MADAME SHERRI'S
Back to Index
My boyfriend and i went to Madame Sherri's "Castle"
It's supposed to be a haunted site, but as of today i haven't seen or heard anything to suggest it is.
Here is the story behind the castle and the Pictures we've taken.
Madame Sherri was born in 1878 assumedly in Paris as Antoinette Berandi and was trained as a seamstress in her youth. She then married Andre Maculuso in 1910 and a year later moved to America, which then caught the attention of the New York Times.

She worked as a costume designer for the Ziegfield Follies, and took on the title "Madame Sherri" after the title of Otto Auerbach's play "Madame Sherry" which was popular in Europe in 1910. She chose the name because of it's theatrical appeal, although it was rumored she was a Madame in more than just that sense.

Since Madame Sherri had no money invested in the stock market, she was not affected by it much when it crashed in the 1930's. It was then that the rumor started that she was bringing in money "Illegally" due to illicit means such as running a brothel out of her home. Another rumor started that she was involved in bootlegging but that could not be proven. She was associated with a wellknown bootlegger which is where it may have originated. Her wild parties didn't help her reputation very much, and also the fact that she lived up on a dirt road on Wantastiquet Mountian in the woods. It was rumored that she would go into Brattleboro wearing nothing but a fur-coat.

The house was built in the 1920's after Andre died in Manhattan of syphillis. She summered in Chesterfield, where the ruins of her home stills stand.

Her professional carreer ended in the 1950's when her employer Charles Lamaire left for Hollywood. It was believed that he still sent her checks so she should keep up her home, but it was thought that the money didn't all reach her. Some thought the checks were being intercepted and cashed with a forged signature.

On October 18, 1962 her beloved "Castle" burned to the ground after being left unrepaired and unoccupied for many years. She died 3 years later to the month.
