"DOCINHOS"
|
| Here are a few of my
favourite sweets..... BRIGADEIROS ("BRIGADIERS") 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 stick of butter 2 heaping tbsp of Nestle Quick, or 1 tbsp of Quick and 1 tbsp of Hershey's Cocoa In a heavy saucepan, mix chocolate with condensed milk and add the margarine. Cook in low heat stirring constantly until you can see the bottom of the pan. Continue to stir for another two minutes. Pour onto a plate and let cool completely before you form the little balls. Butter your hands slightly to form the little balls. Roll the balls in chocolate sprinkles and put them in small decorative paper cups.
OLHOS DE SOGRA ("MOTHER-IN-LAW'S
EYES")
Here's an example of the Brazilian sense of humour! If you look at these "docinhos", they really DO resemble a pair of eyes staring at you! In Brazil, "olhos de sogra" and "brigadeiros" are some of the most popular little sweets served at parties. 24 oz. of large pitted prunes 1 lb grated coconut 1/2 lb of sugar 2 egg yolks 1/2 cup of water whole cloves Choose only the moist prunes and form them into boat shapes (cut a slit in center). Prepare the filling: melt the sugar in the water in a saucepan on low heat, then add the coconut and the egg yolks. Mix well and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring form time to time with a wooden spoon. Stuff the prunes with the coconut sweet while it's still warm and stick a clove in the center of each "docinho" to form the pupil of the eye. Serve in small paper cups. Don't forget you're not supposed to eat the clove!
DOCE DE LEITE
("SWEET MILK")
All you need is a can of sweetened condensed milk! Remove label from can. Put it in a large pan with 4 quarts of water. Bring the water to a boil and simmer at low heat for 2 hours. Remove can from pan and let cool. Refrigerate for 3-4 hours. Open can at both ends and push the thick caramel out. It should be cylindrical and a golden colour. Spoon it onto your plate or cut into slices to serve. Or serve it over ice cream! BANANA FRITA COM CANELA E A ÇÚCAR ("FRIED BANANAS WITH CINNAMON SUGAR") In Brazil, you can have fried bananas with your food or as a dessert! Peel bananas and cut them
in half lengthwise. Fry them in one tablespoon of butter, first
on one side, then the other, until they're beautifully golden brown. Sprinkle
with cinnamon sugar and serve hot.
DID YOU NOTICE????
Many Brazilian recipes are made with condensed milk? It came to Brazil from Switzerland over a hundred years ago. It's made by Nestle and because the label featured the picture of a milkmaid, the cans became known as the "maid milk" and that's what condensed milk is called to this day! |
