Comments: Flair remembered during his induction speech for Piper at WrestleMania 21:
"So they (Victor Jovica and Carlos Colon) call me, they made me a deal. This is one of those times that makes me 17-time world champion, by the way. Just so you know.

I said, "I'll only come back if I can bring Piper.' 'Oh, you really want to bring Roddy?' 'Yeah.' 'Okay, okay that's great. Bring Roddy.'

So I call Roddy. 'You wanna go to Santo Domingo and do a little tour in San Juan and do the Santo Domingo thing? 'Yeah, yeah I'm all about it.'

So we get there and Roddy hurts his back the night before. He's walking around and we're the only two white guys who speak English in the whol island that I know of. Roddy's back is hurting and he's trying to tell the guy. In comes the doctor, he doesn't speak a word of English, he's got a needle this big. Roddy says, 'I don't care, give it to me.' And I said, 'Roddy think about it. You don't know what the guy's got.' 'I don't care.' Poof (pantomimes inserting a needle).

Then they come in and they want Roddy to carry the American flag out in Santo Domingo. Out comes their guy carrying their flag. They play the national anthem. Out comes our guy, they play the anthem.

They say, 'Just don't get too involved.' Well Roddy, of course, no such thing. I say, 'Roddy this is a rough crowd. Do not do this. It's already sold out. I don't care. We're not coming back here.'

Out comes the anthem, out comes Roddy carrying the flag. Slaps a couple of guys on the way to the ring (Flair makes a sound to indicate his displeasure).

Needless to say, it was like one of those deals where I had to wrestle a guy and he put a sleeper on me. And without smartening everyone up here, when the bell was going one ... two ... - the referee - the bell rang, my arm went down and I was still the champion technically, but nobody in the building understood that. So somehow Roddy got involved. Another full-scale riot. Militia, guns ...

At five o' clock in the morning all there was on that particular acerage in Santo Domingo was a destroyed building and me and Piper in an ambulance going to the hotel. From there, we got on an airline, a plane, and flew and drank all the way to Miami..."

Editor notes:
Flair is confusing the finishes to the two Veneno matches. A different version is told in Flair's autobiography.

Flair recalls in his autobiography:
"Veneno and I had worked out a finish where I would screw him out of the title. He began crisscrossing the ropes, and when he moved too close to the apron, Piper stuck his hand into the ring and tripped him. There were soldiers all over the building and a good half-dozen of them pick up their rifles and pointed them at Piper's head. This was the spot where I was supposed to cover Veneno and steal the win, but I got so scared that I pulled him on top of me and yelled, "Pin me!"

"Que dice?" Veneno was confused and began pulling away. I tugged him back toward me and held him over my body so he couldn't move. Then I looked at the referee.

"Count!" I screamed.

Taking note of the soldiers at ringside swinging their billy clubs at Piper, the ref got the picture and quickly slapped the mat three times." (102)

Roddy Piper contributes:
"The soldiers started using the sticks with the chains on the closest person to them - which of course was me! Flair was safe in the beginning because he had the high ground in the ring and also because they didn't look at him as the bad guy; the whole place hated me because of what I was doing to their hero. But after a while they turned on ric, too, and we both were in the fight of our lives - for our lives. The entire army and arena were now after us and we had no place to go. I had my back to the ring and I grabbed a chair for protection while my partner-in-crime was still in the ring. We had no idea how the hell we were going to live and tell about this one. Then all of a sudden a Puerto Rican wrestler, the Masked Invader, came running out of the locker room to try to help us get out of the ring unharmed. Somehow or other he managed to create a path down the aisles and go us back to the dressing room, where we thought we would find safety. But when we got there the place was a mess. All of our stuff was either stolen or trashed, including my wedding ring and a special diamond king ring that Johnny Rodz (Java Ruuk) had given me a while back.

But the chaos didn't end there. There were still people who literally wanted to kill us pounding on the door. The nut jobs managed to get the door open and started throwing pieces of concrete at Ric and me. So now with our backs again up against a wall and nowhere to go, Flair asked me as we were ducking out of the way of the stones: "Dom Perignon, Pipes?" He we were with our lives in danger and Flair was still a joker.

This craziness went on until about two o'clock in the morning when finally someone got an ambulance up there, which whisked us away to safety without the huge crowd that had gathered outside knowing. This was one time when I truly thought there was no way out." (118-119)
