Former
Band Director is Orlando Sentinels' Teacher of the week!
- Charles
Watford, former Lake Howell Band Director, currently Winter
Springs Band Director was recognized in the Sunday's Orlando
Sentinel; here is an excerpt of their interview with him:
Greatest
moment as a teacher: When I received Teacher of the Year
in 1999 (at LHHS). It was an honor to be chosen by the
students and faculty. The band that year received
straight "superior" ratings at all events. It
was one of the best years of my life!
Most
embarrassing moment as a teacher: When I also served as
the color guard sponsor, I was helping to remove the vinly
floor at the Tampa Regional competition and became buried
beneath the layers in front of about 2,000 people. They had to
dig me out.
The
person you most admire and why: Dr. Bobby Adams of Stetson
university. Because of his dedication to the field of
music education and his guidance, I am now a teacher who tries
to emulate his passion for music.
Silver
Regiment place GRAND CHAMPIONS at OUTBACK BOWL

- At this years
big trip: The Outback Bowl the Silver Regiment walked away
winners, winning the biggest award there: Grand Champions for
Marching Field Show. With that victory came the honor to
performing in the pre-game show for the outback bowl.
Other awards include 3rd place in class III concert band,
honorable mention in parade, 1st place for marching percussion,
and 1st place in class III marching field show. Congrats
to all the other bands that came from around the nation as well!
And a big thanks to all the band parents and Mr. Leighton (band
director) who helped make this trip possible!
- Chris The Bus
Driver from Bus I during our trip has posted on his website a
collection of footage he video taped during our stay at the

Highlights...
- This
month has been quite insane, it started with the tarpon springs
festival on Oct 14, Seminole County Marching Festival the week
after, BOA this weekend, and FBA the next weekend. So
needless to say Marching Season is well underway, in fact, it's
almost over! =(
- The
Silver Regiment went to the Tarpon Springs Outdoor Music
Festival the 14th of October. Doing quite well the band
placed 3rd in class AAA and scored 4th overall with a rating of
82 (I can't remember the exact score). Congrats to
Seminole in their outstanding performance that earned them 1st
place, and thanks goes out to Tarpon Springs for hosting the
festival!

Band
camp registration
- Today was band
camp registration from 4PM to 8PM for all members of the Silver
Regiment. At this band members and parents filled out
various forms, paid band dues, had the option to purchase band
jackets and shoes, as well as signing up to work at concessions
and other functions. A big thanks goes out to the band
parents who helped out.
- A B.P.A meeting
was held today too in which the new band director Todd Leighton
introduced himself to the members of the board and discusses his
plans for this year.
- There was also
a Student Council meeting in which once again Mr. Leighton
introduced himself to the council.
- Upper-classmen
who wish to be fitted for uniforms before the freshmen may be
fitted during next week. Check with Mrs. Mekker for the
schedule.
- Note: Band camp
week #1 will start tomorrow for all color guard, percussion and
drum majors
Rocketeer
replaced with music from Gerschwin
- Today it was
announced that the Rocketeer music, originally planned as next
years marching show will be replace with music by Gerschwin.
This needed to be done since the Rocketeer Marching arrangement
was not going to be completed by next week which is the start of
band camp. The Gerschwin music however only needed small
arranging, and should be at the printers by the end of the week
in time for band camp.
Todd
Leighton announced as new Band Director!
- Todd Leighton
has just been announced as the new Lake Howell High School Band
Director and AP Music Theory Teacher. He replaces Charles
Watford who left Lake Howell last month for Winter Springs High
School after serving as LHHS band director for the past 6 years.
Mr. Leighton has been with the Lake Howell program for several
years as the percussion instructor and so this news came as a
delight to many students knowing that they will be working with
someone whom they already know.

- Today was
the first band practice for this years new Silver Regiment
Marching Band. The practice, which took place from 6PM to
7:30PM in the Lake Howell Band Room was run by Band Director
Charles Watford during which the band played the marching show,
a new warm up piece, and new stands tunes.
- As
for the progress of next years show music, from what I could see
Ron Ellis has not yet brought Mr. Watford any new music since
his early visit last year. As of now the majority of the
first movement is complete (about 11 bars are still to be added
to the movement). Silver Regiment members can hope to
receive the new movement either at a sectional or during the
next full band rehearsal.
- 1998/1999
Drum Major, Mr. John Dupuis was present at the practice having
composed new stand tune music for the band to play this year.
The music featured various music from popular songs and
soundtracks. It sounded really cool (btw)!!! Thanks John!
- After
the practice the Freshmen had a meeting with the Band Parent
Board and the Silver Regiment officers in which they discussed
what exactly is required by the band parents financially, what
they expect from the students and other things that orientated
the new freshmen.
-
Silver
Regiment Band Director for the past several years Monday
announced that he will no longer be the band director for this
coming year. Evidently he accepted a position as Winter
Springs High School Band Director the previous week in order to
spend more time with his family. Mr. Watford has been
Band Director at Lake Howell for the past 6 years, accomplishing
several award winning Marching Shows, developing the AP Music
Theory Program, Receiving Straight superiors in marching and
concert festival, including 2 times at a state level. 2
years ago he won the teachers of the year award for Lake Howell.
News of his departure came as a shock to many band members, with
them becoming obviously upset and depressed with this news.
A new band
director will be picked within the next week.
We, the
Silver Regiment, are very upset and sadden by loosing such
a great teacher, and man, and wish him the best in the future.
[update:
June 23rd]
Band
Director interviews are underway this week, and will
continue throughout the next few weeks.
