Before I begin I just want you to know that these are only my personal beliefs and feelings about the God and Goddess. You should make up your own mind about Them.
I believe that the God and Goddess are a dual force which together form Spirit. Spirit is in everything, every stone, tree, plant, person and animal. Therefore, if we respect Them, then we must respect everything on this planet as it contains a bit of the God and Goddess. I think of Spirit as being an energy force rather than a person or people, the way many Christians see their God. This energy can be used in many ways and can make things happen. By casting a spell we are encouraging this energy to do certain things. But spells will not work without there being a firm belief in Spirit. When we cast a spell we are working up an energy of our own which is contained inside the Circle. The energy is released from the Circle when we are ready. Without a belief in Spirit, releasing this energy from the Circle is like throwing leaves into a wind. It is a waste of energy. Through ritual we strengthen and improve our relationship with Spirit which is why you are very often encouraged to learn ritual before magick as the magick is useless with out Spirit.
Many people who have turned to Wicca after having believed in a completely different belief system i.e. Christianity, have problems accepting the God. They have previously believed that they should 'fear' their God and that they are at His mercy. Wicca appeals to them because of the Goddess and the more female centered beliefs. Very often they reject the God and concentrate on the Goddess. This is not wrong, it is perfectly acceptable. You are entitled to your own beliefs and if you feel that you only believe in a Goddess, thats fine. And of course, it works the other way around. If you feel you only believe in the God, thats fine as well.
