AUTHOR’S NOTE: Hey all! This is my new fic Enigmatic Ordinance...this little plot bunny has been hopping around in my head for months...I had to write it. This is the first chapter in the first of three other stories that follow everyone from fifth year all the way to seventh year...I dunno how long these stories are going to take me, but for the most part, this one’s all planned out. I just need to write the actual chapters. One more thing, please keep in mind while you read this that this is my first attempt at writing a Harry Potter fic...so please be light on flames!

Chapter 1: Recurring Dreams and Odd Feelings

Harry awoke with a start and clutched his forehead. He’d been having that dream again.

*This is ridiculous* he thought sternly. *Why can’t I stop dreaming about this?*

Well, truth be told, Harry didn’t know how to stop the dreams, or what they even signified in the first place.

This dream consisted of a girl; a young girl, perhaps his age or maybe a year older. In his dream, he never sees her face, nor hears her voice. He only sees a dark figure before her, pointing a wand. He always wakes up right when some sort of spell is being cast, so he never really sees what happens to her.

The funny this was, whenever he dreamed this dream, his scar would burn, which is probably the reason he never got to see what happened.

*Maybe that dark figure is Voldemort* he thought fearfully. *I mean, he does have Wormtail back, I know that for sure. But what’s the girl got to do with it all?*

Harry pondered this for a few minutes, but became slowly overcome with weariness as the pain in his forehead ceased.

“I’ll think about this tomorrow.” he said aloud to himself.

He then closed his eyes again and fell soundly onto his pillow. Tomorrow would be his 15th birthday.

*~*~*

Harry awoke in the morning sweaty, his baggy clothes and messy hair sticking to him. He sighed and looked over at Hedwig’s cage: she wasn’t back yet, be he knew she would be eventually.

He dressed quickly in his jeans and a flannel shirt and ran downstairs in his socks looking for his missing shoes.

“What are you looking for, boy?” Uncle Vernon spat angrily, watching Harry scramble all over the room from over his newspaper.

Harry ignored him and threw himself on the floor to look beneath the couch. He smiled triumphantly at what he saw and pulled his left show from under it.

He searched around a little longer and found the other shoe at the foot of the stairs. He quickly slipped on his shoes and hurried into the kitchen, where Dudley sat eating his enormous breakfast of eggs, bacon, cereal, ham and countless other things. Harry scrunched his nose distastefully at the site of his over grown cousin and shook his head subtly as he walked over to the frying pan to retrieve a few pieces of the bacon left from Dudley. He stuck one into his mouth and chewed heartily for a moment, before leaving the room holding his remaining bacon pieces. He quickly jumped up the stairs and bounded into his room.

For some reason, the Dursleys weren’t bothering him today. Uncle Vernon had mumbled something at him, yes, but he usually ignored these statements; Uncle Vernon usually insulted Harry anyway, he was beyond accustomed to it. But Dudley hadn’t be the usual nuisance and Aunt Petunia hadn’t made him make breakfast this morning.

*What’s going on?* Harry thought *is it possible that they're trying to be nice to me because it’s my birthday?*

He shook his head doubtfully and sat on his bed to ponder the matter further, when a tawny owl flew into his room and landed on the back of his desk chair.

Harry smiled, all thoughts of the Dursleys driven from his mind, and ran over to the owl to see what is had brought. He discovered that it was a letter from Hogwarts; just his book list and a list of other items he’d need for school.

Harry sighed happily and looked at the calendar on his wall counting down the days to September 1st.

*Just one more month.* he thought.

Just at that moment, another owl glided into the room, this one, however, being extremely smaller.

Harry smiled wider and went over to Ron’s owl, Pigwidgen, and happily untied the letter he was carrying. Before Harry could open the letter, however, another owl flew, or rather fell, into the room; it was Errol, the Weasley’s family owl. This time, Harry received a large parcel instead of a letter.

Harry’s smile broadened as he walked over to Errol, who was now on Harry’s bed, and removed the heavy burden from him.

“Thanks, Errol.” he said “Tell Ron I said Hello.”

Harry decided he’d help Errol to the window, at least, just in case he decided to slam into it.

