Chase dispatch by pressing
     Shift F5.

     A CRASH COURSE

No matter how careful you are, you're going to bump into
buildings, power lines, buildings, water, more buildings, land
and occasionally buildings. Fire and smoke can also damage your
copter. Even simple flying produces wear and tear.

As your copter takes damage, it sputters and smokes and becomes
difficult to control. Your damage indicator lights go from "off"
to yellow to red. When all five are red, your copter is nearly
destroyed. One or two more crashes and you lose your helicopter
and all the equipment it carries. Sorry. At least when that
happens you are returned to your hangar, embarrassed, perhaps,
     but otherwise unharmed.

Note: If you lose your copter and don't have enough money to buy
a new one, you've lost the game. You'll have to start over again.

You've probably crashed your copter at least once already, but if
     you haven't, do it now.

Aim for a building, close your eyes, and fly into it.

Repeat as necessary until the helicopter is destroyed.

     That was fun, wasn't it?

Get into another helicopter, fly around a little, then continue
     with the lesson.

     BRING IT ON HOME

It takes no great skill to crash, but it takes finesse to land
properly. Part of your training is learning how to land, and now
is as good a time to learn as any.

Fly your helicopter to your airport landing pad and hover about a
     thousand feet over the tarmac.

Remember, Tutorial City Airport is outside the southeast corner
     of the city.

When you are over the tarmac, press W for just a second or two.

You must ease yourself to the ground. If you land too quickly,
     you'll crash.

Press W again for a second or two.

Note that you continue to drift a little bit even after you
     release the W key.

Ease your copter to the ground until you hear a soft woosh as
     your engines rev down.

Press E to leave your helicopter.

There, that wasn't so bad. Walk around a little and stretch your
legs. Check out the hangar, as long as you're here.

HINT: If the townsfolk you encounter seem only mildly interested
in you, it's because they know your time with them is most likely
     temporary.

     THE HANGAR IN GENERAL

The hangar is your base for buying helicopters and equipment, and
for getting promotions. Get to know and love your hangar.

In any city, you have one assigned hangar: the one where you
begin. You can land at other hangars, but you won't be able to
perform any activities in them. Walk into your hangar by pressing
Ctrl-H while you are on the tarmac near your hanger.

Note: If the city you load has no airport, one is automatically
built at the southeast corner of the city.

     MAINTENANCE

Engines need fueling, damage needs repairing, windshields need
cleaning and rotorheads need checking. All this happens when you
land, exit your copter, then get back in. Bring your copter back
to the ground every now and then and let the mechanics work their
magic. Buy only what you need.

Note: You can get maintenance for your copter anywhere, but the
farther you are from your hangar, the higher the cost of
maintenance. Bob's Gas Delivery ain't cheap.

If you run out of gas while flying, use the Auto-Rotation
maneuver or you'll crash big time. There's an Auto-Rotation
exercise at the end of this lesson.

     CATALOG

You must be in the hangar to buy equipment and copters from the
Catalog. Press Ctrl-C or click on the Catalog button to open the
     Catalog.

Prices for equipment and copters are as posted. No negotiation is
necessary, and no sales tax is added.

Any equipment you buy fits on any copter you own, and is
automatically installed on whichever copter you choose to fly.

Click on the equipment or copter you want, then click "buy."

If you can afford it, it's yours.

To close the catalog, click on the "Done" button.

     LOGBOOK

The Logbook records the missions you have completed. You must be
in the hangar to open the Logbook. You can press Ctrl-M, or click
     on the Logbook button.

     SUMMARY

Now you can take off, fly, dispatch, use your tools and land. You
can jump into the missions if you want and try your hand at
saving lives and property, or you can play it safe and do the
     following exercises.

     EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIES
     ------------------------

This section has exercises and activities to get you familiar
with your copter and to give you a working knowledge of tools and
     missions.

This section is optional, but it would be nice to go through it
at least once. Sims expect their pilots to be proficient. you'll
be guided through some actual activities required by the
missions. The only difference between these activities and the
game missions themselves is that you won't be timed during these
activities. After you do the exercises, you'll have a working
knowledge of your spotlight, megaphone, rescue harness, water
     bucket and water canon.

