| My Neighbor Told Me That He Sold His Car |
|||||||||||
| My neighbor, Mr. Perez, began to have money problems, and he felt worried all the time. He thought about his problems so much that he had nightmares and couldn't sleep well at night. A major problem for Mr. Perez was the big payment for his expensive SUV. He bought it new this winter so he could drive in the snow. He paid $40,000 for that car---too much! One night Mr. Perez read in the classified ads about a used car for only $6,000. Here's the ad from the newspaper: HONDA '00 CIVIC DX---2DR, auto, am/fm radio, only 20K, gar kept, $6,000, cashier chk. 703-123-4567. My neighbor thought, "Maybe I could sell my SUV and buy a cheaper car, and my payments would be lower. I don't really need such a big car, just for myself. It snows only a couple of times a year, anyway. I made a big mistake buying that SUV. Also, it cost much more because it was new. I should have bought a smaller, used car." Mr. Perez put his own ad in the paper and sold his SUV. Soon he heard from a friend about an honest used car dealer near his home. He went to the used car lot and found a nice 1998 Honda that cost $7,900. When he saw it, he fell in love with it. It was clean and had only 41,000 miles on it. He sat down with the salesperson and applied for a loan. He used his equity in the SUV for a down payment. He got a 6-month warranty. My neighbor spoke well of the dealer and gave me the salesperson's business card. |

| He said that he felt much better. His monthly payments are lower. Also, the SUV was a "gas-guzzler"---it "drank" a lot of gas, and got poor gas mileage, and the Honda is much cheaper to run. The SUV also took up a lot of space, which made it hard to find parking. The Honda is smaller and easier to park. Yesterday my neighbor wrote his family that his finances are much better, and he sent home extra money. Last night, he slept like a baby! |
