Case #4: The Chaotix Get an Upgrade
Question: What changed when some of the Chaotix appeared in Sonic
Heroes?
Sonic Heroes was released on GameCube, Xbox, and Playstation 2 in January
2004. Three characters return from Knuckles’ Chaotix: Vector,
Espio, and Charmy. The most obvious changes are in appearance.
Just as Sonic got an appearance upgrade for Sonic Adventure, so do the Chaotix
for Sonic Heroes.
Here are the new and old versions of the Chaotix:

It’s easy to tell that the Chaotix changed for Sonic Heroes, but were there
any other changes? How about age? In Knuckles’ Chaotix, Charmy
was reported as being 16. However, for Sonic Heroes, he’s 6.
(Vector and Espio weren’t given ages for Knuckles’ Chaotix, so Sonic Heroes
finally gives them an age.)
Now let’s consider personality. Since Charmy’s age dropped from 16
to 6, his personality had to change. In Knuckles’ Chaotix, Charmy
was described as being extremely polite, refined, and charming. Now
Charmy is a kid who tends to be scatterbrained—and yet makes the Chaotix
appear professional. As for Espio, his personality remains close to
what was described in Knuckles’ Chaotix. The only difference is that
Espio has had some ninja training. Vector’s personality wasn’t clearly
defined in Knuckles’ Chaotix, except for the fact that he always listens
to music. Now it seems that Vector does more than just listen to music.
So the Chaotix have changed not only in appearance, but also in age and
personality. Now they all work together at the Chaotix Detective Agency.
However, one has to wonder what Mighty the Armadillo would have looked like
if he had been included. . . .