SimVolunteers have generously donated their time and energy to
aid you in your training. No expense has been spared in the
construction of this practice city, and no Sims were injured
during the performance of these exercises.

When you're ready, get into a helicopter, start it up, and fly
     toward the city.

GET DOWN! THE TUTORIAL CITY LANDING EXERCISE

     Landing on the ground

It's not the fall that gets you, it's the sudden stop. Sure it's
an old joke, but it's still true. You'll need to land in a tight
space lots of times, so practice now. The SimCopter Tutorial City
Landing Practice area along the eastern edge of the city has a
variety of target sizes surrounded by roads and buildings. The
exercise is simple-choose a flat empty area and land in it. Watch
     out for any trees.

Here are the basic steps for efficient, safe landing:

Approach the area you want to land using the Third Person View.

Change to the Overhead View as you pass over your target.

Stop your forward motion and turn a few times with your right or
left arrow key to reduce forward momentum.

Use your cross-hairs to "spot" your target area as you descend.

"Slide" left with the A key or right with the S key to correct as
     necessary.

Change views frequently to see how you're doing.

Descend slowly until you touch down.

You can't land "all at once." You must descend little by little,
or you'll hit the ground and take damage.

You'll land where the cross-hairs are aimed.

HINT: There's plenty of room to land in parks and other large
flat areas. Trees will interfere with you, and landing on a
     hillside almost assures damage.

     Landing on a roof

Missions often begin by getting a medic from a hospital roof, or
a cop from a police roof, and end by taking injured Sims to a
hospital roof. To land on a roof, you must score a bull's-eye
     when seconds count.

Near the Landing Practice Area are more emergency service
buildings than you can shake a stick at. Use these buildings to
practice touch and go landing. Fly from one roof to another.
     Sound easy?

Note: Whenever you land on a hospital or a police roof, a medic
or cop will approach your copter and become a passenger, unless
you already have one. If you don't want a medic or a cop, take
off before he or she gets into your copter.

At some point during this exercise, when you land on a roof,
leave your helicopter and walk to the edge.

     AUTO-ROTATION EXERCISE

When landing on roof tops becomes routine, it's time to practice
auto-rotation. This is a specialized type of landing for when you
run out of gas. No pilot can claim to be a true professional
     without having auto-rotation down pat.

Fly around until you run out of gas.

When you run out of gas, your copter will begin to fall to the
     ground.

As you are falling, maneuver your copter as though you were
     flying toward the ground.

When you aim your helicopter toward the ground while falling, you
use gravity and air to keep your rotor blades turning. This
     actually slows you down.

Just before you hit the ground, maneuver your copter as though
     you want to fly backwards.

     This is called flaring up.

If your timing is correct, you'll hit the ground with less of a
crash than if you just dropped. Bob's Gas Delivery service will
make an appearance, and supply you with enough gas and
maintenance to get you going. It's expensive and tricky, but your
copter will live to fly another day.

In SimCopter, you can only practice this maneuver if you have run
     out of gas.

WATER USE AND FIRE FIGHTING EXERCISE

Fires happen for lots of reasons: rioters, arsonists, plane
crashes... it's a wonder there are any cities left. You must
become familiar with your bucket and water cannon. This exercise
gives you a chance to practice getting a water supply and using
     it on a fire.

Fly to one of Tutorial City's many water areas.

When you're over the water, change to Third Person View, then
     lower your water bucket.

Your Third Person View follows your bucket as it lowers.

Note: You can't fill or use your water bucket if it's completely
     inside your helicopter.

If necessary, descend until you hear the bucket splash in the
     water.

Be careful, or you'll crash in the water.

The bucket fills automatically when it hits the water.

Keep your bucket in the water until the gauge reads full.

     Raise your helicopter a little.

Dump the water from your bucket with the B key.

Water dumps from the bucket for as long as you hold the "B" key
or the Dump Water button, or until you're out of water, so keep
an eye on your water gauge.

Fill your water bucket again, raise your helicopter a little,
then press the spacebar to shoot a stream of water.

