It all started out innocently enough. I began my adventure by germinating some seeds from a Jalapeno I dried from the bush in my back yard. A friend bought me the Jalapeno seedling as a house-warming pressie, I planted it, and enjoyed the fruits for two seasons. Seven plants have emerged from the experiment, and along with this, I raised two plants from thirty seeds I bought through the post here in Melbourne. Winter's vengeance has now passed and spring has come. My house is now crowded out with plants of varies shapes and sizes. To date, I have over 236 little guys making their mark on the world. Check out my tips page, or worse still, my Diary, for more info, or my links page for some great sites. |
| The photo on the left is of my little girl Olivia being subjected to the normal proud-parents' photo shoot. She bore the exercise with mild gravity and in nearly every shot, happily displayed her new-found ability to protrude her tongue. Much to the consternation of the photographer who had intended to use the shoot to set up a display in her shop window. (Oh well) Least to say, she didn't in the end. Above is a photo of her when she was two days old in which I placed a variety of chillies into her crib while her mom was asleep. I even put one in each tiny hand. (Not very hot ones) I didn't even get in trouble when the photos came back. Needless to say, that when my girl was one year old, she finally had a taste of real chilli. The story goes as follows. My wife had just finished preparing a wonderful Thai chicken in which a finely chopped habanero had been garnished over the top. Well, as Olivia can now walk and likes to reach up to grab whatever she can... My wife spotted her and knew instantly by her watering eyes and the now discarded fork at her feet what must have transpired while our backs were turned. Thankfully she didn't eat any of the chilli, but simply had got a taste from the fork. Boy did she gulp that milk down. Mother and daughter are quite fine in case you wondered. Dad had a secret chuckle. (Guess who's going to be dad's helper in his new chilli garden?) |
