Sonic
Drift
Information
Background: Sonic Drift is the first Sonic racing game for the Game
Gear, but it was only released in Japan. Games like Sonic
Adventure DX allow you to unlock and play this rare Game Gear game.
Story: Welcome to the Chaos Grand Prix! Sonic, Tails,
and Amy can each race for glory in three different circuits. But watch
out—Dr. Eggman can race, too!
Levels: There are three different circuits which have different
difficulties. The Green GP is the easiest, Yellow GP has medium difficulty,
and Red GP is the hardest. Although the course layout will change,
each GP has the same number (and order) of levels:
Round 1 – Green Hill
Round 2 – Marble
Round 3 – Spring Yard
Round 4 – Labyrinth
Round 5 – Star Light
Round 6 – Scrap Brain
Do the names of the rounds sound familiar? They’re the names of the
levels in Sonic the Hedgehog for Genesis.
Chaos Emeralds: Chaos Emeralds do not really appear in the game.
They are used to identify the different GP races.
Miscellaneous: Each character has their personal strengths,
weaknesses, and special abilities. Sonic has a fast car and can increase
his speed. Tails’ car is average, but he can jump over other cars.
Amy can accelerate quickly and can throw pink hearts to distract her opponents.
Finally, Eggman is slow to accelerate, but he moves quickly once he has enough
speed and he can place bombs on the track.
Scattered throughout the courses are power-ups that can help you. Blue
power-ups give you invincibility, red power-ups give you a burst of speed,
and driving over a spring will make you jump. Rings can also be collected
and serve two purposes: they keep the character from spinning out when
hit by someone or running into something and, by pressing up, the character’s
special ability will be activated.
At the end of the Green and Yellow GPs (and if you do not place first in
the Red GP), a series of flags are raised to honor the winners. If
you do not come in first, a message saying “try again” will appear.
However, if you win, a message will be displayed saying “see you in next
GP.” If you win the Red GP, you will see screenshots of the winner
and see how they celebrate their victory.
