Concept
Kalas is a young rebel who gets caught up in an adventure to save the world from an evil empire.  Sound like every other RPG storyline?  Though the story isn't the most original, Baten Kaitos brings a lot of new concepts to the genre, such as the Magnus card system and the unique battle mode. Score:
4/5
Graphics
One of the most beautiful GCN games out there.  There are a wide variety of areas, and the intro movie is absolutely breath-taking. Score:
5/5
Sound
The background music is really nice.  The voice recording, however, is terrible.  It sounds like all the characters are talking into a paper towel tube.  The battle voice clips also get really annoying, especially Xelha "Aqua BURST!  Light FLARE!" Score:
4/5
Playability
Simple enough.  The movement is really sensitive to the control stick.  Apparently my analog stick is slightly lopsided to the right, though none of my other games respond to it.  I'll find Kalas moving right very slowly.  Anyway, the battle system can be pretty intense, as you Class Up, you have a time limit to you use your first card.  The battles can also get very difficult and some design choices were not very well made. Score:
4/5
Entertainment
It's a fun game, you do want to keep pressing forward to find out what happens next.  There are some very interesting character (my favorite is the Great Mizuti). Score:
5/5
Replay Value
Moderate.  Most RPGs aren't nearly as much fun to play through a second time, just because any major storyline surprises are already known.  I would consider playing through another time though.  Score:
3/5
OVERALL: 8.3/10
