Valentine's Day is February 14th!
Every February 14th, we give cards and gifts to people we love in honor of Saint Valentine. Who was St. Valentine? There are several legends about him.
One legend is that Valentine was a Roman priest in the third century. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men were better soldiers than married men. He outlawed marriage for all young men. Valentine thought that this was unfair. He continued to marry young couples secretly. When the emperor found out about the priest's actions, he had him killed.
Another legend is that Valentine was a Christian doctor who was treating the jailer's blind daughter. It was against the law to be a Christian, so Valentine was put into prison. He wrote a secret letter to the little blind girl and signed it, "Your Valentine." When she opened his message, she suddenly could see again! Valentine was executed on February 14, 270 A.D.
February has been the month to celebrate love since the Middle Ages. The Roman feast of Lupercalia took place on February 15. Each single young woman would write a love message on that day. All the messages were placed into an urn, and each single young  man chose a message from the urn. He wore the girl's name on his sleeve for a week.
Another important character on Valentine's Day is Cupid. In Roman mythology, Cupid was the son of Venus, the goddess of love. The Greeks called him "Eros." They believed that Cupid was a mischievous baby angel who flew through the sky and shot his "love arrows" into their hearts. This made them fall in love.