Notice that you are pushed backwards when you use the water
cannon. To counter this, you must fly forward at the same time
you use the water cannon. Practice makes perfect.

Speaking of practice, this might be a good time to try your hand
at dousing an actual fire. To do that, we'll have to start one.

     Press the Escape key.

     This opens the Settings panel.

We'll talk more about this panel in the reference section. For
now, click on the City Settings button to open the Settings
     screen.

Use the sliders on the Settings screen to set the number and
     difficulty of various missions.

Note: To prevent complications during a practice session, make
sure only the mission you are practicing has its slider raised,
with all the other mission sliders set at the bottom.

Set the number of fires to about a half of the way up, and set
the difficulty to low (near the bottom).

Click OK to close the Settings screen.

In a short while, a fire will start. You'll hear the dispatch and
see a line on the city map from your location to the location of
the fire. If there is more than one fire at a time, icons will
show additional locations. Fires are randomly set, so yours might
be anywhere, even where there are no buildings.

When you arrive at the fire, dispatch a fire truck to a nearby
     road with the F2 key.

You may not need the fire truck, but it's good to have one there
     just in case.

Use the bucket and water cannon skills you have developed to
     douse the fire.

Dump water on the fire from overhead. Shoot water right at it. As
long as it's burning, you can't put too much water on it. If you
run out of water, you'll need to get more.

When the fire goes out, you'll hear a hiss and the sweet sound of
     you being paid. That's it.

HINT: You must be at the proper altitude for a water drop to be
effective on a fire. If you're too high, the water evaporates
before it hits the fire. If you're too low, your propeller
accelerates the fire and you can take damage. Hot air rising from
a fire can also make control difficult. If you hear a popping
sound, you are too close to the fire and are taking damage.

     RESCUE EXERCISE

During your career, you'll rescue Sims from overturned boats,
burning buildings and runaway trains. In this exercise, we'll
rescue a few Sims from a fishing trip gone bad.

Open the Settings panel as before, by pressing the Escape key and
     selecting City Settings.

Set the difficulty and number of rescue missions to suit your
     level of confidence.

     Close the panels.

In a few moments, you'll receive a dispatch that Sims are in
trouble and need your help. A line appears on your city map,
showing you the location of the accident. Icons show additional
     rescue missions.

You can fly directly to the scene, or you can land on a hospital
roof along the way and pick up a medic. Even though a medic
occupies a seat in your helicopter (which could otherwise hold a
rescue victim), you can't know in advance how extensive injuries
are. A medic can prevent injuries from becoming worse, and is
usually worth the time and expense.

For this exercise, when you arrive at the rescue area you should
dispatch an ambulance to the area.

Aim your spotlight at a nearby road square and press F3.

Note: Remember, emergency vehicles can only travel on roads.

Search the area until you find the Sims in need.

When you find them, change to Third Person View and lower your
     rescue harness.

Note: In Third Person View, the camera follows the rescue
     harness.

Maneuver your helicopter so the hapless Sims can grab the
     harness.

Notes: Over water, the wind from your helicopter blades can push
the boat away, which make things difficult for you and the Sims.

Sims automatically grab the harness when it's close enough. The
harness holds one Sim at a time.

Bring the Sim into your helicopter by raising the harness, then
lower it again if there are other Sims to rescue.

The Sim automatically becomes a passenger.

Repeat until there are no more Sims to rescue, or until your
     helicopter is full.

You must now take your Sims to a place of safety:

Take injured Sim to a hospital roof for full payment.

Take healthy Sims to any place in the city for full payment

Sims leave your copter when you land.

After taking rescued Sims to a place of safety, return to the
site for Sims who were left behind, and take them to a safe
place. Repeat the rescue process until there are no more Sims to
     rescue.

When you're done, take the medic back to a hospital roof. It
doesn't have to be the same hospital where you got him or her,
     but it would be nice.

     RIOT ACTIVITY

Left unchecked, riots will cause traffic jams, fires and medical
evacuations. You'll want police and fire trucks to help you.

Open the Settings screen and increase the riot mission number.

By the time you hear about it, a riot is already well developed.

When you receive a riot dispatch, fly toward the trouble area.

On the way, stop by a hospital roof and pick up a medic.

