Information
Background: Simply put, this is the first Sonic the Hedgehog game
for Game Gear. Because it is the first game, this Sonic game sets the pace
for future Sonic the Hedgehog games on Game Gear.
Story: The mad scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik has captured animals and
turned them into robots to do his evil bidding. The only one who can stop
Robotnik is Sonic, a blue hedgehog with super speed.
Levels: There are six levels in the game:
Green Hill Zone
Bridge Zone
Jungle Zone
Labyrinth Zone
Scrap Brain Zone
Sky Base Zone
Labyrinth Zone and Scrap Brain Zone resemble the respective zones on Sonic
the Hedgehog for Genesis. If you’ve played the Genesis version of Scrap
Brain Zone, you’ll appreciate the simplicity of Act 1 for the Game Gear.
It’s easy to get through the stage and you’re finished before you
know it.
Chaos Emeralds: Hidden throughout each level are the chaos emeralds.
There is one per act, and usually they’re found in the second act of each
stage. In order to avoid getting a “try again” message when you beat the
game, you need to collect all six emeralds. You’ll also get a nice ending.
Miscellaneous: In addition to the six levels, there are also special
stages. Special stages are important because you can collect extra lives
(by either breaking a monitor or collecting 100 rings) and continues. You
first enter a stage by collecting at least 50 rings when you finish the stage.
The first time you go through a stage you have plenty of time to complete
the stage. If you make it into the special stage again (there are four stages),
you have less time to finish the stage.
