Magickal Names
Many pagans and wiccans choose magickal names for themselves when they decide they want to seriously follow the path. Many will choose to keep their chosen name secret, and share it only with the god and goddess. Others will choose two seperate names, one which they use with fellow pagans, and one to share with the god and goddess. Some people decide to tell the god and goddess that they have their new name in their dedication ritual, if they choose to have one. Others will have a special naming celebration which they invite all their family and friends to. Others will simply light a candle and say a prayer to the goddess and god and tell Them their name. And others will just look in the mirror and say their name out loud. It really doesn't matter, it is a personal choice and as long as you are comfortable with what you are doing, it is fine.

There are many different ways of choosing a magickal name. The easiest method I know of and the one I used to find my names is to simply research different names of plants, planets, elements, animals, deities, gemstones and the like and choose something that seems to fit just right. There will be a name which instantly jumps out at you. I have two Magick names and the one which only the goddess and god know was found by looking through a list of different names on a website. It is made up of three different things - a plant considered very powerful and magickal, a name which is derived from my element, and the surname of a witch who was burned during the Burning Times. The three names just seemed so right. My public pagan name, Silver Willow just came to me. I have always loved the name Silver and always intended using it rather than my real name Sarah when I go to uni, and Willow, well, it just seemed right. It sounds so right to me and just feels perfect. When deciding on your name, you could just have one part to your name, or you could fit different names together. And also as you continue along the path you will most likely change and feel you want to change your name - that is perfectly alright. Or you may feel you don't even want a Magickal name and this of course is perfectly alright as well. Here are some different ideas for names.

Traditional Scottish/Gaelic/Celtic Names
Druidic Names
Everyday Gaelic Names

These are only a few examples. There are many, many more to choose from, try looking up correspondence tables etc on web sites and in books and research a culture (e.g. Ancient Greece, Egypt, Scotland, Ireland, Native America, Inca etc) that you are interested in or feel a strong link with. You can also meditate on this idea or scry to try and find your name. Another method is to take a list of names on a piece of paper and move a pendulum over the page/s until it indicates a specific name. Have fun!