Rioters hurt themselves and innocent Sims, either deliberately or
     by accident.

When you arrive on the scene, dispatch police and fire trucks at
strategic locations. It doesn't take many Sims to cause problems.

Police and fire trucks help contain and diffuse the rioters.

Use the proper message from your megaphone to discourage
additional people from joining the riot.

For this exercise, use a Disperse message. The message have the
     greatest effect within your spotlight.

Small groups at the fringe are less committed than people near
the center. Still, a few people may ignore your warnings.

Use your water cannon on larger groups of people near the center.

Your water cannon breaks large groups into smaller groups. The
smaller groups will have second thoughts about continuing to
riot, and are more easily discouraged by your megaphone. There is
a slight chance they may also become more angry and violent.

Use tear gas as a last resort on those rioters who are still
     active.

Tear gas will immobilize large groups for a while, but it can
     cause panic and injury.

Police diffuse a riot when it is small enough. You job, however,
     is not yet over.

Clean up those problems the riot has caused.

Traffic jams, fires and medical evacuations still require your
services after the rioters have left.

MISSIONS, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT THEM
     ------------------------------------------

This reference section has the details you'll need to complete
missions, and make lots of SimDollars.

There are eight missions in SimCopter. Each mission reflects the
trials of a dynamic city and has activities which you must
complete within a certain time. You are responsible for a mission
as soon as you receive its dispatch. More than one mission can
     happen at a time.

You receive the full SimDollar bonus and all of the points only
     when you complete a mission.

Some missions provide partial bonuses and points for certain
     actions during missions.

You collect a salary for your flying time whether or not you
complete any missions. You don't lose money for not completing a
mission, but you are charged for picking up a medic or cop,
dispatching emergency vehicles, using gas, maintenance and
     various other nominal expenses.

     SPEEDER

Every city has at least one speeder at all times. Speeders drive
down the middle of roads and are faster than other cars and you
can hear their tires squeal. You do not receive a dispatch
message for speeders. You must find them during your normal
patrol duties (unless a police car finds one for you).

Shine your spotlight on the speeder and use an appropriate
megaphone message to order the scalawag to the side of the road.
This will automatically dispatch the nearest police car to your
area. A speeder will usually pull over. To receive full payment
for catching a speeder, you must keep the speeder in your
spotlight until the police arrive. If you fly off before the
police arrive, the speeder will drive away almost immediately. No
     bonus or points for you.

     TRAFFIC JAMS

Traffic jams happen when something -- anything -- blocks a busy
     intersection.

You'll receive a dispatch message, and a line on your city map
extends from you to the traffic jam. A traffic jam icon will
appear on your city map for each additional traffic problem.

Use your spotlight and megaphone to re-route traffic from
     intersections near the jam.

You should also dispatch police to help clear the traffic jam.
Police "unjam" traffic by being near it. The jam is considered
     cleared when traffic flows freely.

If the traffic jam is caused by burning debris, you must put out
the fire, after which the debris disappears. Even after debris is
cleared, cars may still be jammed and need messages to become
     "free."

You receive your bonus payment and points if the jam is cleared
     within a certain time.

     FIRE

Fires happen for lots of reasons, from careless smokers to
     airplane crashes.

You'll receive a dispatch message, and a line on your city map
extends from you to the fire. A fire icon will appear on your
city map for each additional fire.

You must put the fire out with your water bucket or water cannon
to receive full bonus points. The larger a fire is when it
starts, the more money and points you earn when you put it out.

A fire that starts small and spreads will not earn you more
money, but you will lose points and it will take more work to put
     out.

Fires can cause many additional missions. Dispatch emergency
vehicles as may be necessary, but be frugal. You'll be charged
for emergency vehicles you dispatch whether or not they are
actually needed. If fire trucks do all of the work, you'll
receive a partial bonus and points.

If you do nothing, the fire will eventually burn itself out, but
you'll receive no bonus or points. If the fire spreads while you
do nothing, you will lose points.

     RESCUE

Sims are subject to overturned boats, burning buildings and
runaway trains -- things you wouldn't even wish on a Congressman.

