Sonic Labyrinth
Information

Background:  Sonic Labyrinth is not your ordinary Sonic the Hedgehog game.  Unlike other Sonic games, Sonic can only perform his Spin Dash and brake (i.e. stop).  Put this fact with the title and you understand the game:  Sonic goes through mazes by using his Spin Dash.  Note also that Sonic is the only playable character, and the only other familiar face you will see is Dr. Robotnik.

Story:  As Dr. Robotnik reflects on his past encounters with Sonic, he finally realizes that Sonic’s speed is responsible for ruining his plans.  Robotnik creates a new pair of shoes that will slow any creature down and has a robot go into Sonic’s home to swap the shoes.  When Sonic puts his shoes on the next day, he realizes that he cannot run!  Sonic then hears Robotnik’s voice.  Robotnik explains that the Chaos Emeralds will deactivate the shoes, but they are deep within his Super Labyrinth.  Sonic realizes that he can still perform his Super Spin Dash and swears to go after Robotnik.

Levels:  There are four levels:

Zone 1:  Labyrinth of the Sky
Zone 2:  Labyrinth of the Sea
Zone 3:  Labyrinth of the Factory
Zone 4:  Labyrinth of the Castle

Each Zone is divided into four parts, i.e. Zone 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, etc.

Chaos Emeralds:  Chaos Emeralds are collected by beating the boss at the end of each Zone.  There are four stages and Robotnik will drop one as he runs away at the end, making a total of five Chaos Emeralds.

Miscellaneous:  The objective of each stage is to navigate through the maze collecting Keys.  Sonic must find all three Keys and make it to the Goal in order to finish the stage.  There are no rings (except for boss battles), so if Sonic is hurt, he will lose all of his keys.  As long as Sonic picks up the keys, he does not have to find them again.  However, if Sonic is too slow, he must return to the original location of the key to collect it again.

Each stage (except for the boss battles) has a time limit.  When Sonic is hurt by an enemy, he will lose a little bit of time.  However, there are items that can help Sonic regain his time, or even increase his speed.  (These “items” are found by touching triangles scattered throughout each zone.)  Sonic can also gain time by destroying robots.

There are two endings to Sonic Labyrinth, although the only difference between the two is the message displayed.  This relates to the fact that there is only one bonus stage—the instruction booklet says there are two—in the game.  If Sonic does not find the bonus stage, a hint will be displayed at the end.  Otherwise a message says that the game has been completed perfectly.
