Sonic Investigation
Case #3: The Case of the Disappearing Emeralds
Question: What are the colors of the seven Chaos Emeralds?
Note: This Investigation deals with only the Genesis games.
The investigation comes from a comment that KnuxFan02 said to Silver Starr.
When Sonic the Hedgehog came out on the Genesis, there were only six Chaos
Emeralds. First we must look at the colors of the emeralds from this
game:
To be simple, let’s give now each emerald a basic color name. (1)
Red, (2) Red-violet, (3) Blue, (4) Yellow, (5) Green, and (6) Grey.
Keep these colors in mind as we study the next game.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the next game to come to the Genesis. This
time there was a seventh emerald added, which gives Sonic the power to change
into Super Sonic. So there should be a new color introduced:
Now let’s name the colors: (1) Light Blue, (2) Violet, (3) Red, (4)
Red-violet, (5) Yellow, (6) Green, and (7) Grey. Notice that the shade
of blue changes to a lighter color and that a violet emerald has been added.
Therefore, it seems that the violet emerald is new to the game. As
a side note, the shape of the emerald changed from an octagon (eight sides)
to a hexagon (six sides).
The next game to study is Sonic the Hedgehog 3:
Again, let’s name the colors: (1) Blue, (2) Green, (3) Grey, (4)
Orange, (5) Yellow, (6) Red-violet, and (7) Light Blue. There are quite
a few changes this time. Blue has been added, which wasn’t in the second
game. And, for the first time, the orange emerald appears. Note
that the emeralds have changed back to their original shape.
Finally, there is the game Sonic 3D Blast:
You know the drill: (1) Gold, (2) Green, (3) Red, (4) Blue, (5) Violet,
(6) Grey, and (7) Blue-green. While the majority of the emeralds remain
the same color, we see two new colors: gold and blue-green.
Most likely gold is a combination of the colors yellow and orange seen in
previous games. The blue-green color is a different shade of the light
blue color seen in previous games. The emeralds also have their original
octagon shape like the first Sonic game.
So, what are the colors of the Chaos Emeralds? There are three colors
that are consistent throughout the game: Grey, Red, and Green.
Red-violet is also a color since it was introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog
and is seen in Sonic the Hedgehogs 2 and 3. Blue is most likely a color
since it was missing only in the second game. That means two other colors
should be present. Probably these two other colors are Yellow and Light
Blue since they exist in all of the games, although they are seen in different
shades.