A line on your city map extends from you to the Sims in need, and
you'll receive a dispatch message. A rescue icon will appear on
your city map for each additional rescue.

Use your harness to rescue Sims and bring them into your
helicopter, then fly them to a place of safety. Only one Sim at a
     time can use your harness.

Your bonus and points are awarded on a "per Sim" basis. Where you
must take Sims for payment depends on their injuries:

Injured Sims must be taken to a hospital roof for full
     bonus and points.

Healthy Sims can be taken to any safe area in the city for
     full payment.

When you land, healthy sims, cops and medics will automatically
leave your copter. Use your cursor to drag injured Sims from your
     helicopter.

There is a chance that injuries can worsen with time, and Sims
can eventually die. A medic will slow but not prevent this
     deterioration.

To get a medic, land on the roof of any hospital. Medics charge a
nominal fee when they enter your helicopter. You need not return
the medic to the hospital where you got him or her. If you don't
want a medic, leave the roof before the medic enters your copter.

If you were too slow and someone got on, you can drag them from
your copter before you take off.

     MEDICAL EVACUATION

Lots of things cause a need for medical evacuations, from home
and industrial accidents to food poisoning at a Bed and
Breakfast. Whatever the cause, there's no time to lose.

A line on your city map extends from you to the emergency, and
you receive a dispatch message. Any additional medical
evacuations will produce icons on your city map.

Medical evacuation almost always implies severe injury. A medic
can help you save lives. Acquire a medic from the roof of any
     hospital.

Whether or not you are carrying a medic, you must fly to the
medical evacuation site and land. If you have a medic, he or she
will then walk to the victims. Otherwise you must get out and
     carry the injured Sims yourself.

You and the medic will automatically pick up an injured Sim when
you're next to one. Only one Sim can be carried at a time.

You must take injured Sims to a hospital roof to receive bonus
and points. You are paid on a "per Sim" basis. You are penalized
     if a Sim dies.

You can leave any medics behind, or be a real sport and return
     them to a hospital roof.

     CRIMINAL

Even Sims have their bad apples. The malefactors of SimCopter are
an unsavory lot who prey on the weak, the unsuspecting and the
     infirm.

A line on your city map extends from you to the scene of the
crime, and you receive a dispatch message. Additional criminals
produce criminal icons on your city map.

Criminals include thieves, muggers and such, who may cause
medical evacuation missions, and arsonists who often cause fire
missions. Frequently, you may see only the result of criminal
action. Criminals stake out specific territories to ply their
tawdry trades, and continue their crimes until caught. Diligent
patrolling with a medic and cop can be effective.

If you spot criminals while they are on foot, dispatch police to
nearby roads to trap your quarry. A cop, if you have one, will
spring into action when you land, so plan carefully.

If the criminal is leaving the scene as you arrive, keep your
spotlight on the speeding car. Try ordering the crook to the side
of the road (some criminals are very stupid). Alert police to
follow your spotlight with the F5 key. The tighter your spotlight
is on the criminal's car, the slower the car travels. You might
even second guess the escape route and fly ahead to dispatch
police to key positions. They'll wait on stake out for a little
     while.

On foot or in a car, a criminal makes a U-turn when it sees a cop
up ahead. When criminals are blocked, they may surrender, flee as
best they can, or shoot it out. Leave this part of the action to
the pros. When the police actually capture the criminal, you get
     your bonus and points.

     TRANSPORT

Important people have no time or patience for street level
traffic and often hire you to take them above the fray.

A red line on your city map extends from you to the place where
the request is being made and you receive a dispatch message.
Additional transport missions produce transport icons which
     appear on your city map.

If you arrive in time, VIPs will enter your copter. If you don't
arrive in time someone else gets the assignment.

The delivery location is shown by a white line on your city map.
You must take the person to the marked location within a certain
time. VIPs are not interested in problems your Sims may have. If
you allow another mission to divert you and make you late, you do
not get your bonus, you can lose points, and don't expect a tip.

     RIOT

Sims riot for many reasons. Property is put at risk by fires, and
injuries can abound. Traffic can become a mess if the riot goes
     on for too long.

A line on your city map extends from you to the riot. Additional
riots will show as icons on your city map.