Harry watched as the old owl flew away and ran back to his bed for Ron’s present and letter. (Pigwidgen was still zooming around the room happily.)

He decided to read the letter first:

Dear Harry,

Happy Birthday! I can’t believe you’re fifteen all ready...can’t believe I am either! So, how’s summer with the Muggles been going? Not treating you too bad, are they?

I’ve gotten a letter from Hermione and she says she’ll be going to Diagon Alley next week to get all of our new books. Mum’s decided we’ll go then, too. Can we see you there, Harry? If the Muggles’ll just drop you off at the Leaky Cauldron with your Hogwarts stuff, you could come home with us for the remaining weeks of summer. I’m still trying to get Hermione to stay, too, but for some reason, she won’t...man girls are weird.

Well, gotta run, Harry. Hope to see you next week, Send me an answer with Hedwig, Pig’s too hyper.

Ron

Harry smiled. His friends were great. They always knew how to cheer him up and make him feel wanted.

Harry then remembered the parcel, and turned around on his bed to get it. He picked it up and stared at it for a moment, then he tore through the paper like there was no tomorrow.

When he got the paper off, he opened the medium-sized box and looked inside.

Harry smiled again and laughed. Ron had given him his mini-Krum figure from the Quidditch World Cup last year. He picked it up and held it in his palm, allowing mini-Krum to walk (or rather limp) around. Harry looked back down in the box and saw a folded piece of paper. He picked it up and read:

Hi ya, Harry.

This is sorta an I.O.U....I couldn’t think of anything to get you, so you can just have my mini-Krum until I find something. I promise I’ll find you something great, Harry!

Happy Birthday, anyway!

Ron

Harry laughed once more and placed Ron’s note and mini-Krum back in the box.

Just then, Hedwig soared into Harry room and landed on her perch.

“Hullo, Hedwig. Where on earth have you been?” he greeted in a playful tone.

Hedwig cooed and dropped a parcel with a letter attached into Harry’s hands.

If it were possible, Harry’s smile broadened even more when he saw that this particular package was from Hermione.

He patted Hedwig on the head and turned to sit on his bed, parcel still in hand. He tore the letter off first and placed the box beside him.

Hello Harry!

Greetings from America! I’m so glad Hedwig found me! Otherwise, you’d have no present and I could never let that happen!

I do hope your birthday is great, Harry, don’t let the Dursleys get you down. We’ll go back to school soon enough.

Speaking of school, have you started your summer work yet? I do know what a procrastinator you are, Harry! (*You can only imagine.* Harry thought rather bitterly, thinking of his greasy Potions Master.)

I, of course, finished it a month ago. Do get started on yours as well, Harry. You wouldn’t want Snape ruining the beginning of fifth year.

Well, anyway, I suppose Ron's informed you about Diagon Alley, so I won’t repeat him. Hope to see you there!

Happy 15th birthday, Harry!

Love from,

Hermione

Harry chuckled a little to himself before folding up the letter and sitting it beside him.

*Hermione’s in America? Wonder who she’s visiting there...*

Shaking his head slightly he reached next for Hermione’s gift.

He tore the plain, brown paper away and opened the little white box contained within it.

He found a small note at the very top and proceeded to read it.

Hello again, Harry!

Thought you might get a laugh or two out of this. Show it to Ron, as well, He should also find it rather funny!

Love from,

Hermione

Harry furrowed his brow with curiosity and looked inside the box; he immediately started cracking up. Inside was a picture of Draco Malfoy: water skiing! Well, attempting to water ski, anyway. Since the picture was a wizard photo, it kept showing Malfoy falling off of his skis and looking rather peeved.
Harry was about to close the box when he saw something else at the bottom.

He pulled it out; a box of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans and a stack of Chocolate Frogs.

Harry smiled to himself and placed the candy back into the box.

He stood, walked to his desk and placed the box on it.

Then, still holding his wizard photo, he walked to his calendar and pinned it up beside it just in case he ever needed a laugh.

Harry sighed with happiness and turned to sit once more on his bed.

*Maybe I should start my summer work like Hermione said...* he thought.

However, this thought was short lived.

“Harry Potter!” called a stern and annoyed voice from downstairs.