By the time you arrive, the riot has already developed. Rioters
are always on the street, throwing debris and causing mischief.
There can be several dozen of them.

To receive full bonus and points, you must use your megaphone and
spotlight first, then your water, and then your tear gas. If you
use your tools out of this order, you may end the riot quickly,
     but you will lose points.

Your spotlight and megaphone can discourage new rioters on the
fringe and break up small groups. Your bucket or water cannon
will discourage and break up larger groups closer to the center.
Use tear gas to immobilize the largest groups at the center of
     the riot.

Strategically placed police and fire trucks can contain and
diffuse the riot, and ambulances can help treat injuries. When
rioters leave the area, they cease to riot. When enough of them
     leave, the riot is over.

You receive incremental bonuses and points as you diffuse the
riot. When the riot is over, take care of any secondary missions
that the riot may have caused.

     STUFF ON YOUR DASHBOARD
     -----------------------

A fully equipped copter has lots of tools and equipment.

     DASHBOARD ITEMS

     Money (top) and points (bottom)

     Fuel gauge

     Altimeter

     RADIO

Your radio comes with several stations. Change stations by
     clicking the frequency indicator.

Check out the Odds and Ends section to learn about adding your
     own radio stations.

     COMPASS

The Compass indicates your current direction relative to
Geophysical SimNorth as defined by various international
agencies, treaties and all other such hoopla.

     SPOTLIGHT JOYSTICK

Grab this with your cursor to aim your spotlight without turning
     your copter, or use Ctrl-1, Ctrl-2, Ctrl-3, or Ctrl-4.

     SPOTLIGHT

Aim your spotlight where you want your megaphone to be heard, or
where you want emergency vehicles to go. Keep your spotlight on
speeders and criminals to track them. The higher your elevation,
the more ground your spotlight covers but the less effective it
is when tracking criminals. Your spotlight is never turned off.

     CITY MAP OVERVIEW

Here's a basic list of what your city map shows:

      Airports Purple

      Developed Areas Light gray

      Hospitals White

      Fire Stations Orange

      Police Stations Light blue

      Roads Tan

      Water Dark blue

      Open Areas in City Green

      Fire Glowing red

      Wilderness Green, brown, white

Mission icons appear on your city map when there is more than one
of any particular mission. Dispatched emergency vehicles also
     show up on your map.

     TOOLS

There are five tools that you can buy from the catalog. Each tool
has its own control panel, and is automatically installed in your
helicopter when you buy the tool. When you sell a tool, the
control flap is removed from the cockpit.

You can only buy what you can afford. There are no business loans
     in SimCopter.

     Water Bucket and Cannon

The water bucket (also called a "Bambi Bucket") can be filled or
dumped only when lowered to some degree. When fully lowered, it
is about fifty feet below you. It shares its water with your
     water cannon.

A full water bucket makes taking off more difficult and makes you
descend more quickly when landing. When the bucket is lowered it
     makes flight control more difficult.

The bucket and cannon must be purchased separately. Water buckets
are a standard size, but larger copters can carry more water.
Bucket must be purchased first. Cable and winch included.

     Rescue Harness

Lower your rescue harness to Sims in distress, and snatch them
from the jaws of death. When fully lowered, the harness is about
     fifty feet below you.

Sims automatically grab the harness when it is close enough to
them, and hang on while you lift them into your copter. They
never fall off. Only one Sim at a time will fit on the harness,
no matter how desperate the situation.

The rescue harness is fireproof, non-conductive, and comes in one
     color only.

     Megaphone

The megaphone broadcasts your instructions to the area
illuminated by your spotlight. Use it to clear traffic jams, pull
over speeders and diffuse riots. Click on the button to open a
menu of message types, and click on the type you want in order to
send a message or press a key for the same results. The following
is a guideline for message types and the situations they work
     with:

      Report Traffic Traffic Jam F6
Stop Criminal Criminal & Speeder F7
      Evacuate Evacuate an area F8
      Disperse Riot F9
Greet Try it and see F10

Results can vary. Sims generally do as requested, but some may
try to "beat the odds." Good luck.

     Tear Gas Launcher

The tear gas launcher holds ten canisters of tear gas. Its
primary use is for riots, but it can be effective against
     criminals on foot.

When you are out of tear gas, you'll get replacements during
     normal maintenance.

Warning: Improper use of tear gas violates Federal, State and
Local laws, and results in severe point loss.

     Passenger Seats

Each helicopter has a fixed number of seats. Each passenger takes
a full seat. Click the upper right corner of the seating area to
     see who's sitting where.

Adding seats to helicopters is a violation of Federal regulations.
The only way to get more seats is to buy a bigger helicopter.

     MENUS AND GAME SETTINGS
     -----------------------

SimCopter has the usual suspects of menus and game setting
     options.

     Main Menu

The Main Menu has items to begin, continue or end a game.

     New Career Game

Select this to begin a new career. You'll choose one of three
cities. When you choose your city, you'll be treated to a
fly-through of that city. When the fly-though is over, you're at
your helicopter pad, ready to go.

     Open Career Game

Select this to continue a career you started and saved earlier.
You'll pick up where you were when you saved it, with your Sims
unaware of any lapse in time.

     New User Game

Select this to open a standard dialog box so you can load any
city from SimCity 2000, SimCity 2000 Network Edition or SimCity
Urban Renewal Kit. You'll begin at the city's airport. If the
city has no airport, one will be built just outside the southeast
corner of the city. Perform services and daring-do, earn money
and become a local hero. Sorry, no fly-throughs for User Cities.

     Open User Game

Select this to continue with a User City you started and saved
     earlier.

     Quit

Select this to close the Main Menu panel and exit SimCopter.
Handy when the boss walks by.

     Settings Panel

Press Escape at any time during the game to open the Settings
panel. From here you can tweak city and game aspects.

     City Settings

City settings increase or decrease the number of missions and
     their difficulty.

Note: City settings are available only with User Cities and
Tutorial City, not with Career Cities.

     Graphics

Graphics settings let you change ambiance and flavor of how
     things look.

Note: Turning off textures, using lower resolution and moving the
     fog closer can improve performance.

     Sound

The Sound panel gives you control of the sound and music.

Note: You can't turn off your dispatch radio, but you can turn
the volume down so you can't hear it.

     Controls

This screen shows the complete list of assigned keyboard and
joystick commands. Change them to suit your tastes.

     Changing Commands for Keyboards

     1. Scroll through the list to the command you wish to change,
then click on that command. Any keys currently assigned to that
command are shown in green on the on-screen keyboard. Keys
assigned to other commands are red. Unassigned keys are white.
The gray keys are reserved (you can't use them).

     2. To assign a command, click on an unassigned key. To remove an
assignment, click on the green key for that command.

Note: You can have multiple keys assigned to one command.

     Changing Commands for Joysticks

Make sure you have installed any driver that may have come with
your joystick, and that you have calibrated your joystick using
the Joystick settings on your Windows 95 Control Panel.

Your joystick may not have or use all the buttons on the joystick
graphic. To see which buttons your joystick uses, note the
graphic as you operate each of your joystick's buttons. If a
single button on the graphic "depresses" when you use a button,
that button can be assigned a command. If no buttons on the
graphic depress, or if more than one button depresses, that
button on your joystick cannot be assigned a command.

Commands can only be assigned command to buttons which do not
have a command assignment. Buttons that have assignments are red
in the graphic. To assign a command to a button which already has
a command, you must first remove the command assigned from that
     button.

     1. Click on each command in the list of commands. When a button
in the graphic changes to green, it means that button has been
     assigned that command.

2 Click the mouse cursor on the green button to "unassign" that
     command.

     3. Scroll through the list of commands to find the command you
want assigned to that button. Click on that command to highlight
     it.

     4. Click on the button in the graphic that you want the command
assigned to. The button will turn green. The highlighted command
is now assigned to that button.

Commands which are not assigned to a joystick button can still be
accessed from your keyboard. No matter how you configure your
joystick, you may still need the mouse cursor.

     Save Game

Saves your game (Career or User City) under its current name and
location. The first time you save a game, a standard dialog box
lets you give it a name and location.