Harry rolled his eyes and slid off of his bed.

*What do they want now?* he thought irritably, opening the door and sluggishly descending the stairs.

“Yes, Uncle Vernon?” he asked monotonously, noticing he was in a nice business suit. (He found this odd because it was a Saturday.)

When Uncle Vernon saw him, he narrowed his beady little eyes, rose up from his chair and walked over to Harry.

“Now you listen here, boy. We’re going out to a business lunch. We obviously can’t bring you, so, under much debating, you’re...staying here alone.” he forced out reluctantly.

Harry’s eyes widened in surprise and happiness; who could ask for a better birthday present?

“Now you just wait, don’t go getting all too jumpy, now. I don't want any funny business...you got that? None of that in my house!”

Harry contained his ultimate joy and nodded his head enthusiastically.

Uncle Vernon narrowed his eyes once more.

“Good.” he said simply, walking into the kitchen.

Harry then let loose the smile he’d been containing and jumped high into the air for joy.

*This is going to be a better day then I thought...*

*~*~*

It turned out that the Dursleys had decided to spend most of the day with this business client of theirs because even after four o’clock they weren’t home. But Harry was perfectly alright with this. He’d spent the day downstairs for probably the first time in his entire life, and watched the television. He’d also gotten his Firebolt and zoomed around the house a few times; then he flew outside. All-in-all, it was probably the best birthday Harry had ever had.

At about a quarter past six, the Dursleys arrived back to find that their beloved home was still intact. Harry had heard them coming and, having cleaned his messes as he went, hopped onto his Firebolt and zoomed up to his room; The Dursleys were never the wiser.

After Harry had reached his room and shut the door, he’d jumped off his broomstick and stuck it in his trunk. He then heard the front door close and jumped onto his bed with one of the books Dudley never bothered reading (just as a cover) and opened it to make it seem like he’d been in there all night.

A few moments after the door closed, Harry heard heavy footsteps climbing the stairs and walking down the hall; he turned his eyes to his books just as his door opened and Uncle Vernon stepped in.

“What are you doing in here, boy?” an irritated Uncle Vernon spat.

Harry looked over the top of the book at his uncle, then back down at the book’s words.

“Reading, Uncle Vernon.” he said nonchalantly.

Uncle Vernon’s beady little eyes flicked around Harry’s room quickly then landed back on Harry.

He narrowed his eyes at the little pain in the neck, turned and left the room.

Once Harry was sure Uncle Vernon was gone, he let out a small laugh and shook his head. Then he closed the book and walked over to his trunk to get started on his Hogwarts homework. After all, he only had one month left.

*~*~*

That one month left of summer passed so quickly Harry didn't even remember half of what he did. It seemed like only yesterday when Ron had asked to meet him at Diagon Alley, when in reality it had been at least two or three weeks. Harry had spent the remainder of the summer at The Burrow; he learned more and more about the Weasleys every time he visited.

Now it was September the first and the Weasleys, along with Harry, were walking swiftly through King’s Cross Station.

“C’mon, kids, don’t want to miss the train.” said Mr. Weasley, who was carrying one of Ginny’s extra bags.

No sooner had this been said that they reached the barrier between platforms nine and ten and were through it before any Muggles could notice. Once onto Platform 9 ¾, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley rested a little, giving each of their kids a good-bye hug and kiss; Harry received a hug from Mrs. Weasley and a handshake from Mr. Weasley.

The redheaded parents smiled at the group of five and left through the barrier.

Fred and George were already on the train by this time and Ginny had run off somewhere looking for her best friend.

Harry and Ron had turned to one another and, while waiting for Hermione, had initiated a thorough conversation about Quidditch.

Ron started talking about some of the greatest Keepers ever when something behind him caught Harry’s eye: a girl. He’d never seen her before in his life...but he was positive she wasn’t a first year, she looked to be about his age. She was of medium height and build with long, raven-colored hair and mysterious green eyes. She was wearing Muggle clothes, so he couldn’t tell if she was just dropping someone off or if she really was a student.

*She is standing in front of a trolley, though.* Harry thought. *Wow, she’s really -- *

“Harry!” cried the exasperated voice of Ron Weasley. “Hello...Earth to Harry...Come back to us...Hello...”