     Save Game As

Opens a standard dialog box so you can change the name or
location of your current game (either Career or User City).

     Leave City

Closes the Settings panel and opens the Main Menu.

     Continue

Closes the Settings panel and returns you to flying duties.

     CAREER GAME PROMOTIONS
     ----------------------

When you complete a city, you'll have the choice of going to
another city at the same level or to a city at the next level.
The number of points you need to advance stays the same as you
advance. The points are more difficult to get at higher levels.

You'll get a fly-through every time you pick a new Career City.
Hit the Escape key to bypass the fly-through and get right to
     work.

You can change the complexion and flavor of a User City by
loading it into SimCity 2000 or SCURK, rotating it 90, 180 or 270
degrees, then saving it. SimCopter will assign North to a
     different side of the city.

Damage done to buildings in a User City in SimCopter will still
be there when that city is loaded back into SimCity 2000.

     Adding Your Own Radio Station

Here's how to create and add your own radio station.

Place your favorite tunes in a folder called MUSIC. These tunes
     must be .WAV files.

Place this MUSIC folder into a folder which has a "station" name
that you have given to it.

Place your Station folder into the folder named "Stations" which
is in the Radio folder, which in turn is in the SimCopter sound
     folder.

     Day and Night

Patrolling a city at night has some rewards. City skylines take
on a singular beauty, and fires can really light up a sky. Toggle
the day and night views with Control-D for a whole different look
     at things.

     Sharing the Skies

The skies over most cities are busy. You share the skies with
other aircraft. In the last city, there's a... well, we're not
exactly sure what it is. Not to worry. There's plenty of room for
     all of you.

Unfortunately, other aircraft tend to crash and start fires.

     Cheat Codes

What? Cheat codes in SimCopter? Press CTRL-ALT-X to open a dialog
box. Enter "Gas does grow on trees". Any others? You bet. Will
you read about them here? No way.

     Want More User Cities?

You can find a plethora of cities to fly in. People all over the
world have created cities. Some of them are on the Maxis web
site. Check them out. The address is:

     http://www. maxis.com/the_store/creations-simcity2000.html

You can even fly in SimCity Classic cities. Load a SimCity
Classic city into SimCity 2000, then save it as a SimCity 2000
city. Now you can load it as a SimCopter User City.

     OOPS
     ----

The manual was 100% perfect when it was sent to the printer's,
but a group of gremlins got hold of it on the way and performed
dasterdly deeds to the text. Even worser, their cousins tinkered
with the program code. As a result, there are a few discrepencies
between what the manual says and how the game works. Nothing
     egregious, but certainly worth mentioning:

     1. The manual states that your helicopters can get fuel and
maintenance anywhere within the particular world you are flying
in. This is not true. Fuel you can get anywhere, but you must
return to your assigned hangar for repairs.

     2. Control-M no longer toggles the radio on and off.

     3. To send a greeting to your Sims, use F10, not F0.

     4. An overturned boat is likely to drift. This means that when
you arrive at a boat rescue site, you may have to search for the
     victims.

     5. If your game appears to be "chunking" and your helicopter
seems difficult to control, here are a few ways to make it run
     smoother, with much better response:

Bring in the fog closer to your view. You can do this
from the graphics control panel with the fog slider, or
you can move the fog in with the CTRL-K key combination
or out with the CTRL-L key combination.

If your game is still slower than you would like, turn
off the ground textures (wavy water, green house lawns
and the like). Again, you can do this at the graphics
control panel, or you can turn it off with the CTRL-G
          key combination.

You can also make a big improvement by turning off the
building textures. This is all the windows and
brick-like appearance that wraps the buildings. Visit
your graphics control panel or use the CTRL-O key
          combination.

None of these changes will affect the way you play the
          game.

     HELICOPTER MYTHS
     ----------------

Helicopter Myth 1: If the engine quits, you're a goner.

Helicopter Myth 2: A flight in a helicopter is always bumpier
than a flight in an airplane.

Helicopter Myth 3: Helicopters are too fragile to fly in strong
     winds.

Helicopter Myth 4: Helicopters need two engines, one for the top
propeller and one for the rear propeller.

ENJOY!