Harry shook his head and looked at Ron; Hermione was beside him now and both looked rather hurt that he’d been ignoring them. Ron was the first to speak.

“Are you okay, Harry? You looked as if you were in a sort of...daze or something.”

Harry looked quickly from Ron to the spot where the mysterious girl had been...but she was gone. Harry furrowed his brow and looked back at Ron and Hermione.

“Yeah, Ron. I’m fine. Just thinking about some homework I haven’t finished yet.” he covered quickly.

This comment, however, did not make Hermione too happy.

“Harry, I told you that you should’ve started at the beginning of summer! Now you’re going back with half of your homework! You are going to get detention!”

Harry shrugged.

“It’s only one assignment, Hermione...C’mon, guys, let’s go find a compartment.” said Harry, quickly changing the subject.

His two friends nodded and all three started in the direction of The Hogwarts Express, pushing their trolleys in front of them. Once they managed to get onto the train, they realized that there were tons of new first years; the train’s aisle way was packed.

Hermione decided to take the initiative and rammed into the first person she saw blocking her.

“Watch where you’re going, please. It’s not a good idea to bump into a Prefect...Even if we are only on the train.”

The first year she’d bumped into nodded quickly before muttering an apology and moving out of Hermione’s way.

Harry and Ron silently exchanged looks, then looked back at Hermione; having a friend in high places was turning out to be a good thing.

Hermione continued this little act down half of the aisle where she ran into a fellow Prefect.

“Jade!” she exclaimed, hugging the girl tightly, “How was your summer?”

The Prefect Hermione referred to as “Jade” smiled.

“It was fine, Hermione, but this may not be the best place to have a long discussion.” she said, pointing behind Hermione at the held up crowd.

Hermione looked behind herself at the crowd and, in doing so, noticed Harry and Ron were still with her.

“Oh!” she cried, “Jade, these are my friends, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Guys, this is the Ravenclaw Prefect Jade Hemingway.”

Harry took a look at Jade; she was about Hermione’s height, had dazzling blue eyes and curly blonde hair that reached her shoulders.

“Hello, Harry, Ron.” she said, nodding at both of them and smiling.

Harry returned her smile.

“Hello, Jade. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Well you two,” Hermione began, “we should stop holding everyone up and find a compartment. I’ll see you later at the Prefect meeting, Jade, okay?”

Jade looked at Hermione and smiled.

Harry noticed her raise her eyebrow a little as she looked behind Hermione at...Draco Malfoy?

In return, Harry’s own eyebrows raised...Why was this girl looking at Malfoy with such interest? He turned to his right to ask Ron if he’d noticed, but was met with an odd sight: Ron was standing there in practically a daze. He was just staring ahead at, and drooling slightly over, the Ravenclaw Prefect herself, who was now talking to another Ravenclaw that had emerged from the compartment beside them.

“C’mon Harry! Ron! We’ve got to find a compartment before the train leaves!” called Hermione a few feet ahead of them.

Harry nodded, looked over at Ron and slapped him lightly on the cheek to bring him back to reality.

“Huh?” he asked, looking in all directions.

Harry shook his head.

“C’mon, Ron, Hermione’s calling us. Let’s go.” Harry said, pushing through the group of second years in front of them.

Ron nodded and followed Harry.

“Finally! What were you two doing back there?” asked an annoyed Hermione.

Ron spoke up first. (as usual)

“Hermione, when did you meet Jade?”

Hermione blinked at him and rolled her eyes.

“Oh yes, Ron, because that has everything to do with what I just asked you.” She sighed, “C’mon.”

After five minutes of checking for empty compartments, they were down at the very end of the train.

“I hope there’s a compartment down here, otherwise, we’ll have to split up.” said Harry, looking in the cubicle beside him.

They all checked and eventually there was only one left to look in. All three walked over to it and opened it’s door; there was no one in this cubicle...except for the girl Harry had seen earlier.

When the door had opened, she’d turned to look at them, her eyes falling on Harry. She smiled.

Harry’s heart jumped into his throat; he was officially enamored with this girl.
